His favorite form of increasing the efficiency of the United States Secret Service was to grab his hat, bolt out, the White House door, trailed by the oldtimer oC the Executive Mansion bodyguard, Joseph E. In foiling of the trials and tribulations of Murphy-shadow-man of Presidents the well-known writer says: "I asked Murphy one day about some of Roosevelt's athletics, and he said: 'You had to be in line shape to keep up to Roosevelt.

Girls At THE Sokolska Jednota Blesk, at the J1 i. is a great factor in building healthy bodies and minds among the children and young men find women of their nationality. The sturdy Bohemians of Northeast Baltimore, sending their children to the gymnasium, generally at the age of about 6, take pride in the institution. The membership, those who take an active' part in gymnastics, numbers about 200 children, boys and girls; about Jo young women and 50 young men. The instructor, Trof.

Frank Stetka, who has seen about 25 years' service in his work, has turned out some of the best gymnasts and all-round athletes in the coun try. No effort is made to specialize any particular branch of sport, the aim being to produce men who can hold their own in all branches of sports. On Tuesdays and Fridays, from to 8.30 P. M.r Professor Stetka devotes his attention to the boys, starting with about 15 minutes in free-hand exercises, followed bv simple stunts on the horizontal or parallel bars, flying rings or horse. Then comes basketball or indoor baseball for the rest of the period.

By this time the young men have assembled for their biweekly exercises which follow the general lines above described, however, being much more advanced, and each of the three classes having its own leader, elect- ea for one year, and all being under the supervision of Professor Stetka. Girls' and ladies' nights, Wednesdays and Saturdays, are devoted to fancy drillinc. free-hand exercises, high jump, rarojpd jump aniraes, -tbe; graceful beauty with which all ot tnese exercises are executed amply proving the great benefits derived. Each year those who have become pro ficient their work are advanced to a higher grade, until, having completed the course and taken part in the several pub lic exhibitions and tournaments which are held each year in Baltimore and ether cities (to which representatives are sent), are awarded diplomas, in addition to whatever individual honors they may have been able to acquire. The gymnasium is now being improved and modernly equipped, with a view to placing teams in the field iu all branches of sports, including basketball, track and baseball.

There will also be representa tives of the S. J. B. in high jump, broad jump, pole vault, shotput and hammer throwing. Many people have an idea that these Bohemian gymnasts are different from any others and cannot imagine that they spend their entire leisure time in the promotion of this work.

A brief history of Its origin among these peoples will not be amiss. About 50 years ago, when the Czechoslovaks, or Bohemians, were serfs under Austria, Jan Fuegner and Miroslav Tyrs, two of their leaders founded a branch of "Sokols," as they are called, for physical development of their nation, be held in New York in the near future, the aim being to secure the best all-round athletes among the Sokols in the entire United States to compete with those in Europe. liufus Wallingford is now en route to the New Mexico penitentiary, and Sheriff Fox, having allowed the game to continue until the identity of the prisoner was revealed, is refunding the victims' checks. Strolling down; a Lyons street last summer munching peanuts, he stole a purse belonging to Mrs. Harry Livingston the car. Two hours later he was captured by Sheriff Fox with the Livingston money in 'his overalls and still munching peanuts. In his possession was found a stolen shotgun belonging to W.

C. Weibe, also a quart of chloroform and. a spray such as burglars use. Simultaneously with his sentence to jail for petit larceny his Jules Verne irav agination became active. Composing a five-line advertisement, he asked Sher iff Fox to post it to a well-known maga zine which that official, after reading it; obligingly did.

In a short time checks for the alfalfa seed began to arrive in every mail. These De Your 'had deposited to his credit iu a Lyons bank. Then one morning a mongrel houn' dawg followed the Sheriff into the jail corridor and remained there ufter the officer left. And presto De had another idea. Writing to a ranchman in New Mexico, the former convict described in irresistible language the merits and highly trained efficiency of a pedigreed shepherd dog he owned, which, as he was selling his big cattle ranch, he had no further use for and which he would let this New Mexican have for $25.

The dog left the jail the next day, brt within a week the ranchman sent a $25 check, which De Vour deposited with his constantly mounting balance. Then, the first of the month coming around, DeVour recalled a little formality required of every penitentiary warden. Ignorant of the fact that his mail was being regularly opened by Sheriff Fox, he wrote the warden of the New Mexican Penitentiary. He advised him that he had saved $400 since hte parole, was living in Lyons, where he had employment in the i.alt mines and where, by his skill and exemplary conduct, he had been made mine superintendent and given an automobile and control of a gang. Sheriff Fox, having obtained the information he sought, slipped a note into the letter telling the warden a few additional details, and this week a deputy arrived to take the jail financier back to the penitentiary.

In the meantime DeVour had continued to demonstrate the efficiency of advertising by another two-line reader, in which he offered for sale 6,000 pounds of pinto beans at 6 cents a pound. In response he received something like a bushel of mail, all of which the Sheriff's office is carefully sorting out and re- turning to the writers. a. a for a VicttroHa Model Slmll arly pleasing low prices on all other models of Ylctrolas. v.

Many of the spectators seemed to want to gt in, but the fame of the Good Companions as problem solvers caused cold feet. Had they been able to foresee the result, there would no doubt have many more entries, as first prize was won by Joseph Glatt, a young chess player who had. never before been heard of as a problemist. Mr. Glatt has only been playing chess a couple of years, and has recently been distinguishing himself in play at the association.

Among the many clever young players the Baltimore club has gathered iu Glatt is among the most promising. Second prize was won by Mr. Arthur Hale, who is not only a Good Com-pion but a member of the Baltimore and Washington clubs. He has for many years been known as an able and distinguished chess player, and it was expected that he would be in the lead at the finish. It should interest Baltimoreans to learn that one of the visitors to the tournament, a man who has played in all the great clless clubs of the country, was hoard to remark: "Baltimore has the best chess club I have seen.

The organization of Sokols has kept up its gymnastic work and new branches have sprung up in all cities of the United States each maintaining a gymnasium for the development of the younger generation. They believe that a clean mind and a sound body arc the greatest assets in life. It has been said that the institute has served as a leader in the development of antituberculosis work'in the United States.
