EVENING SUN TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1986 C5 i i 1 Conti finds a dream to Altman work for Homecoming Night' is horror and humor; Bandits' is just pretty tMf 0 I Tom Conti, who's appearing in the current film, "The Gospel According to Vic," has just finished a film with Robert Altman, based on the play of the same name, "Beyond Therapy." Altman, who did "Nashville," the original (and unsurpassed) "M-A-S-H" and "Popeye," is known for his improvisational tolerance. Altman was paradise to work for, Conti says. Conti has co-starred in several features including "American Dreamer," "Reuben, Reuben" and the upcoming "Miracles." It's not always a blissful experience, he says. "Altman is only the second director I've ever worked with who was not afraid of film," Conti says. "Most of them, you know, don't know what they're doing." Conti says when they first began, Altman told the cast, Scott McGinnis, left, and Jeff Osterhage are the "Sky I'm noi iust learnin about literature.

I'm "Don't worry, we have plenty time, we have five weeks." "I thought that wasn't enough, but he got it done in five weeks. He was organized only up to a point. He' had an idea how he wanted it to goT sometimes, but he's very like to work with courageous people who understand what life is. When you do something that's slightly out of the ordinary, he recognizes that it' is, in fact, not out of the ordinary as" far as life is concerned," Conti says.1 "Other directors might say, 'WhyJ are you doing They don't rec-" ognize it as part of human behavior." The other director Conti admires' is Nagisa Oshima who directed him'! and David Bowie in the highly under- rated "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" three years ago.

Of course, you have to take the bad along with the good, this one has its share of exploding Heads and slime, but the dialogue is bright, and the plot has been nicely developed.

L. We also have the cliche ending. They apparently don't make horror films without it, but there is much that is novel about this movie, keeping in mind that it is still a horror film. Fred Dekker wrote and directed. He is 26.

He was apparently raised on horror films. One of his favorites was "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Scenes from that classic are seen on a TV screen within the film, and one ot the actors in that film appears in the Dekker movie, looking little older than he did. Jason Lively and Steve Marshall are the nerds who want to join a fraternity. They are told they will have good news is that your dates are here. The bad news is that they are dead From 'Homecoming Night' to do something first, like bring the qther boys a corpse.

They try. They sneak into the science lab where the body of a young man who had died 27 years before has been preserved. The body is not all that dead. In fact, it comes to life, and from there on, slugs, looking like mice on ice, skate across the screen at great speed. The chief of detectives believes the boys when they tell him that alien creatures are using humans as incubators.

The man is gruff, but he also has a sense of humor. When the frat boys are heading for the sorority house, the detective, waiting inside the house, tells the girls he has good news and bad. "The good news is that your dates are here. The bad news is that they are dead," he says. Earlier, he suggests that others in the film are behaving like characters in "a bad movie." Not so.

Beyond the gore (and it is most important to keep this in mind), this is a rather funny film. NOW PLAYING EXCLUSIVELY AT: COLUMBIA CITY Wincopm Cr Columbu 997-9010 I Kb GREENSPRING 2853 Smith Ave "There is an intimacy and an energy here that I found missing in other schools. In the Honors a Program, concepts and ideas are discussed in a small seminar setting. There's a constant challenge to support your statements and to explore uncharted territory subjects that range from philosophy andpolitics to media and creative writing." "It's an excellent liberal arts education with every offers the region's only specialized mm THE LOWEST da SUPER Bausch Lomb course available at rught so I can work while I'm learning." The University of Baltimore Lou Cedrone "Cry From the Mountain" is a little more church than it is film. Done by World Wide Pictures, a Billy Graham subsidiary, it is traditional in part, sermon in others.

It begins as any other film might. A woman and her husband are on the verge of divorce. He has been seeing another woman. The affair is ended, but the wife cannot forgive her husband. While she tries to make up her mind what to do, he takes their son on a camping trip.

The boy and his father are riding the rapids when the canoe overturns and the father is injured. He regains consciousness, then loses it again. His wife, still wondering what to do, goes to a Billy Graham meeting, takes from it and makes her decision. She will return to her husband, which she does, while he is still unconscious. The traditional clinch is omitted.

The woman simply stands at the door to the hospital room, tells her unconscious husband that she has made up her mind, and the camera switches to Graham, who addresses the audience. He tells the viewers that the woman has found her way, and that they, members of the audience, may do the same. "When the lights go on, there will be someone standing in the front of the theater. He will have booklets," he says. With this, the camera moved to a cloud formation.

At the same time, a young man in front of the theater turned on a light above a small table. With this, the film ended, the house lights went on, and some members of the audience moved to the front of the theater where they knelt on the floor. Others simply got up and left. The only recognizable performer in the film is Coleen Gray, who, when she was younger, did films with Victor Mature and John Wayne. "Cry From the Mountain" will continue playing at the Hillendale, Westview and Jumpers theaters through Thursday.

The figure given by the producers is $18 million, and there is no reason to question it. Zoran Perisic, who did the visual effects for "Superman," directed, and David Watkin of did the photography, and while their film looks good, while the photography is beautifully clear, the movie has little else going for it. Scott McGinnis and Jeff Osterhage are the lead actors.

They play bank robbers who are caught in the act and are given a choice, jail or Army duty in World War I. They chose the Army and join the allies in France where they take a giant German dirigible out of action. The special effects are excellent. One of the flying machines looks like a car with wings. Another looks like a flying Venetian blind.

All this comes to little, however. The movie, which was obviously made with "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in mind, never engages the spectator. Small children may be amused, but adults will find the film no more than visually interesting. Filmed on locations in England and Spain, it is showing at local theaters. "G'DAY BALTIMORE" "A Charming good time movie that's impossible to resist -a Knee-slapper of a movie "A big hang-ton, head-rush romp of a aood time mv.
