Duke's Passing Attack Beats Pittsburgh Eleven By 28-14 TODAY BRINGS to a close a Na- ional League season that comes up to the final day with two amaz- ng things to consider. This final game of the pennant schedule, as if you didn't know, finds Brooklyn's famed Bums meet ing Philadelphia's Whiz Kids. It finds them separated by one game, with the Bums needing this victory for a tie, and a playoff, as you very well know. The two features that are more than mildly astonishing in connec tion with this grand windup defy a convincing answer. One has to do with the shocking foldup of Manager Eddie Sawyer's Whiz team.

They fought a grand battle all season to come up with a fat seven- game cushion as the final 11 days of play loomed. Since then they have lost tneir Whiz entirely, retaining only the Kids' part, as they sagged like a wet paper bag and dropped eight of their next 10 games. They can save themselves, minus a playoff, by winning today final. The law of averages, if nothing else. should step in today in their favor.

ft And The Bums THE OTHER amazing angle to this windup has to do with the Brooklyn club. Here was an outfit that had done a lot of staggering through the season, and at one time was counted out. but definitely, even by its well wishers. Then as the Phils started melting away like a snowball in a hot sun the Bums opened up with a roar and boomed down the track full throttle. They have won 13 of their last 16 tests.

So What? THERE'S no reason to get wrinkled trving to account for these things The Whiz Kids had a tax put on their morale as well as their ability to win games when Curt Simmons, their big mound ace, was Waken into service. Things began to get out of hand shortly after, and the Kids finally sagged under the pressure, as their few games minus an error or mis plav of some sort, attest. What hit Brooklyn at the same time isn't certain. The only thing you recall is that their surge started about the time that it was announced that Branch Rickey was going to sell out next season. This was purely coincidental, but still interesting.

They're Off! THOSE STALWART Maryland football fans had their reward yesterday as their beloved Terps started the Navy footballers off in their usual fashion; in the rear of the eight ball. Maryland, as you will note, won any meal half. 21 to 14. But football being a game where they really play two separate contests, called halves, and then add up the total score, the Terps took down the laurels. 30- (P) Pennsylvania's young football team upset Virginia, 21 to 7, today. Long addicted to the single-wing offensive, Penn used the old Fielding Yost buck lateral attack to strike for three aerial touchdowns within nine minutes of the third period. Penn wasted away four scoring opportunites in the first half or the final score would have been humiliating to the ambitious Southerners, rated one of the nation's powers in preseason estimates. Bagnell Tosses Two Red Bagnell threw two touch down strikes, one for 27 yards to Tom Hanlon and another for 53 to John Moses. Dave Coulson con nected on the other, a 14-yard aer ial to Glenn Adams.

Virginia's lone score, which gave the Southerners an 7-to-0 halftime edge, came on a 60-yard pass play from Rufe Barkley to Steve Osisek. A few moments earlier, Virginia's track star. Gene Schroeder, brought the spectators to their feet by sprinting 75 yards with a punt, but Alan Corso stopped him and vir ginia couldn't score. After that, the Southerners coulfl gain only 38 yards through the out weighed, sophomore Penn line, led by Eddie Bell, its first Negro end. Makes Great Catch Wliile Penn's running attack ground the Virginia line to bits, it was the aerial attack that paid off.

Penns final touchdown came on the most spectacular play of the game. Bagnell, trapped, faded, ducked away from three tacklers and let fly cross-field for 40 yards Moses, a sophomore, leaped up between two Virginia defenders, grabbed the ball, danced along the sidelines for 13 yards and the score. Oklahoma Blanks Boston College Norman, Sept. 30 fP) Bud Wilkinson trotted out his Okla homa football team for its first showing of the season today and the Sugar Bowl champions wal loped Boston College, 28 to 0, to run their victory string to 22 straight games. Although they took command at the outset and never were seriously threatened, the Oklahomans lacked the explosiveness of their 1949 predecessors who ranked second only to Notre Dame in the A.P. national poll.

