When Fischer played Boris Spassky in 1972, journalists were outraged at the decision of the Icelandic Chess Federation to sell the rights for move-by-move TV coverage. But gradually there was acceptance of the principle that chess moves could be sold. In the United States, successful TV chess coverage by New York's Channel 13 was carried by only a handful of PBS stations in the Northeast until IBM intervened as a sponsor and paid for the wider broadcast rights needed for the show to go national.

Spectators, buying tickets to the recent six-game semi-rapids match in London between World Champion Garry Kasparov and the English prodigy Nigel Short found a printed warning on their stubs against publishing the games before they were broadcast on a delayed basis by Thames TV. Karpov was right. Chess life clearly is more complex. Below are the moves of a Short victory over Jan Timman of Holland from the recent international tournament in Reykjavik. 0ntC Of ttW MrtfMHS 1944 III ISSS SSiS A Ss5f sss- .11.

The stamps highlight the achievements of famous pilots who participated in combat missions against the Japanese over the Marshalls during World Warll. John Glenn, who figured prominently in Tom Wolfe's best-selling book "The Right Stuff," is now a U.S. senator from Ohio. Also honored is aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, the first to cross the Atlantic solo, in 1927. Lindbergh also flew a Navy Corsair during the Battle of the Marshalls in 1944. William Bridgeman, a Navy pilot in the Battle of Kwajalein, later set records as a test pilot in the Douglas Skyrocket, conducting research in the early 1950s that led to later space achievements.

Palau, also a part of the United States Trust Territory of the Pacific, released a set of 12 definitive, or regular issue, stamps March 12. The stamps depict flowers native to the island. The set replaces the original marine life stamps that were issued in 1983 QR QN QB 0 KB KN KR Short WHITE TO PLAY when the Micronesian territory gained its postal independence from the United States. Palau also issued a block of four stamps in February with various views of a native fruit bat. Often called the flying fox, the bat, which lives mostly on fruit, is the largest native mammal on the island.

USS Seawolf The USS Seawolf, the Navy's second nuclear-powered submarine, will be decommissioned Monday in ceremonies at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. In 1958 the Seawolf set an endurance record by remaining submerged for 60 days. A part of the Pacific fleet since 1970, the ship has provided much useful information to the Navy on the operation of nuclear submarines. The USS Saginaw Chapter of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society will issue a commemorative cover honoring the ship's decommissioning. The cover will bear a pictorial postmark for the occasion.

The covers are $1 each from the Saginaw Chapter, 213 Mountain Vista Lane, Santa Rosa, Calif. 95605. Enclose a business-size stamped return envelope with orders. Notice how important it was for declarer to lead his low trump at trick two. Had he carelessly led a high trump, East could have set up a trump trick by ruffing every time a club was led from dummy. At the end he would be left with the heart seven while South held the deuce.

Here declarer intended scoring seven trump tricks, so he needed only six side-suit winners. The obvious danger was that three rounds of diamonds would not live.

Declarer side-stepped that pitfall with careful play. He led a diamond to the ace, and when East followed, all was well. The ace-king of clubs were cashed, then the ace-king of spades. On the second spade declarer discarded the board's last diamond. It was nounced possession of all the aces and invited a grand slam by bidding five no trump, North thought his singleton, two kings and good trumps merited contracting for all the tricks.

West led his fourth-best diamond and it appeared that two spade ruffs in dummy would be all that was needed to bring in 13 tricks. After winning the first trick in hand, everything changed when declarer led a low trump to the nine and West showed out. East's fifth trump was likely to prove bothersome.
