His body remained unidentified from yesterday afternoon until early today when Melvin H. Simon of Van Nuys, a brother-in-law, said it was that of the novelist. Engstrand's wife, the former Sophia Belzer of Berwyn, 111., herself an author of novels and magazine stories, reported to police yesterday that Engstrand had been missing from their Beverly Hills home since midmoming. She told police that her husband had been in a state of mental depression for several months and had shown suicidal tendencies. Bertram Alan Colbert Bertram Alan Colbert, 53, of 2740 N. Ashland av. died in his sleep yesterday aboard a train nearing Oajaha en route from Los Angeles to Chicago. Mr. Colbert was reservations manager in Chicago for the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio railroad.

He had been with the line nearly 31 years. He was a former northwest, district leader of the Chicago Boy Scouts and had been awarded the Silver Beaver, one of Scouting's highest awards. After attending the DeKalb, 111., Teachers college, he sought material as a writer by going to sea as a common sailor, trapping in northern Wisconsin, and working as a truck farmer. Beginning with "The Invaders," a novel about social and economic problems of American farmers published in 1937, he turned out a novel on an average of one every two years until 1953 when his final work, "The Scattered Seed," was published. Donovan, 83, a retired Chicago school teacher who died Aug. 16, 1954, left an estate valued at $2,752,940, according to an inheritance tax appraisal filed yesterday with County Clerk Edward J. Barrett. Attorneys said Miss Donovan, who had lived at the Edge-water Beach hotel, acquired the fortune chiefly thru inheritance from a sister, and thru some investments. The tax appraisal showed the federal inheritance tax at $915,331 and the state tax at $142,187.