But they satisfied 33,000 partisan fans by exhibiting a couple of promising holdover halfbacks in Buddy Jones and Tommy Gray and a line that refused to give ground except in inconsequential chunks. For Coach Denny Myers, it was only the second shutout in his ten years at Boston College. The first came last year when Oklahoma triumphed 46 to 0 in the seasbn opener at Boston. Oklahoma marched 53 and 41 yards for touchdowns in the first and second periods, then struck through the air for a third counter before calling it a day by cashing in on a third period Boston fumble. Quantico Marines Trim Virginia Tech, 61 To 21 Blacksburg, Sept.

30 (JP) Virginia Tech's last half comeback failed to deter the Quantico Marines for a 61-to-21 football victory today at Miles Stadium. Texas Gains 34-26 Victory Over Purilue Austin, Texas, Sept. 30 JP) The University of Texas football team, two-touchdown favorites over Purdue, was hard-pushed to win, 34 to 26, today.

ALL RIDES Halfback Scores On Pass, Sets Up Other Touchdown Ann Arbor, Sept. 30 (fP) Michigan State College defeated Michigan, the Big Ten football co- champion, here today, 14 to 7.

A capacity crowd of 97,239 saw the State eleven, cocky and confi dent, score touchdowns in the first and final periods and hang up its first trimuph in 13 "years of grid rivalry with Michigan. Sonny Grandelius. 195-pound State halfback, ripped through and around the Michigan line and accounted for the first State Fullback Leroy Crane dashed into the Michigan end zone in the final period to sew up a victory that Michigan partisans couldn't quite believe. Fans Congratulate State A huge delegation of Michigan State followers swarmed out of the stadium seats to congratulate their team which finally made the grade. The Michigan squad, which hasn't lost an opener since its 14-to-19 loss to State in 1937, walked dejectedly from the field.

Michigan State, which bowed to Michigan, 3 to 7, last year, jumped into this game enthusiastically. Michigan, rated third in the Asso ciated Press preseason poll, suf fered the loss of its star performer, Chuck Ortmann, early in the game After the State touchdown, Ort mann ran back the next kickoff 35 yards to his own 36, where he was hat by Bob Carey and State's swift defensive halfback, Jesse Thomas. Michigan Evens Score On the next play, when Ortmann attempted to pass, he pivoted and sank to the ground. He was re moved from the game and never returned, although trainers continued to work on him on the sidelines. Michigan evened the score in the third period on a 26-yard pass play, Don Peterson to End Fred Pickard.

In the final period, Thomas ran Leo Koceski's end-zone punt back to the Michigan 19 and in two more plays State scored its second touchdown. Two Bids Fail The Big Ten cochamps made two strong scoring bids. Late in the second period, with Fullback Don Dufek carrying most of the load, they rolled 55 yards but stalled on State's 22. Earlier, they got to Michigan State's 10 but were stopped when Thomas intercepted a pass by Bill Putich, Michigan quarterback. Joining Grandelius and Crane in the strong State attack was Al Dorow, a smooth-passing junior.

Dorow pitched the opening-period touchdown pass to Grandelius and was a thorn in Michigan's side all afternoon. Early in the game, Michigan State drove to the Michigan 1-inch line where the latter made a brilliant goal-line stand. The crowd settled back for a dogfight, but State would not be denied. Dorow Hurls Scoring Pass Starting on their own 33, Coach Biggie Munn's team moved. Grandelius ripped off 30 yards on one play and was only kept from a touchdown when Ortmann knocked him out of bounds on the Michigan 24.

With the help of Sophomore Vince Pisano and Crane, State pushed to the Michigan 6 and Dorow flipped a touchdown pass to Grandelius. Grandelius again was the sparkplug in the final period when he picked up 10 yards and a first down on Michigan's 8-yard line. Crane scored on the next play. Michigan's only score was set up by Sophomore Frank Howell. Howell intercepted one of Dorow's passes and ran it back 32 yards to the Michigan State 20.

