Ricketson, 29 Timberwood Road Lothar Kahn, professor emeritus at CCSU and Zwelling's friend for 25 years, described him as "a man of enormous intellect and personal integrity." Kahn remembered that Zwelling had marched with other civil rights activists in Selma, during the racial unrest of the 1960s.

"He dared to- say the unpopular. To the end he was brilliantly informed," Kahn said. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Zwelling received a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and went on to the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, where he was or-: dained in 1931. Nicol, By JESSE LEAVENWORTH Courant Correspondent NEW BRITAIN Rabbi Harry Z. Zwelling, described by friends and family as a local spiritual leader, civil rights activist and guiding light to generations of Jewish students at Central Connecticut State University, died Wednesday at home of congestive heart failure. He was 81. He served as rabbi at Temple B'Nai Israel in New Britain for 45 years, from 1936 until his retirement in 1981. Zwelling was also Central Connecticut State University's Jewish chaplain for 30 years and was active in the Jewish Student Union.

DEATH NOTICES PARETTA. Kathryn (Casey) Paretta, 70, of Fort Pierce, Saturday (Aug. 1) in Vero Beach, after a long illness. She was a teacher in the Bristol public school system for more than 20 years, was the widow of John E. Paretta.

Paretta was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University. She worked for several years for the Department of Public Welfare in Hartford and served as a draftsman during World War II. Paretta was born in Port Chester, N.Y., but lived most of her life in Bristol until moving to Florida 15 years. She was the mother of Carol Ann Dahill of Hingham, and Laurel Evans of Baltimore, sister of Marirose Clay of Ellington, Robert Casey of Forestville, Harold Casey of Milford and Gregory Casey of Shrevesport, La. A grandmother of six, Paretta also leaves several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is setat St. Thomas the Apostle Church, West Hartford, at a date and time to be announced. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Britain. Contributions may be made to the New England Home for Little Wanderers or the American Heart Association.

RICK. Alfred J. Rick, 67, of 88 Oak Manchester, died Wednesday (Aug. 5) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia (Cusanelli) Rick.

He was born in Hartford, Dec. 9, 1919, and had been a resident of Manchester the last 16 years. Prior to retiring, he had been employed by the Hartford Framing Co. of East Hartford for over 20 years. He was veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S.

Army Air Corps. He was a parishioner of St. James Church, Manchester. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard J. and Leann Rick of Manchester, Alfred F.

and Paula Rick of Wefhersfield; a brother, Edward Rick of Rockville; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Friday, 8:15 a.m., from the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 E. Center Manchester, with a mass of Christian burial, 9 a.m., in St. James Church. Burial will be in Mount St.

Barbara (Noyes) Ricketson of 29 Timberwood Road, West Hartford, died Tuesday (Aug. 4) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She was born in Hartford, daughter of C. Russell Noyes of Simsbury and the late Corrine (Olson) Noyes, and had lived in West Hartford for 25 years.

She was a graduate of Green Mountain College, Poult-ney, Vt. Besides her father, she leaves her husband, James D. Ricketson of West Hartford; three sons, James D. Ricketson Gregory M. Ricketson and Gerald N.

Ricketson, all of West Hartford; three daughters, Maura A. Ricketson of Hartford, A. Leslie Ricketson of San Francisco, and Barbara S. Ricketson of West Hartford; a brother, Richard K. Noyes of New Haven; and her stepmother, Mrs.

Musetta S. Noyes of Simsbury. The funeral will be Friday, 9:30 a.m., from the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, with a mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., in St. Timothy Church, West Hartford.

Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Friends may call at the funeral home today, 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford.

ROBERTS. Joseph B. Roberts, 74, of Killingworth, died Aug. 3 at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Eleanor (Locher) Roberts.

He was born in Hartford, Nov. 16, 1912, son of the late Joseph B. and Annie (Bradin) Roberts. Mr. Roberts graduated from Hartford College of Law in 1941.

He also graduated from Kent School and from Yale University in 1935. A banker, Mr. Roberts was the senior vice president and vice chairman of the then Union Commerce Bank of Cleveland, Ohio, from which he retired in 1975. Since living in Connecticut, he was a consultant. He served in the South Pacific in P.T.

boats during World War II with the U.S. Navy. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Joseph Bradin Roberts of Michigan; and two daughters. Prudence Fenwick Lindsay of Oregon and Eleanor deClercq Harrison of England. A memorial service will be Friday, 11 a.m., at the Holy Trinity Church, Middletown.

