AFTERNOON I --vJNA, Burgess f'ereditti The haunting memory of her first love almost wrecks a young girl's marriage. But Christmas-time magic and a little girl's danger bring her back to her love of today. Open A Account! li 1 Popular Records By ALFRED D. CHARLES LOTS of arrangement have been made since Hoagy Carmichael penned his famed "Stardust" more than a decade ago. It's been swung and it's been cried over and it comes as near as any tune to being the supreme achievement of Tin Pan Alley.

Of the recordings (and there must be nearly a hundred), this department has preferred the Victor coupling of two Stardusts one side by Tommy Dor-sey, the other by Benny Goodman. Dorscy now has a new version, and it is released at the same time Victor offers an Artie Shaw arrangement. There are some who can't think of a better week: than one in which two new "Stardusts" appear. The latest arrangements give such fans the choice between an emotional rendition by Dorsey which shows the "I'll-Never-Smile-Again influence and an instrumental rendition by Shaw which fea tures his fluid clarinet above strings. Dorsey uses vocals by Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers throughout most of the disc and it is for armchair listening.

Shaw uses no vocal and it is for ballroom listeners. For straight dancing, though, you'd better stick to the earlier Dorsey and Goodman record. But you can't let "Stardust" fans off like that: they'll get both new records and won't go far wrong in doing so. Incidentally. Dorsey backs up his new "Stardust" with, a swingish version of "Swanee River," which threatens to burst its banks while flowing merrily along, and Shaw backs his "Stardust" with "Temptation," Dinah Shore "Yes, My Darling Daughter," as sung by Dinah Shore (Bluebird) is some thing you shouldn't let Dass without hearing.

It's a coming tune and tfie songstress does it better than others who have tried their voices "at it Duke Ellington and his star bass player, Jimmy Blanton go to great trouble to demonstrate the limitations of the bull fiddle in jazz. On "Pitter Panther Patter" (Victor) Blanton does some superb string plucking, while the Duke plays a nimble piano. But on, the reverse, "Sophisticated Lady," Blanton uses a bow for some passages and the result is pitiful. For the very latest Christmas shoppers who want a dance tun with jingle bells, several oldies may come in handy. There is Tommy Dorsey's "ianta Claus is Com in to Town" (Victor), coupled with Benny Good man's "Jingle Bells" swung, not rung.

Fats Waller goes a bit further, calling his Yule offering "Swingin Them Jingle Bells" (Bluebird). Xavier Cugat Xavier Cugat, recording now for Columbia, has turned out a ne'w and novel arrangement of one of the first popular to be played fre quently in the United States "The Peanut Vendor." It has a verve and bounce which rumba dancers will find difficult to resist For a coupling, Cugat plays another old rumba favorite, "Mama Inez," which is recommended for Latin-American rhythm fans. Both numbers combine Cugat's best solo and ensem ble effects, barked up by a suDerb rhythm (skin) section. One of the last numbers recorded for Victor by Cugat deserves mention. It is "Los Hijos de Buda," a Latin-American folk dance with a delightful lilt and melody.

(ITT now mucn ooes tully equipped To Gasify Coal Russian scientists announce an im proved method of gasifying coal underground. According to B. Cernyshev, who led the research, the new process will eliminate shafts and drifts, thus reducing costs. Like methods worked out in recent years it consists in.

burning coal directly in th seam and using the resulting gas. This does away with mining the coal and transporting it to the consumer. Two wells are sunk in the coal seam. After combustion starts compressed air is- blown into one well, and gas issues from the other. The process will be exploited in the Moscow, Chelyabinsk and other coal fields rich In lignites with a hie-h sulphur and ash content.