After two plays lost seven yards, Peterson faded back it pitched one in the end zone to Pickard. Harry Allis converted. To Face Maryland But that was all for Michigan, which fought with all it had while five Army scouts looked on in preparation for the Army-Michigan game in New York's Yankee Stadium October 14. Thus Michigan, rated only behind Notre Dame and Army in the Associated Press poll, is certain to slide considerably in ranking before its meeting next week with Dartmouth. The victorious Michigan State contingent returned to East Lansing to prepare for a meeting with Maryland.

30 (P) Ed Senay and Bob Spears led Yale to a 36-to-12 victory over Brown today in an Ivy League football inaugural. They each tallied a pair of touchdowns in a free-scoring first half and enabled Yale to coast to victory. The triumph may have been somewhat costly to Yale, for Senay injured his right leg just before the third period ended. The same leg was fractured a year ago and forced him to the sidelines. Until removed from the lineup.

Senay off 170 yards in 21 rushes, including spectacular touchdown gallops of 44 and 30 yards. When he wasn't carrying the ball, he frequently served as Yale's passer and receiver." Senay Given Ovation When the 175-pound Senay, a junior from Holyoke, finally left the field, the crowd of 35,000, many in shirtsleeves, gave him a tremendous chetr. It reminded vet erans of the prewar receptions they used to give here to Albie Booth, Clint Frank and Larry Kelley, Yale immortals. While Senay and Spears's pow er smashes were outstanding, Yale also showed some talented per formers in Quarterback Stu dale, Ends Brad Quackenbush. captain, and Sophomore Hal Wood sum, and Linemen Dave Prince and Rufus Phillips.

Brown Eleven Scores Brown seldom was in the ball game, the fifty-fifth between these rivals in which Yale holds a 42-to-11 edge. Twd games ended in ties. But Brown never surrendered. Yale piled up a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter on Spears's scores. Brown retaliated early in the second period on John Sar-son's 46-yard runback of an intercepted pass.

But Senay picked up from there, and that was it. Just before he left the contest, John Bush, who kicked the extra point twice on four attempts, booted a field goal from the 18-yard line. Jim Martland ended Brown's scoring for the day early in the final period by cutting off tackle from the 1-yard line. A long pass into the end zone, Jim Ryan to Quackenbush, closed the tallying. South Carolina Upsets Georgia Tech By 7-0 Atlanta, Sept. 30 (IP) South Carolina's football team shook Steve Wadiak loose late in the game to set up a touchdown which upset Georgia Tech. 7 to 0. today. The Carolina victory push moved 91 yards and crossed the goal with only four minutes to go.

Wadiak, a 190-pound halfback, ran through Tech for 35 yards. His run came to earth on the sideline, four yards from a score. Hootie Johnson cracked over guard for three yards. On the next play, Steve broke across center with four Tech players draped around his shoulders, hips and legs. sip) IRISH ELEVEN BY 14-7 Notre Dame Beats North Caro lina In Closing Minutes (Continued row first Sports Page) Mutscheller recovered on North Carolina's 10.

Three plays later, with the ball on the three, Williams stepped back and fired a short pass to Mutscheller in the end zone for a touchdown. Joe Caprada added the point for a 7-to-0 Irish lead. But then an apparent Irish walk away, in keeping with their three- touchdown favoritism, slowly faded before a North Carolina team that got more vicious as the game got older. Wlliams Completes 14 Passes The Tarheels, outrushed in the first half, 91 to 42, wound up ahead in ground yardage, 173 to 135. It was in the air.

with Williams completing 14 of 27 tosses for 128 yards, that North Carolina was whipped. The Tarheels completed only five of 17 tosses for 56 yards. I he North Carolina kickoff open ing the second half was fumbled after a return by Jack Landry. End George Norris recovered for North Carolina on Notre Dame's 17. The Tarheels didn't cash in on this break.

They yielded the ball on the Irish 18 after four futile plays. Bunting Goes 25 Yards But after Williams tried a daring pass from his end zone and punted 60 yards, the Tarheels caught fire for the first time in the game. Bunting slashed 25 yards on a reverse -that capped a 60-yard march to Notre Dame's 2. Here Notre Dame rose to its greatest defensive heights of the game. It was a goal-line stand that crushed three North Carolina stabs.