NICOL. Alton "Moon" J. Nicol, 64, of 101 Connecticut East Hartford, beloved husband of Rose (Disipio) Nicol, died suddenly Tuesday (Aug. 4, 1987) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born in Brior Hill, N.Y., and had lived in Enfield for 22 years before moving to East Hartford 12 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed by Nabisco Inc. of Glastonbury, where he had worked for over 40 years. He had coached Little League in Enfield for many years. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John Nicol of Broad Brook and William Nicol of Ellington; a daughter, Roxanne Gelinas of Windsor Locks; a brother. Glen Nicol of East Hartford; two sisters, Eileen (Nicol) Cristelli of Rock-ville and Lorraine (Nicol) Ames of Old Saybrook; three granddaughters; a grandson; many nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be Friday, 12 noon, in the Veterans Memorial Field of Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. David Osowiecki, 19, of 84 Litchfield Thomaston, died Monday (Aug. 3). He was born in Queens, N.Y., Feb. 2, 1968, son fo Gregory Paul Osowiecki Sr. and June (Allen) Osowiecki, and was a 1987 graduate of Thomaston High School.

He was employed by the Henry M. Osowiecki Sons Co. and was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. Besides his mother of Plainville and father of Hawaii, he leaves a brother, Gregory Paul Osowiecki of Plainville; a sister, Aimee Osowiecki of Hawaii; his paternal grandparents, Mr.

and Mrs. Henry M. Osowiecki Sr. of Thomaston; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

John Allen of Plainville; six uncles; seven aunts; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Friday, 9:30 a.m., from the Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Thomaston, to St. Thomas Church for a mass, 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Thomaston.

Frank Karl Primack, 67, of West Hartford, husband of Le-nore (Joseph) Primack died Aug. 3 at his home. He was born Dec.

24, 1919 in Hartford. He attended Hartford area schools and the Yale Conservatory of Music. He remained a student at Yale until he was drafted in February 1942. Mr. Primack was a sergeant with the 8th and 9th U.S.

Army Air Forces in the 322nd Bombardment Group. Working with special services, he organized and directed the Skyliners, a popular band that entertained troops throughout the European theater of operations. This was the first big band to perform at Covent Garden. Mr. Primack's band also traveled with Bob Hope's USO Tour and was featured on the B.B.C.

radio program American Eagle Club. After being discharged in November 1945, he attended the Hartford Institute of Accounting. An accountant for Hartford area firms, he was also the owner and manager of the Frank Ross Men's Shop, Avon from 1964-1969. He was an active pianist for over 40 years and a member of the Hartford Musicians Association Local No. 400.

Besides his wife, Lenore, he is survived by three sons, Bret Primack of Edgewater, N.J., Terry Primack of Cambridge, and Ross Primack of West Hartford; a brother, Morton Primack of Boca Raton, a sister, Mrs. Ann Berman of Novato, a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Elsa Marion Bunyan, 81, of 830 Harding Janesviile, formerly of 16 Foxcroft Road, West Hartford, died Monday (Aug. 3) at Janesviile, Wis. She was born Sept. 29, 1905, in Uti-3 ca, N.Y., daughter of Martin Strong and Edwina (Mein) Strong. She married John Bunyan, October 1936 in New York City.

She had been employed as a executive secretary for Johnson Higgins Brokerage Firm in New York and was also employed by Strasburger Siegel Chemists of Baltimore, Md. She was a member of 16 clubs in Brewster, N.Y. She moved to Janesviile, in May 1986, moving from West Hartford. She is survived by her husband, John of Janesviile, two sons, William of Janesviile, and I John Jr. of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Joan Maclnnis of Me-! dicino, and Margaret Bar- hoff of Orland, a brother, i Edwin Strong of Havre de Grace, a sister, Alice Patterson of i Lake Hill, N.Y.; six grandchildren.

Burrowes, 25, of 57 Blue Hills Hartford, died Monday (Aug. 3) in Hartford. He was born in St. Andrews, Ja- maica. West Indies and lived in Hartford for the past five years.

He is survived by a daughter, Vickesha Burrowes of Hartford; his parents, Hubert and Eileen Burrowes of Bloomfield; two sisters; two brothers; a close friend, Doris Gordon of Hartford; a host of cousins; and many friends. Funeral service will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Henry L. Fuqua Funeral Chapel, 2087 Main Hartford, with burial in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hour is one hour prior to the service.

COLELLO. Constance "Connie" (Caraglior) Colello, 85, of 24 McClintock New Britain, died Wednesday (aug. 5) at New Britain General Hospital after a short illness. She was the widow of John Colello, who died Aug. 21, 1982.

She was born Avelline, Italy, and had been a resident of New Britain for 70 years, moving from Bridgeport where she had lived for 15 years and was educated in the Bridgeport school system. She was owner and operator of Colello's Restaurant on Chestnut Street, New Britain, for 10 years. She was a member of St. Ann's. Church, New Britain.

