Mark Lamos, artistic director of The Hartford Stage Company, directed for the stage; Kirk Browning is director for television. Also today is something special for baby boomers who remember "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," the '60s spy show that starred Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin.

Two of the "U.N.C.L.E." movies, both released in 1966 at the height of "U.N.C.L.E." 's popularity, are broadcast on TNT: "The Spy With My Face" (9 a.m.) and "To Trap a Spy" (2:15 a.m.). Solo and Kuryakin's assignment to "maintain political and legal order anywhere in the world" lasted just four seasons but rocketed Vaughn and McCallum to international stardom, made Illya's turtlenecks a fashion fad and caused the United Nations to be flooded with job applications from confused fans who believed the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement was real. "To Trap a Spy" is an expanded version of the series pilot. Instead of THRUSH, Solo's adversary is WASP, and U.N.C.L.E. chief Alexander Waverly (Leo G.

Carroll) is replaced by Mr. Allison (Will Kuluva). "The Spy With My Face" is expanded from a first-season episode about a THRUSH double for Solo. Othr highlights "Highway to Heaven" (NBC at 8) is the evening's only original entertainment show. This week, Michael Landon takes on the press when Jonathan teaches a budding Woodward-and-Bernstein team the importance of responsible reporting.

Sylvia Sidney also stars in this 1987 TV movie. A soap-opera cast headlines "Haunted by Her Past" (NBC at 9), a TV movie from 1987. It's a Gothic romance starring Susan Lucci My as a woman possessed, John James as her husband and Finola Hughes as the ghost of an infamous murderess.

A person sent me the memo with this note: "My boss is driving me nuts with all these selves." By JAMES ENDRST Courant TV Writer WFSB (Channel 3) continues to be the dominant news station in the Hartford-New Haven market; independent station WTIC (Channel 61) has gotten off to a disappointing start with its local weeknight newscast and independent WHCT (Channel 18) is showing few signs of a ratings pulse, according to results from the May sweeps.

The May sweeps are one of three key rating periods each year that local stations use to set their advertising rates. Results from the May ratings period arrived this week, and both Nielsen Media Research ratings, WFSB and WTNH tied with a 7 rating and 19 share each (though WFSB got the edge in Arbitron), WVIT came in third with a 4 rating and 12 share, and WTIC scored a 2 rating and 7 share to WTXX's 1 rating and 4 share. Connecticut Public Television, by comparison, had a 1 rating and 2 share in Nielsen. The prime-time race was close among the affiliates, with WFSB edging WTNH, and WVTT an extremely close third. In Nielsen, WFSB came up with a 12 rating and 20 share; WTNH finished with an 11 rating and 19 share and WVTT had an 11 rating and 18 share.

and Arbitron Television rating services show CBS affiliate WFSB beating ABC affiliate WTNH (Channel 8) by comfortable margins in the weeknight news race at 5, 5:30 and 6 and 11 p.m. In Nielsen the rating service used by most stations here Channel 3 scored a 14 rating and 28 share at 6 p.m. to Channel 8's 11 rating and 22 share. NBC affiliate WVIT (Channel 30) scored a 4 rating and 9 share at 6 p.m. Each rating point is equal to 1 percent of the Hartford-New Haven market's 884,310 households with television.

Each share point is equal to 1 percent of the viewing audience. ings. The station was below mini-mam audience levels in the sign-on to sign-off category, which averages ratings over the course of the broadcast week. New London independent WTWS (Channel 26) was also below minimum audience measurement in both ratings services. (Nielsen uses automated meters to measure ratings, and Arbitron uses a method involving diaries.) In the ratings race among independents, WTIC (Channel 61) continues to top rival WTXX (Channel 20), beating the station in the sign-on to sign-off categories and in prime time in both rating services.

In Nielsen's sign-on to sign-off "WTIC News at 10," meanwhile, fell short of station projections to advertisers and in Nielsen results was off the pace in reruns of "Star Trek" in the same time period a year ago. Channel 61's local newscast came up with a 2 rating and 4 share in Nielsen compared with a 4 rating and 7 share for the first half-hour of "Star Trek" last year. Meanwhile, perpetually troubled Channel 18 which has been running all manner of program-length commercials, programming from a home-shopping network and very few real shows thanks to its current state of financial bankruptcy, is paying the price in faltering rat If money can't buy me happiness, I'll suffer Words yj ALL fUVI.Ii I Erma Bombeck Rp)GpO VREE3 Maybe your boss just has a multiple personality. My parents the Waltons would love the Soviet Union's lottery. The cost of a lottery ticket is 50 kopecks (about 81 cents).

They take away the problem of what to do with large sums of money by offering gifts instead. Recently, in the Ukraine, a winner named Ira walked off with several rolls of toilet paper, a towel and a small bowl. Other lucky ticket holders won hens, pigs, goats, detergent and soap all items coveted more than money. But getting back to capitalism. My parents have never understood me.

Just once, I want to be able to buy respect and affection. I want to torture myself with the question, "Do my friends really like me or my fortune?" Don't you wonder what happens to people when they suddenly come into a (US million jackpot? Do they still turn a dress inside out looking for a price tag before they buy it? Do they continue to count their change before putting it in their pockets? Or are they able to shed the old lifestyle like a bad hairpiece and move up to capping the dog's teeth and bathing in designer water? My parents have ruined me for any chance of corruption-by-money I might have enjoyed. They were parents of the Depression who handed down a set of values that have not changed in 50 years.
