Viewers will see scientists, divers and guides at work with sharks in the Bahamas, the Sea of Cortez and Australia. The last CPTV nature program, "In the Land of the Polar Bears," (Channel 24 at 10) features a rare look at beautiful, desolate Wrangel Island a haven for polar bears, walruses, Siberian geese, and polar foxes.

On the third-season premiere of "thirtyso-mething" (ABC at 10), Nancy and Elliot's increasingly warm relationship is jeopardized by the arrival of Nancy's disapproving mother (guest Elizabeth Hoffman). Cult choice The rarely seen "Hell's Angels" (AMC at 8:30) was producer-director-millionaire Howard Hughes' most expensive movie ($3.8 million in 1930), and it contains some of the most spectacular aerial footage ever shot. Jean Harlow stars in this World War I tale, some of which is in color. It's a must for VCR-owning film buffs, since it's not available on home video. Series notes Tony finally acknowledges his feelings for Angela on the sixth-season premiere of "Who's the Boss?" (ABC at 8) A man in a speeding car tries to repair an airborne plane's jammed landing gear on "Rescue 911" (CBS at 8) Tony searches for a missing ballerina on "Wolf" (CBS at 9) Jackie decides to become a cop on "Roseanne" (ABC at 9) Brandon Maggart plays Maddie's prejudiced brother on "Chicken Soup" (ABC at 9:30) A cop commits suicide on the air during Killian's broadcast on the season opener of "Midnight Caller" (NBC at 10).

Late night Singer Sammy Davis Jr. and actress Faith Ford are on "The Arsenio Hall Show" (WTIC, Channel 61, at 11); singer Tom Jones and actors Robert Stack and Judith Light visit host Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" (NBC at singer Barbara Mandrell, actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, former baseball player Johnny Bench, actor Christopher Norris and comic Steve Kelley are on "The Pat Sajak Show" (CBS at the new Miss America and actor Charles Grodin are on "Late Night With David Letterman" (NBC at 12:30 a.m.); and actor Danny Aiello is on "Later With Bob Costas" (NBC at 1:30 am). Local channels "The Time of Your Life," starring James Cagney and William Bendix, is based on William Saroyan's play about a San Francisco saloon and the philosophical eccentrics who frequent it (WHCT, Channel 18, at 8). By JON BURLINGAME United Feature Syndicate Two new doctor shows begin "Doogie Howser, M.D." (ABC at 8:30) and "Island Son" (CBS at 10) and they couldn't be more different. "Doogie," which ABC hopes viewers will sample while waiting for "Roseanne," is about a 16-year-old boy genius who is a medical-school graduate and and a resident at a major hospital. It's from producer Steven. Bochco, who has had an occasional flash of TV genius himself Street Blues," "L.A. umiiiwmiiiiii him it's certainly unusual TV tnnirht as if "St.

Elsewhere" wiiigin. had been retooled for the teenage chapter of Mensa. Bochco mixes the usual life-and-death issues of any medical show with the emotional maturation of an adolescent, and actor Neil Patrick Harris (himself a 16-year-old kid) is so credible that the premise works, making "Doogie" both funny and touching. James B. Sikking and Belinda Montgomery play his parents.

"Doogie" moves to Wednesday nights beginning Wednesday (at although its obvious youth appeal would seem to require an earlier time slot than the network has given it. "Island Son," Richard Chamberlain's first weekly series since "Dr. Kildare" was canceled in 1966, once again casts the actor as a physician. This time, he's a veteran doctor at a hospital in Honolulu and not unlike the character of Dr. Gillespie on "Dr.

Kildare" a father figure to some of the young residents. Chamberlain's sincerity and passion, which has brought him acclaim in such miniseries as "The Thorn Birds" and "The Bourne Identity," is this series' sole advantage. The first episode is weighed down by medical-show plot No. 302 (telling the parent of a brain-dead child that her heart is needed for transplantation into a dying little boy) and at least a half-dozen cliched characters. Producers Nigel and Carol McKeand introduce new characters next week, including Brynn Thayer as the hospital head and Carol Huston as a first-year resident.

