TITE SUN, Monday, September 11, 1978 B8 The right oil can put miles on your car A ttention 'math anxiety' victims: Sheila Tobias savs vou re not inept By Arthur Darack r3 The right oil at the right time will do wonders for your car's engine. The wrong oil, however, will shorten its life. An engine which does not get fresh oil at specified intervals will begin to show signs of premature aging and will require major surgery long before its life expectancy has run its course. What kind of oil should you use? If you are looking for the best oil at the lowest price the answer is easy: Buy Montgomery Ward's 10W-40 on sale at 50 cents Buy right a quart, or as close to that price as you can get. Sears and Penneys used to sell 10W-40 oils at that price, but the oil they now sell for 50 cents is the slightly inferior 10W-30, at least in the Chicago metropolitan area.

It should be noted that Montgomery Ward sometimes sells other quality oils for 50 cents a quart -for example, Mobil Super 10W-40. How do you recognize a quality oil? J. Oils for modern engines require a list Dont push thrown in for men-sufficiently accounts for how much the masculine image of math can intimidate men as well as women. In a way, it can be even worse for boys to have trouble at the early stages of math than it is for girls, for boys lack the comfort of conforming to stereotype, however false and damaging that stereotype may be. And what about the tendency of many people to have trouble because they perceive numbers in reverse order from the way they are actually written? Does dys-lexia-or at least that aspect of it that manifests itself in symbol reversal-lead to problems with math as well as to reading disability? I suppose if one did have this sort of problem, one would learn about it in the normal course of the various therapies the author advocates.

Still, despite an otherwise solid chapter on brain physiology, she never mentions what neurologists sometimes designate "minimal brain dysfunction." Finally, a quibble concerning the production of the book: At a time when proofreading is quickly becoming a lost art, this book sets some sort of record for mislabeled diagrams, botched footnote designations and misprints in -New York Time News Service Md. black history for children "Black Marylanders: A History for Children," has just been published by the Maryland Commission on Afro-American and Culture. Or they may be female, and thus have absorbed the subliminal message conveyed in so many American classrooms that females are inferior because, among other failings, they can't do math, (There are still textbooks extant, Ms. Tobias points out, where the girls used as models in word problems are actually paid less for certain jobs than the boys are for the same work in similar Whatever the source of may "be, there is hope and there are some positive steps one can take, such as joining a matheanxiety workshop (there is a list of available programs in the book's appendix) and retracing the steps through one's original trauma, by means of open discussion and diary-keeping. Sheila Tobias is all encouraging cheeri-ness, even in herTucid descriptive chapter Books on the awesome calculus, and I would guess that if you wanted to start from scratch as a number of people I know are doing, if only to shore up their self-esteemyou could do worse than to begin right here with "Overcoming Math Anxiety." It's never too late, according to the best advice that the author has been able to gather, even mathematical intuition can be cultivated with practice, provided you track down the source of your original trouble.

My only serious quibble is whether or not the author's perceptions are deep enough to get at all the sources of people's troubles. Sheila Tobias is a founding member of the National Organization of Women and the designer of a math clinic at Wesleyan University, where she has apparently had unusual success working with "math-anxious" adults. But I wonder if the feminist slant of her book with occasional grace notes By Christopher Lehmann-Haupt OVERCOMING MATH ANXIETY. By Sheila Tobias. 278 pages.

Illustrated. Norton. $10.95: Birth and death are scary, to be sure. But for those who have experienced what Sheila Tobias calls "Math Anxiety," they seem like nothing compared with the sense of shame and guilt and humiliation that comes over you when the numbers and symbols don't make sense and everyone else around you is ciphering busily away. That's why I grabbed Sheila Tobias's "Overcoming Math Anxiety" as eagerly as I bought my first pocket calculator.

Also, it's a subject I happen to have thought about a lot so much so that long ago I arrived at the conclusion that any human being who has mastered the complexities of language ought to be able to do a relatively simple thing like mathematics. This is reassuring if you think there is something congenitally wrong with you because you cannot do math. But it doesn't offer much in the way of practical help. Sheila Tobias, on the other hand, offers practical help. Herself a sometime victim of number neurosis, she first heightens our anxiety by reminding us that because of "ever-increasing dependence on technology and the ever-increasing democratization of jobs," math has come to matter more in contemporary American life than ever before.

But then she turns to "the causes of math anxiety and attempts to expose them trunk and roots. She assures us that while there may be such a thing as mathematical genius, there is no such thing as inherent mathematical nincompoopery. Some people think they are inept, she argues, because they are confused by the ambiguities of mathematical language. (Children raised on the Biblical notion that to "multiply" means to "increase" have trouble grasping the idea that when you multiply fractions you end up with less.) Or their minds work differently from the way their teach of additives and refinements which are indicated by engineering specifications. Since oil must be detergent for cleaning purposes, the can should say "high detergent" or something similar.

The means winter oil. The numbers mean "vis-' cosity rating" and that refers to thinness and flow. An oil's 10W-40 viscosity rating indicates it will work in virtually any temperature range, from very hot to cold. For extreme temperatures you should use a 5W-40 or 50 oil. The best multi-viscosity oils have another rating called a viscosity index.

Indexes have such numbers as VI of 10 to VI of 300, the latter indicating that the oil changes very little in operation. That is desirable. You don't want oil to thin out too much, otherwise engine wear will rise. If it doesn't thin out enough, the engine won't start in cold weather. You also want an oil that resists carbon formation, won't oxidize and cause varnishing and clogging of engine parts, contains corrosion and rust inhibitors, and can stand up to the extremely high pressures modern engines maintain.

A good oil may not come in a container your luck DAQJ C86. What do you say? Answer Bid seven no trump. You have 22 points, and partner has at least 16. If partner bids two diamonds, denying a major suit of four or more cards, you will bid 3 no trump, suggesting a game at no trump.

Los Angeles Times Syndicate By Alfred Sheinwold A 10W-40 viscosity rating Indicates oil will work in wide temperature range. that spells out all these capabilities with engineer's specifications, but it may say as much in plain English. You would do well to avoid an oil that doesn't list its additives and abilities in some form. Don't buy an oil that is without the designation SE. That vital classification is made by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

It means that an SE oil has passed its tests for service in modern engines and will do all the things we've been listing above but do them better than oils with SC, SD or other classifications. An SE oil is a heavy-duty oil that contains all the requisite specifications to prevent or limit engine wear. Many engine oils meet the requirements above. But there's the matter of price. That's why we start with Montgomery Ward's oil.

Watch the ads for other similarly priced quality oils and read the container to confirm their quality. Then change the oil yourself, along with more than 60 per cent of other car owners. Your total cost for the usual Detroit car will be $2.50, or $1.50 for smaller makes. Add the cost of a new oil filter for $1 to $2 if it's time for that change, which usually is specified at every other oil change. Don't ask for more luck than you really need. East takes two high clubs and then leads a low club. South ruffs with a high trump, saving the deuce as a way of getting to dummy later. West drops the queen of clubs, making it clear that East has all the other missing high cards for his opening bid of one no trump. After ruffing the third club South should lead the jack of spades.

East wins and leads a fourth club. South ruffs again with a high trump and leads the low trump to dummy's 10. Declarer now leads the 10 of spades through East. If East covers, South wins and gets back to dummy with the nine of spades. If East plays low, dummy's 10 of spades wins.

Either way, declarer needs no further spade plays. He can switch to diamonds, winning a finesse with the queen in his own hand. The ace of diamonds then happens to drop the king, and South is safe. The doubleton king of diamonds is the only lucky break South really needs. Question Partner bids one no trump (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes.
