Born 62969 Bats Throws: Right. School: Co Britsoxwin3-2 on pinch-hit single By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer NEW BRITAIN The New Britain Red Sox got something they don't often see in their 3-2 victory over the Harrisburg Senators Wednesday night before 548 at Beehive Field. A clutch hit. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth with two men on and two outs, pinch hitter Jose Birriel singled to drive in John Roberts with the go-ahead run. "We got a good clutch hit when we needed it," Britsox Manager Dave Holt said.

"Quite often this year, we've been one hit short. We need to win some games like this." Luis Vasquez was the winning pitcher (3-6); the loser, Mike Curtis (3-5). Vasquez scattered seven hits and struck out the final two batters of the game. "I was working my fastball," Vasquez said. "My last few pitches were up about 90 miles an hour." In his last two starts Vasquez pitched well, but lost both times due to the Britsox' inability to score runs.

"Luis lost the last two games 2-1," Holt said. "Luckily we were able to get more than two runs this time. It's a nice win for him." The Britsox are 18-31, and the Senators fall to 30-24. In the top of the fifth inning, catcher Jeff Banister crushed a two-run homer over the left-field fence to give the Senators a 2-0 lead. It was Banister's third home run of the season.

The Britsox scored a run in the bottom half of the inning after Eddie Zambrano doubled off the center-field wall and then came home on a wild pitch by Curtis to make the score 2-1. New Britain tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after Victor Rosario doubled off the left-field wall, moved to second on a Zambrano grounder, and was singled in by Todd Pratt. lumbia St. J.C.
