But he said, it is difficult in a so ciety that places such emphasis on materi al possessions.

"According to Islam, money is only a trust that God has given you for the benefit of your family and others. You are only the custodian, but it is hard to explain that in a society that judges a person's impor tance on the basis of how much money he makes. In an Islamic society, how good an individual is is determined by how he treats ms teuow numan Deings." Whenever he can afford it, Mr. Khan said, he goes back to Kashmir with his family so that his children can see Islam in action. "They can see how I respect my respect my old teacher even dirt poor, and they see the elders give the children." that the experience of seeing a By GENE America offers a challenge to Islam, and whether it czn take root and survive here will be a test of the religion itself, according to Dr.

Mohamed Z. Awad, an Egyptian-born Towson physician and a co-founder of the Baltimore Islamic Society. Dr. Awad, who first came here in 1968 as an exchange professor to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, noted that Islam spread first in areas where per- sonal freedom was limited and its first converts were the enslaved and the impoverished. But if Islam can thrive in a sophisticated, technologically advanced and free-thinking society such as America, he said, it would be confirmation that the message that the Prophet Muhammad had for the world 1,400 years ago was a universal and timeless one.

For the moment, the main concern of Dr. Awad and other Muslims in this country, however, is to maintain their religion for themselves and to pass on their Islamic heritage to their children in the face of strong pressures toward assimilation. The result of this concern is the Islamic Society, which Dr. Awad and two other physicians founded 10 years ago. Dr.

Awad said there are about 100 families, mostly foreign-born Muslims from India, Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries, affiliated with the society. The group meets every Sunday in Shaffer Hall on the Homewood campus of the Johns Hopkins University for prayers, study and discussion of the scriptures, and Arabic lessons for those from non-Arab countries and a few American-born Muslims who also attend. There is also a children's program that gives religious instruction and Arabic lessons. For the Friday afternoon Jumah prayers, many of them go to mosques established by American Muslims: Muhammad's Mosque No. 6 in the 500 block Wilson street and the Masjid Saffat in the 1300 block Myrtle avenue, both in West Baltimore.

The Wilson street mosque is that of the so-called Black Muslims and has been there since 1958. It only became acceptable to foreign-born Muslims during the past three years, after the organization turned away from its former anti-white, black supremacist doctrines and embraced true Islam. The society, nevertheless, hopes to build a mosque of its own and has bought a parcel of land on Johnnycake road in Baltimore county, but it has not yet raised sufficient funds to start construction. Dr. Awad estimated that there are between 2,500 and 3,000 foreign-born Muslims living in the Baltimore area.

Most of them group together socially according to their nationality, he said, but more friendships and associations are beginning to be formed on the basis of a common religion. The melting-pot pressures appear to be especially strong among recent Muslim immigrants because most of them are highly educated professionals doctors, engineers, architects, scholars with com TOWSON 501 Hampton Lane, Towwn (Beltway Exit 27. Dr. Awad estimates that 95 per cent of Muslim immigrants have college degrees, and in many cases, graduate degrees from American universities. Raf ique Khan, a native of Kashmir and a project planner for the city Department of Housing and Community Development, said that Muslims who come to this country roughly break up into three groups. he said, have difficulty coping with the Western style of life, its materialistic emphasis, moral standards and the availability of alcohol and drugs both forbidden to Muslims.

Their answer, he said, is to become thoroughly orthodox and even more religiously observant than they were at home. Another group, he said, succumbs completely to the Western life-style and gives op the religion entirely. (AP)-The spreading use of guitar music in church worship endangers the church's heritage of great music, says a noted German composer, Heinz Werner Zimmermann. Zimmermann, of the State Music Academy in Frankfurt, told a workshop at Michigan State University here that he advocates genuine "contemporary expressions in church music, but I reject a modern style defined only by triviality. "Guitarists have a liking for syncopation, just as I do, but church music, even in syncopated style, should express something more than activism something spiritual, something timeless," he said.

"Where guitarists prefer to make church music as simple as possible, I prefer to make church music as rich as possible."