She is survived by three sons, Louis P. Colello of Wethers-field, Armand J. Colello and Arthur J. Colello, both of New Britain; three daughters, Angelina "Julie" Carlone, Connie Moleski and Louise Greene, all of New Britain; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Dominic Colello, who died in 1969.

Funeral service will be Friday, 8:30 a.m., from the Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 109 North New Britain, with a mass of Chritain burial, 9:30 a.m., in ST. Ann's Church, North Street, New Brit- ain. Burial will be in the family plot of St. Mary's Cemetery, New Britain.

Friends and relatives may call today, 6-9 p.m. GENDLER. Israel Gendler, 80, husband of the late Olga (Goldfarb) Gendler of Lebanon Avenue, Colchester, died Wednesday (Aug. 5) at Hartford Hospital. He was a member of Congregation Ahavath Achim.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Maria) Balaban of Colchester and Mrs. Albert (Marcia) Daversa of Nian-tic; a brother, Jacob Gendler of Miami, a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Ferdas of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Mark and Jodi Balaban and Michael, Paul, Steve and Peter Daversa. Funeral service will be Friday, 10 a.m., at the Congregation Ahavath Achim, Lebanon Avenue, Colchester.

Burial will be in the Colchester Jewish Aid Cemetery. A memorial period will be observed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Balaban, Buckley Hill Road, Colchester. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Congregation Ahavath Achim, P.O. Box 5, Colchester 06415.

Wein-stein Mortuary, has charge of ar rangements. KUCZYNSKYJ. Paraska (Kostylka) i Kuczynskyj, 69, of 121 Wyllys Hartford, widow of Pantelejmon Kuczynskyj, died Tuesday (July 28) at her home. Born in Ukraine, she had lived in New York City, moving to Hartford 27 years ago. Before retiring, she was employed at the Connecticut General Life Insurance Bloomfield.

She leaves a brother in New York; and several sisters in Europe. The funeral will be Friday, 10 a.m., at the South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wefhersfield Hartford, with the Rev. Basiel Zawierucha officiating. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday prior to the service, 9-10 a.m. DEATH NOTICES KORNER. Frederick Korner, 84, of Richmond Road, Coventry, died Wednesday (Aug. 5) at his home. Born Feb.

25, 1903 in Terrytown, N.Y., he was a longtime resident of Coventry and worked for UCONN 42 years, retiring in 1965. He is survived by his wife, Florence (Brown) Korner of Coventry; five sons, Russell B. Korner of Coventry, Harold C. Korner and Ronald C. Korner, both of West Willington, Sidney R.

Korner of Hartford and Raymond K. Korner of Haddam; three daughters, Pris-cilla M. Korner of East Hartford, Shirley J. Zemek of Mansfield and Janet K. Boudreau of Ellington; a brother, Harold Korner of Coventry; two sisters, May Riquier of Willimantic and Rhoda Seering in New Jersey; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lapins, 67, of Fort Lauderdale, formerly of Farmington and Vernon, died Tuesday (Aug. 4) at the Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, after a short illness. He was the husband of Astra (Peterson) Lapins. He was born Sept. 17, 1919 in Latvia and had been a resident of Florida for the past two and a half years.

Prior to retiring, he was a vice-president of the Morland Tool which he help found in the early 1950's. He was also a founding partner and manager of the La Crepe Restaurant, Hartford Civic Center, since 1976. He was a former member of the American Latvian Lutheran Church, Manchester. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, George J. Lapins of Hartford and Gerald J.

Lapins of Agawam, and five grandchildren. Funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 8, 5 p.m., at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 E. Center Manchester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours are Saturday, 4 p.m., until the time of service. Memorial donations may be made to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. NIELSEN. Carl Christian Nielsen, 77, husband of Dorothy (Hitchcock) Nielsen of Bloomfield, died Tuesday (Aug. 4) at a local convalescent home.

Born in Bloomfield, he was a lifelong resident. He, with his brothers, owned and operated the Chris Nielsen Sons Dairy Farm for over 50 years. He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church, Bloomfield and the Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 98, Bloomfield. Besides his wife, he is survived two daughters, Mrs.

Robert (Gayle Peterson of Middle-town and Mrs. Warren (Linda Kindig of Wayne, Maine; four brothers, Clyde W. Nielsen and Earl H. Nielsen, both of Bloomfield, Leslie Nielsen of Unionville and Emil H. Nielsen of Hollywood, a sister, Mrs.

Anna Bradfield of Berlin, six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 7, 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church, Bloomfield, with the Rev. Roscoe F. Metzger, officiating.

