B6 Performance THE SUN, Tuesday, October 31, lilt Weather Report electric jazz at Lyric tonight i i. i 1 ik.i VaI ji it. -n n. i i 1 i i.i:n..i i that lies within this curious' looking pack' soprano saxophone, stating the tune's mel By Frederick I. Douglass cleans it with all the space age technology The album cover's painting leaps out at you, taking you aback with its Salvador Dali-like artistic motifs that are indicative of the music inside.

The album is by Weather Report, the all-electric jazz group appearing at the Lyric Theatre tonight. Entranced by the artwork, you pick up the album, turn it over and discover yet another surrealistic painting that whirl-pools your curiosity to search out what kind of music is etched on the vinyl disc 1 A ffoKc1 '-i available to him and slaps the record on the turntable. Soon the room is filled with the sounds of Weather Report playing "River People." The tune opens with a suspended chord played on the synthesizer keyboard by Josef Zawinul to which Jacob Pastorious makes contrapuntal replies on the bass. Mr. Zawinul begins overlaying textures of sounds that he produces from keyboard contraptions with names like ARP Ober-heim Synthesizer, Two ARP 2600, Prophet 5, Mu-Tron Bi-Phase and Mu-Tron Volume Wah.

Next Wayne Shorter joins in on the Josef Zawinul, and Manolo Badrena. anhattan FEUDING AD INFINITUM: Joan Fon-taine was defending herself at Los Mad-riles, saying one reason for being unable to kiss and make up with sister Olivia de Havilland is: "I haven't been able to forgive her for not inviting me to our mother's memorial service. Incidentally, I'feel it's all right to say things as I experienced them, because we're both alive, but I don't approve of the way Joan Crawford's being attacked, as Joan can't defend herself." Knight Ntws Service Stones to perform in 'blind', concert Mick Jagger says that all members of the Rolling Stones rock group will perform with guitarist Keith Richards at a court-ordered benefit for the blind in Toronto, Ont. Richards was ordered to perform for the benefit of the blind as a condition of his probation after be pleaded guilty to a heroin possession charge. "We'll all rally round and join Keith" Mr.

Jagger said. "I would have thought the judge would have got us to do a show for a drug-addiction center, but if it's for the blind kids, that's okay with us." Knight Newt Service Weather Report (tonight at Lyric): Wayne Shorter; Alejandro Acuna; Jacob Pastorious; Woody's restaurant tour of Motorcycle madness '2'4 The "Globe of Death," in which two motorcyclists dangerously whizby a young woman at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour, is one of the at tractions of the 39th annual Boumi Temple Shrine Circus, to be held starting today through Sunday at the Baltimore Civic Center. Show-times will be 10 A.M. and 8.15 P.M. todav and tomorrow: 4.15 and 8.11 age.

The man behind the counter at the record store smiles knowingly as you approach him. He pulls out a copy of Weath- The rhythm method er Report's "Mr. Gone" album and offers to play a sampling of the music for you. With magician-like movements of his hands he removes the shiny black disc with the red label from the dust jacket, VIGNETTE: Alexis Smith of the upcoming musical "Platinum" and Ethel Merman were just two filming for the Sesame Street Christmas show on TV. Miss Merman arrived sans any aides or helpers and proceeded to do her own characteristically fuzzy hairstyle.

She then gave it a good spritz with hairspray. Joe Tubens, who was working on the coiffure of Alexis, was horrified. "Oh, Miss Merman," he said, "hairspray is terrible for your lungs!" Merman gave herself another spritz and bellowed: "There's nothing wrong with MY lungs!" Since they heard her all the way to Pasadena, there certainly isn't. WHAT'S GOIN' ON: They are testing about 10 different women for the lead opposite John Travolta in "American Gigolo." Tuesday Weld and Candy Bergen also are waiting in the wings. Only if they want Tuesday, she WON'T test for it; and Candy CAN'T test because she is busy making "Starting Over" with Burt Reynolds and Jill Clayburgh in New York and Boston.

(The latter is sort of a reverse on "An Unmarried Woman." Reynolds splits with his wife, Candy, and meets a girl, Jill. He is said to have received $2 million up front for this Alan Pakula-directed movie.) Diana Ross passed on doing "Cuba" with Sean Connery and so it looks like Brooke Adams will get to share in the Richard Lester-directed production about a pre-Castro Havana. She is a hot young ingenue since "Days of Heaven." Brooke also has the remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" in the can, as well as "A Man. A Woman and a Bank." John Ritter has two movies in the works to remind us he isn't only a flash in TV's Three's Company. One is "America-thon," a screwball comedy about a future bankrupt U.S.A.

wherein John, as president, holds a telethon for the country. The other is MGM's "Captain Avenger" which starts filming late in February. Marty Davidson, onetime agent for Ali Mac-Graw, will direct. UPHEAVALS AT ICM? The talent agency is said to be rocking with departures by Billy Barnes, Ed LaMotta and Bob Bookman. Well, let me put it straight Bookman is not (repeat not) leaving the big talent agency Barnes, who represents Tennessee Williams, is leaving to produce And Ed LaMotta's position is 50-50.

He may go; he may stay. He could exit to manage the hot new star Richard Gere. Sue Mengers? Of course she hasn't left ICM; she is ICM. Sue is vacationing in Europe with her hubby, Jean Claude P.M. Thursday and Friday; 10 Sunday.

