THOMAS (Municipal Editor, The Winnipeg Triune) ANOTHER rdnight session! More discussion on matters that could have been decided In a few minutes. A solid hour was taken up over the question of employing a man in the plumbing department. Nearly as long was occupied in deciding to ask the province for power to exempt Improvements from assessment made under the federal housing scheme. There was something to be said for Alderman McLean's remark that it shouldn't have needed a minute's discussion. a In the public galleries It was radio night.

Half the radio dealers of the city were there, hoping to hear council turn down the Hydro's proposal to sell radios. Downstairs was a strong delegation of the dealers to explain why the proposal was iniquitous. The debate didn't come on for some time, but the dealers waited patiently. Alderman Simpkln, spokesman for the Hydro, put the case aa well as it could probably have been put. But the real point was overlooked.

It is not always wise in this world to do things which one has a perfect right to do, and that seems to apply to this question of the Hydro selling radios. For the present the matter goes back to committee by Mayor Queen's casting vote; Further re 69 Business Directory Adding, Calculating and Chackwriting Machines BALES COMPLETE REPAIR SERVICE. 30 033. I SPEAKING presentations of radio dealers are to be heard. Fortunately Monday night's debate was almost entirely good natured. The chamber became hilarious when Alderman Simpkln asked Alderman Margaret McWllliams if she had ever heard of a housewife having the radio on while preparing meals. The answer expected was "no," but instead Alderman Margaret replied mat all housewives had the radio going at that time.

Is the radio a musical Instrument or a telephone, or something still dinerentT That question also came up. Alderman Bardal supplied a partial answer. For the next couple of weeks he said the radio would be a source of civic information coupled with a good deal of aggravation. Indications are that council will turn down the Hydro's proposal Alderman Five rather courageous ly opposed it, as certain of his friends are not likely to count it unto him for righteousness. Ordinarily the proposal to ex empt buildings or improvements from assessment for a term of years is suspect Many a municipality has headed into disaster In just that way.

But as was pointed out by several speakers the present is npt an ordinary time, and the proposal to exempt improve' ment made under the Dominion housing legislation would bring employment to a class that has been cruelly hit Alderman Bardal was prepared to Furniture DOMINION FURNITURE LTD. 499 NOTRE DAME AVE. However, other members showed they were not pre pared to go further than the present proposal, which is to exempt for Hve years Improvements made under the federal legislation.

The hour's debate over employing a man in the plumbing depart ment brought out some interesting points. Council finally decided that a Mr. S. should have the Job. The present incumbent of the position, appointed recently by the finance committee over Mr.

application, will retire, but every effort will be made to find him another job in the service. Mr. S. Is a war veteran. He went overseas aa a civic employe provided with letter promising him his job back if he were physically able to nil it Mr, S.

was wounded and received a 15 percent pension. On returning he was adjudged unfit to undertake his work with the city, although anxious to do so. He worked up a little business, but was all the time hoping to resume his city Job. Latterly his war Injury has given him less trouble and he claims he is in a position to fill the job. He wants council to honor the piece of paper it gave him when he went overseas council Monday night decided to do so.