Other highlights "Matlock" begins its third season with a two-hour kickoff (NBC at 8) filmed in Andy Griffith's hometown of Manteo, N.C. Clarence Gilyard joins the cast as a deputy sheriff in this show about Ben being framed on a phony drug charge. Nature specials abound on PBS tonight. At 8, "Nova Special: Whale Rescue" (CPTV, Channel 24 in the Hartford area) chronicles the struggles of volunteers and professionals to rescue more than 60 whales that were stranded during a blustery winter storm in Cape Cod Bay in December 1986. At 9, the "National Audubon Society Special: Sharks" (CPTV, Channel 24) illustrates what is Serious mood prevalent at Emmys Late-night 'crash TV probably will be a smash, sad to say Continued from Page El And Richard Mulligan, who won for his lead role in "Empty Nest," wasn't in a joking mood either.

"I don't know that I'm a funny person," he said. "Billy Crystal is funny. Robin Williams is funny. I'm just an actor who can get it on." Partial list of winners possessing the locker-room air of professional wrestling: the Rockers, the Violators, Hot Flash, Bad Attitude, the Maniacs and the T-Birds. If this sounds ridiculous, it is, of course, and there is only the skimpiest pretense that those involved think it isn't.

Mock violence and pro-hockey-style brawls are the rule, not the exception. And if this sounds like it'll never work, think again. The program is directed by 10-time Emmy Award-winning ABC Sports producer-director Chet Forte and is produced by David Sams, the marketing mind behind "Wheel of For tune," "Jeopardy!" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Motown Productions, maker of "Lonesome Dove," is also on the "Rollergames" team, and these people sure aren't going broke underestimating American tastes. All of this, however, does prove one thing: America needs to go to bed earlier. "American Gladiators" is broadcast Saturdays from 11:30 p.m.

to 12:30 a.m. on WTNH (Channel 8). "Rollergames" is broadcast Sundays from 12:30 a.m. to 1:30 on WFSB (Channel 3). "Lillian Gish: The Actor's Continued from Page El show.

But there's also the lure of $35,000 in cash and prizes. In any case, from the manic looks of the guy gladiators Gemini, Ni-tro and Malibu and the silicone sizzle of girl gladiators Lace, Zap and Sunny, it's a chance anyone on steroids wouldn't want to pass up. You want action? You want super-heroes? You want Rambo? Watch the men and women (in separate competitions) doing the Joust (on a 30-foot-high platform) or Human Cannonball (contenders, swinging feet first from a rope 30 feet away, try to knock gladiators off 17-foot platform), or taking their shots at Powerball, a no-holds-barred spin on basketball. Our favorite, however, is Assault, in which gladiators get to take potshots at contenders with a weapon that fires tennis balls at 100 mph. It's a spectacle that, appropriately enough, takes place at Universal Studios in Hollywood, where the shows are taped before live (but not necessarily thinking) studio Chuck Howard, 11-time Emmy Award winner for ABC Sports, is producer of this bizarre hour, which began as a movie outline based on real-life competition between steel-workers in Youngstown, Ohio, but was snapped up instead for late-night programming.

Syndication's new hell-on-wheels "Rollergames," on the other hand, is a rock 'n' roller derby. In the just-broadcast premiere episode, for example, "Blondie" rock star Deborah Harry performed in concert, and future acts lined up for the derby include Ozzy Osborne and the Ra-mones. But even the bat-eating Osborne may have a tough time getting noticed around the Super Concourse rink a new, high-speed, high-banked, figure-eight contrivance where six teams of roller guys and gals go at it on the "Wall of Death" the "Jet Jump" and the "Hawaiian Curve," not to mention (we're not kidding here) a real, live alligator pit filled with 6- to 12-foot gators. The team names are no less camp, Music and Lyrical Lee Hoktridge, Melanie, "Beauty and the Beast: A Distant Shore" (song title: "The First Time I Loved CBS. Sound lotting.