Admission is $5, $4 Lelouch: man San Francisco (AP) Claude Lelouch isn't your typical high-brow French film director. He's direct and funny and he hates intellectuals. "I've declared war against intellectuals because they're boring," said Mr. Lelouch, 41, who has been writing and directing comedies for almost 20 years. "I like real people, who know that life is a big put-on but enjoy it," he said.

"I prefer a real lunatic to a fake one." And he likes true stories. Mr. Lelouch's new comedy, "Robert and Robert," is based on the experiences of his friend Jacques Villeret, a rotund actor who plays himself in the fable about a computer dating service. The film, which was shown for the first time at the San Francisco Film Festival AMUSEMENTS ody and Weather Report is off on a tangent into the uncharted realm of improvisatory music. The tempo shifts slightly.

The repeated bass line becomes insistent. While you stand there hypnotized by the mesmerizing rhythms of Weather Report, the man behind the sales counter gives you a history lesson. "In the beginning of electronic music, he says, "there was Miles Davis. Miles was always trying new things, searching for new sounds. One day Miles hooked up his trumpet to an amplifier and began hiring all kinds of cats to play guitar and electronic keyboards.

"This was after Miles had already established himself as the leading trumpet player from back in his bop days with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie on down through his avant garde jazz trip with John Coltrane. Miles went electronic and started hanging out with musicians like Wayne Shorter, a helluva tenor and soprano saxophonist; Tony Williams, who played drums professionally at 16 with alto saxophonist Jackie McLean; Joe Zawinul, that cat from Vienna who used to play keyboards in Cannonball Adderley's group, and a lot of other cats that were into electronic experimentation." While you continue to talk, the record salesman moves the needle to "Mr. Gone," the title track of the album, without missing a syllable of his incessant riff. Still immersed in the electronic space age sounds of Weather Report, you continue to half-listen to his rap. "Anyway, Miles could never be satisfied with one group of musicians because he is always seeking out something totally different.

So all of these cats became graduates of the University of Miles Davis and disciples of his music who went out to spread the new jazz gospel according to Miles. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Henderson formed Weather Report in 1970 along with some other cats. Hey man, like, Downbeat magazine's readers have voted these cats 'Group of the Year' for seven years in a row. Japan's Swing Journal awarded Weather Report its 'Silver Zawinul's composition 'Birdland' received a Grammy nomination. Weather Report has recorded some heavy albums.

'I Sing the Body 'Tale 'Heavy 'Mysterious Traveler 'Black 'Sweet By now you are trying to tune out the salesman so that you can concentrate on Weather Report's pulsating jungle rhythms on "Pursuit of the Woman With the Feathered Hat" which is percolating in the background, but not quite loud enough to drown out the saleman's endless chatter. But something' he says catches your ears: was that, did you say that Weather Report was going to be in town tonight?" The salesman nods his head and says that they will be at the Lyric Theatre. Rummaging through your pocket you find enough crumpled and deflated dollar bills to purchase a copy of "Mr. Gone" and two tickets for tonight's concert. "You'll be back for another Weather Report," quips the salesman as you hastily exit from the record store on the way home to groove to your latest LP and prepare to hear Weather Report playing tunes like "Sweet Nighter" and "Birdland" in concert tonight at the Lyric.

MAKE IT ANOTHER MANHATTAN: Woody Allen's latest, currently shooting in the East and tentatively titled is making use of all the special landmark haunts beloved of native New Yorkers. Woody plays a struggling writer in this one and he filmed a "typical" literary party for Pete Hamill and his successful new genre of detective novels in the venerable Gotham Book Mart. Woody also has included scenes at Pearl's, his favorite Chinese restaurant; at the Russian Tea Room, his favorite Russian restaurant; at Maxwell's Plum, where he doesn't feel especially comfortable because of the tourists, and at Elaine's, where he does feel comfortable because everybody is too chic to bother him. There also are scenes in several of our best art galleries and in the Rizzoli Book Store on Fifth avenue. Sounds like fun.

Bernie Cornfeld, the big money man who got in a jam over mutual fund shenanigans, lost his company and went to Peoph jail in Europe, is still living royally out in California. He will soon resume his life as a bachelor in paradise, having split with his wife. The great Stevie Wonder is busy writing songs for a new John Travolta musical film. Frank Sinatra's important pal barrister Mickey Rudin will marry Mary Carol Logan on November 4 in Beverly Hills with 01' Blue Eyes as best man. The couple will honeymoon in Rio, so who says "The Boys from Brazil" hurts tourism? THE OTHER HALF LIVING: Recently Jules and Doris Stein decided to give a party for visiting Europeans in the offices of Stein's own company, MCA, the great talent agency.

A grand time was had by all at this catered affair in the elaborately decorated offices full of fine furniture and posh objects. But when the help was slow in collecting plates after the dinner, realtor and man-about-the-world Jerome Zipkin started sliding the the dirty dishes into office desks. Zipkin filled up every available empty drawer and file cabinet and closet. Must have been a lot of laughs when the peons came to work the next day and discovered all that crockery with the leftover pasta on it. REMEMBER back when Kate Jackson married Andrew Stevens? This column said then that Jaclyn Smith and Dennis Cole would soon follow suit and lo and behold, they did over last weekend.

Congratulations to the beautiful couple. Movies mE' We have wi rare A ji bird. Our Mosaic Opal Parrot Pendant A.M., 3 and 8 P.M. Saturday, and 2 P.M i and $2. Call 435-0644 for information.