Then Paul Bruns, Irish guard, intercepted a pass by Bunting and raced 45 yards out of danger to midfield. Dunlay Makes Tackle The hero of this stand actually was Tackle Jim Dunlay, who darted through and draped himself around Bunting ankles, causing the Tarheel star to crash to the turf and let loose of the pass Burns filched. undaunted by this heart-break ing stall. North Carolina stormed to its only touchdown of the game within three minutes of the final period. The passing of Billy Hayes swept the Tarheels to the Notre Dame 20.

Then Wallace stormed 18 yards around Notre Dame's left end to the 2. On the next play, Wallace sailed untouched around the right Irish flank for a touchdown. Tarheels Wave Their Flags Fred Shermann added the point and the game was tied at 7 to 7, leaving a small NSrth Carolina con tingent madly waving Confederate flags. But Dave Flood, a great defen sive player for Notre Dame all afternoon, intercepted a Hayes pass and returned to Notre Dame's 44. Then the Irish looked like Notre Dame of old, clawing and tearing down to North Carolina's 25.

There Williams tossed the payoff pass to Mutscheller. All in all, it was a far cry from the 42-to-6 Notre Dame romp over North Carolina at Yankee Stadium last season, and it gave considerable substance to Coach Frank Leahy's plaint that he does net have the makings of a fifth straight un beaten Irish season. Weird Touchdown Run Features Modesto Game Modesto, Sept. 30 UP) Modesto Junior College defeated favored Los Angeles City College 20 to 12 here last night in a weird football game which saw a 105-yard touchdown run. The long run was made by Tom Novikoff, of Los Angeles, on a punt return.

Most of the players and officials thought the kick was dead in the end zone. But Novikoff grabbed the pikskin and rambled through the platoons of players changing positions, 'and scored. Nebraska And Indiana Fight Tie Lincoln, Sept. 30 UP) Sophomore Halfback Bobby Reynolds, made his football debut here todav as Nebraska and Indiana fought to a 20-to-20 tie. Reynolds scored all three Ne nrpska touchdowns and kicked the two conversions he attempted.

WINS Durham, N.C., Sept. 30 (IP) Duke's football team defeated Pittsburgh, 28 to 14, today. Shackled by the heavy Pitt line, Wallace Wade's charges struggled through a scoreless and somewhat lack-luster first half before they took charge via the air route. Wingback Tom Powers, who graduated last season from the intramural ranks, was on the receiving end of touchdown tosses by his two tailbacks, Capt. Billy Cox and Glenn Wild.

Cox Sets Up Score set up another score, Full back Jack Mounie smacking over from the 1. The other score came on a 60-yard run by Halfback Bob Bickel following a pass intercep tion. Pitt, making its first start under new coach l.en Casanova, came through with two long gainers, one set up by a Duke defensive lapse, to break the scoring ice and later tie the count at 14 to 14, but Pitt was unable to keep step in the clos ing minutes as the Duke attack put the game beyond recall. Each team missed a second-pe riod scoring opportunity. Powers cut short a Pitt drive that reached the six with an interception of Bob Bestwick's pass over the goal line.

Duke pushed down to the Pitt two, but Mounie fumbled on first down and the str.lemate continued. Sichko Runs 85 Yards The crowd of 25,000 which watched under leaden skies was jarred into life as Bill Sichko returned Ray Green's second-half kickoff 85 yards for a Pitt touch-dowr. Nick Bolkovac converted. Duke got that one back in a hurry. End Blaine Earon blocked Chris Warriner's punt and recov ered the ball on Pitt's 23.

Casanova said it was the first time a team he coached ever had a punt blocked. Cox To Powers Powers lost 10, but then Cox, from the 30, hit Powers on the 25. The lanky wingback toe-danced along the sideline for the score and End Mike Souchak converted to tie it up. Duke stepped ahead when Glenn Wild, replacing Cox at tailback, hit Powers from the 9 to wind up a 59-yard push. Souchak made it 14-7.
