'nrrrrr rrvrrwwrvvrwvi i rr rrrrrrrr r-r-irr rrrrrry-v CI 6 THE HARTFORD COURANTi Twtdoy, Novmbr 27, 1914 'Savage Streets' an Ugly Bit of Exploitation Average Consumer Wants To Have Say match between Heather and the pompon girl. But from beginning to end, it is clear that Steinmann is intent on nothing more than using the talentless, pudgy-faced Blair as the come-oh for a badly crafted exploitation film. The carelessless of "Savage Streets" is visible throughout, despite the occasional artiness of the photography of Stephen L. Posey. From shot to shot, Blair changes hairstyles and even hair colors.

When she goes to the hopital to visit Heather, she has colorness nails one minute and polished talons the next. Apart from Blair, the only "name" associated with this sleazy little picture is John Vernon, who plays a hard-boiled principal with a particularly vulgar vocubulary. His performance is not much more persuasive than Blair's, but tall, sneeringly Satanic Robert Dryer does succeed in making Jake a truly despicable homicidal maniac. Rated this film contains just about every variety of semi-hardcore pornography and violence imaginable. disgusting by its being cross-cut with Brenda's battle with a Valley Girl cheerleader in the girls' shower room.

The rape is staged for the sole purpose of inflaming Brenda to the point where she will stop at nothing in her vendetta against Jake and his scummy chums. And after her rage is further fueled by the murder of a pregnant, soon-to-be married girlfriend, "Savage Streets" becomes Wish" with a sex change. At 25, Blair has become a non-thinking woman's Charles Bronson. Not that most women would have anything to do with "Savage Streets." Although this time we have a young woman performing ritual executions, Blair's new descent into degradation won't be applauded by even man-haters. The film is aimed instead at the titillation of dirty young men and dirty old ones.

At one point, for example, director-writer Danny Steinmann has the camera pan slowly over the shower room, for no motive other than to provide a short skin show in prelude to the gang rape and the rather ineptly staged pushing-and-shoving flashes a bottle of bleach that is going to turn their lives around. I think that group would be -impossible to penetrate as It Is racially and ethnically balanced. Unless you are, say, white, 50 to 60 years old, Catholic, married, own 13 appliances, drive a sedan, vote only in presidential elec- tions, have 16 years of education, have 3 Mi children and use waxed dental floss. I don't stand a chance. But I know I'd fit in well at one of those aspirin seminars.

No one describes a headache any better than I do. I'm very graphic. I had one last week that started in my tail bone and nerve by nerve worked its way up to the base of i my skull and then ripped through the bones and settled like round twirling razor blades behind my eyes. Maybe you have to know someone to sponsor you for the group. I know they don't have any 1 problems getting teenagers to go to seminars on bad skin, but where do they get the people who fight the traffic from work, rush through dinner, change clothes I and drive heaven knows how far to sit around and hear a lecture on i feminine products? Some of them I even take notes and make sketch- -es.

Last night I saw a commercial where a group of women were comparing their rice. I had the feeling they were going to turn rice into a four-year program with a teaching degree. I turned to my husband and you imagine anyone meeting regular-; ly to talk about their rice?" He was asleep. His mouth was i open, and he was snoring. On the other hand Erma Bombeck I have always considered myself an average consumer.

For the fast 35 years 've trudged through supermarkets several times a week looking for bargains, reading labels and thumping fruit. In all that time, you'd think that once I would have been approached to be a part of one of the discussion groups that I see so often on television commercials. I saw one the other night of a group of denture wearers seated around a table while the leader put a heading on the chalkboard: DENTAL PROBLEMS." One by one the denture wearers ticked off some heavy concerns such as slipping and teeth that look dull. They were well-dressed, and I wondered how often they met and where. Did they go out afterward and bob for apples? Did they pay dues? How lonely would you have to be before you joined a denture wearers' discussion group? The laundry stain group always intrigued me.

This commercial shows a group of housewives who stand around and tell a moderator about their toughest stains. "It's blood!" says one of them that I personally wouldn't turn MY back on. "No way," says another surly stain fighter. "It's grease!" Just when the moderator seems to be losing control of the group, he comes forward and By MALCOLM L. In the case of Linda Blair, whose movie career was launched at the age of 14 with the head-spinning monstrousness of "The Exorcist," maturity has brought a killing spree with crossbow, steel arrows and a bear trap. "Savage Streets," the newest" Blair vehicle, casts yesterday's possessed teenager as Brenda, the tough, leather-jacketed big sister of an angelic deaf mute named Heather. As we learn at the start of the film, big Brenda is intensely protective of Little Heather. When the fruit-flavored brandy is being handed around by Brenda's high school gang, big sister hisses: ''Not with Heather around." So, although she's tough, Brenda is ever so gentle. But sometimes she doesn't think about the consequences of her actions.
