Wideners Carla renewed their sprint duel in the Edgewater Beach purse, a six furlong event which headed yesterday's program at Lincoln Fields. In their previous meeting Carla had won by a neck.

Yesterday, however, the betters decided it was Unerrings turn and backed this filly down to 2 to 1. They also took a fancy to R. W. Mcllvain's Olney and decided he was worthy of being the 3 to 1 second choice with Carla third at 4 to 1. The betters proved themselves master handicappers.

That was just the way the race turned out. Through a furious downpour that made the horses look like shadows, Unerring raced to victory, emerging from a curtain of rain more than a length in advance of Olney, with Carla a length and a half farther back. One More for B. Jones. Unerring's performance added to the laurels of Trainer Ben Jones, who previously in the meeting had won with Beau Insco, Sherron Ann, Chance Star, Finella, and Ogallah, besides earning a number of seconds and thirds for Woolford farm.

Mike Caff arella, who rode Unerring, kept his mount well up from the start. As they got the bell, the Milky Way farm's No Competition went out fast, with Olney close beside him. Olney went wide before straightening out for the run home, but held on well under vigorous riding, keeping a safe distance ahead of Carla, which came from quite a way back. Another for Womeldorf. Unerring covered the six furlongs in and paid 6.40, 54.00, and 52.60. Trainer Red Womeldorf saddled the sixth winner of the meeting for Jacobsen and Hough when he sent Little Tramp to the post in the fourth race. With Ernest Hanke aboard, this 4 year old colt came home two lengths ahead of Mrs.

E. Dale's Labor Day. Womeldorf had won with Little Tramp earlier in the meeting and had also saddled Scout Azure and Banola for two successful efforts each. Hanke continued to draw away from Warren Yarberry in the struggle for jockey honors. He had taken a 27 to 26 lead on Saturday when Yarberry was shut out completely.

Hanke's ride on Star Bud gave that horse's backers a particular thrill. Through the earlier part of the mile and a sixteenth race Hanke rated his mount along under a snug hold within striking distance of the pace setters, and when they reached the stretch he brought him right down the middle, wore down Miss Bonnie and Pundit, and drew out in the last sixteenth. 111 It.
