Friday, shortly after noon, the plane was sighted near a northern Saskatchewan and. about an hour later, the survivors were found 25 miles south of their craft. Dakota, a U.S. Navy Canso and a U.S. Coast Guard Canso met them and escorted them in tight formation. There was a tense silence as the big amphibian Canso stopped before about 300 people. The hatch was pushed back, and Capt.

Custer stepped out, followed by Capt. Stirling Hamilton. The crowd cheered. The naval officers waved their hands. "Thanks to God and the Royal Canadian Air Force, men are anve today who wouldn't otherwise be alive," Captain Custer said.
