According to Nancy Craig, director of marketing for Super TV, the subscription television service that began operation here last month, about 10,000 subscribers have already signed up and had their decoder box installed. Combined with the more than 45,000 subscribers Super TV has secured in Washington, this already makes the combined market the fourth biggest subscription TV operation in the country. Not bad for a business less than a year old. What it proves is that there is lucre, lots of it, in pay television. Miss Craig is not shy about that point.

"This is an extremely profitable business," she says. "You'd know that if you could see my ad budget." Actually you don't have to see it because Miss Craig is happy to talk about it. It runs about 1 million. You can buy a lot of advertising with that kind of money and Super TV has it, which you've noticed if you seen any TV at all lately. Super TV's ads are all over the local stations.

Miss Craig confesses to being mildly surprised that the TV stations show no hestitation about selling time to what amounts to a competitor. "But we're spending so much, it gives us a lot of clout." The clout is going to continue, and will even be stepped up. Things have gone so well in Baltimore so far that Miss Craig says she intends to direct more of her ad money to this end of Super TV's Baltimore-Washington empire. Indeed, the profit margin is such that Super TV seems already to have money to burn, or at least float. On August 23, Super TV is throwing a party at the Inner Harbor just to announce its presence here.

The Port Welcome has been rented and guests will be wined and dined and cruised around the harbor, just to show off Super TV's good will. Obviously those little monthly fees for pay-TV can add up. Let's see: At $20 a head, with 10,000 subscribers, that means Super TV is already mak- Mrs. Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) sets out to adopt a daughter and brings a little hellion named Nancy (Allison Balson) to Walnut Grove, in "Little House on the Prairie" at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Actually it's a lot more than that since there is an additional charge of $5 (this is round numbers: the are actually $19.95 and $4.95) for the package of "adult" films and special features called "Nightlife." Miss Craig said better than 90 percent of the subscribers take Nightlife, which indicates that few Moral Majority types are into pay-TV.

That would put Super TV's Baltimore take at about $250,000 for the first month alone. So far there have been no objections to the material, either. But Super TV didn't expect any, since subscribers pretty much know what kinds of film they're in for when they see titles like "The Stud" and "Young Lady Chatterly." Miss Craig says the only real worry Super TV has is over violent content of films, which accounts for the absence of some movies you might otherwise expect to see on the service. Films with extremely strong scenes of violence won't show up, whether they be of the "Friday the 13th" or the "Dressed to Kill" variety. There are several major films and specials coming up in the future, but Miss Craig said she couldn't announce too many of them yet.

Super TV will play the big Frank Sinatra concert with the Buddy Rich Orchestra, which is being taped August 20 in the Dominican Republic especially for pay-TV. That will be on in November. The August schedule, though it includes four Oriole games (two have been played already) is not exactly loaded with blockbuster films. The major premieres of the month are "Continental Divide" with John Belushi, "Victory" with Sylvester Stallone, "Blow Out" with John Travolta, and "Tarzan" with Bo Derek. LONGEVITY Mrs.
