How doctoring the beer of a proctor caused the closing of University College, in Oxford, for a year, has just been revealed by Howard Linford, of Hampstead. Linford said trouble arose in 1880 over M. Chavasse, one of the proctors, afterward Bishop of Liverpool, who was unpopular. When Chavasse was entertaining in his rooms, the beer for the party was doctored with drugs. A scout having been bribed, the door of the room was glued tight.

A constable a fire escape down which the brought guests emerged to the a. of a large crowd. The master of University College requested those responsible to own up. As no one came forward the whole college was suspended. "There was little wonder no University College man owned up," said Linford.

"The perpe trators of the joke were six students from other colleges." PHOTOGRAPHS COPIED -RENEWED -BY BachrachVernon 8330 921 N. Charles St. -BY St. 3 ALT 21 unite.