NOLAN. Leopold M. Nolan, 67, of 414 Rainbow Road, Windsor, died Tuesday (Aug. 4) at Hartford Hospital. Born in East Fairfield, he had lived in Windsor for 31 years.

He had been employed by the Nicholson Bros. Tobacco Farm, East Granby, for many years and retired in 1983 after 15 years with the Simsbury Highway Department. He was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club. He leaves his wife, Edith (Cavana) Nolan; three sons, Larry A. Nolan of Windsor Locks, Phillip R.

Nolan of Windsor and Donald L. Nolan; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Heeber of Windsor; two brothers, Edward Nolan of North Granby and Ronald Nolan of Uni Delia, N.Y.; three sisters, Florence Nolan of West Suffield, Ethel Hull of Windsor Locks and Leola Gonyeau of St. Albans, and 11 grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday, 9:15 a.m., from the Carmon-Poquon-ock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquon-ock Poquonock, with a mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., in St.

DEATH NOTICES INTO. Rachel (Tiffany) Into, 86, of Lyme, died Saturday (Aug. 1) at Pettipaug Manor, Essex. She was the widow of Edwin Grover Into. She was born Jan.

29, 1901, at Tiffany Farms, Lyme, daughter of the late John and Dora Jewett) Tiffany. She was a graduate of Connecticut College for Women, class of 1923. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Lee Erwin Rhodes of Lyme; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Gardiner Spencer.

A memorial service will be Thursday (Aug. 20), 4 p.m., for both Rachel and Edwin Grover Into at the Old Lyme Congregational Church, Lyme Street, Old Lyme, with the Rev. David Good officiating. Contributions may be made, in her memory, to Middlesex Memorial Hospital Weiss Hospice Unit, co MMH Development Fund, 55 Crescent Middletown 06457. JOHNSON. Erwin A. "Squire" Johnson, 70, of 1531 Hyel-Lyn Place, Bellingham, died July 22 in Bellingham, Wash. Born March 1, 1917, in Middletown, Mr. Johnson had moved to Bellingham, with his wife, llsa G.

Johnson, in 1978. Mr. Johnson had been the co-owner of the Old Saybrook Motor Hotel and also worked in the travel agency business and in real estate. He was a member of Trinty-Mount Olive Lodge No. 43 in Deep River.

Survivors include his wife, llsa; three daughters, Diane Godfrey of Meriden, Kris-ten Brighenti of Canton and Lisa Piroek of West Suff ield; a brother, Robert F. Johnson of Deep River; a sister, Lucille Buddington of Vista, four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Bradford Johnson, formerly of Old Say-brook. A memorial service will held at a late date in Deep River. The Jones Funeral Home, Bellingham, had charge of cremation arrangements.

KOZIOL. Barbara (Malek) Koziol, 94, formerly of 32 Durant Manchester, died Wednesday (Aug. 5) at a local convalescent home. She was the widow of Wojciech Malek. She was born in Poland and lived in this country for many years.

She was a member of St. John's Polish National Church. She is survived by two sons, Joseph S. Malek of Natick, Mass. and Emil Malek of Columbia; three daughters, Mrs.

Natalie Liska of Wethers-field, Mrs. Josephine Ellis of Manchester and Mrs. Lillian Slusarz of South Windsor; and 15 grandchildren. Funeral service will be Saturday, at a time to be announced from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W.

Mrs. Lagana was born Jan. 27, 1908 in Middletown, daughter of the late Sebastian and Sebastiana Passinese and was resident of Middletown all her life. She was a member of St. Sebastian Church; the Sacred Heart Society of the church; the Sons of Italy Auxiliary; and the Garibaldi Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Mary Ann) Smith of Durham and Mrs. Sebastian (Lorraine) Carta Jr. of Hopewell, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph Passinese and Salvatore Passinese, both of Middletown; a sister, Mrs. Josephine Russo of Middletown; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Salvatore Lagana and two brothers, Angelo and Mariano "Larry" Passinese. Funeral service will be Saturday, 8 a.m., from the D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 S. Main Middletown and 9 a.m., at St. Sebastian Church for a mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in the family plot in St.

WILLICKA. Maria A. Willicka, 86, formerly of 407 West Southing-ton, died Tuesday (Aug. 4). She was the widow of Blazey Willicka.

She was born in Czechoslovakia March 12, 1901 and lived in Southington for the past 60 years. She was a member of St. Thomas Church and former member of the Slovak Wreath Society. She is survived by a son, Joseph J. Willicka of Southington; a daughter, Mrs.

Joseph (Mary Ann) Sollack of Southington; two brothers and two sisters in Czechoslovakia; 10 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lillian Ann Piteo.
