SMYKAL RITES ARE HELD IN WHEATON Funeral services, with military honors, were conducted yesterday for Lt. Gen. Richard Smykal former commander of the Illinois National Guard and Chicago's first community conservation board chairman. Services were held in the First Presbyterian church, Wheaton, with burial in Whea-ton cemetery. Gen.

Smykal, 57, a private home builder, died Friday of a heart ailment in Presbyterian-St Lukes hospital. He resided in Wheaton at 1010 E. Illinois st. Surviving are his widow, Helen; a daughter, Susan; and a son, Ralph. He was a World War II combat veteran and commanded the guard for three years until retiring in 1951.

DIES IN TRYING TO SAVE FARM WORKER IN SILO Donald C. Richards, 33, manager of the Knowland farms, Kaneville township road, near Elburn, Kane county, was asphyxiated yesterday while trying to rescue a fellow worker, Charles Ste phens, 26, in the bottom of a silo on the farm. Elburn firemen wearing masks found both men in the silo and took Stephens to St. Joseph's hospital, Aurora, where he is recovering. They said Richards apparently died of fumes and lack of oxygen.

Richards had climbed down a ladder inside the silo to rescue Stephens when the lat ter failed to respond to his shouts, said Robert Ley, at torney for the owners of the farm.
