Harris, Robards make 'Christmas Wife' shine Toward the midpoint of "The Christmas Wife," tonight's HBO Showcase presentation on the premium cable channel, a reticent Julie Harris asks Jason Robards, "What is going on?" and he re-; nothing at all." Ah, but something very nice is going on: an original, understat- ed little drama that has the intimate feel of a stage play impecca-' bly acted by two premier performers of this or any other genera' tion. (It plays at 8 tonight, with future plays Dec. 15, 18, 21 and In a season of schmaltz," the script by Katherine Ann Jones from a short story by Helen Norris is tastefully restrained, yet I manages to portray the bittersweet tug of memories generated by the holiday period, as well as the inexorable progress of life. Robards is a retired architect and widower facing his first Christmas after the death of his wife.

THE RATINGS WARS One inescapable conclusion of the just concluded "sweeps month" ratings war on TV is that most new shows of this fall's strike-delayed season have not found big audiences. Nielsen figures for the last week of November, for example, as reported in Electronic Media magazine, show only two newcomers in the top 20 shows: in fourth place, NBC's "Empty Nest" on Saturday (which aired behind the week's number one show, "Golden and in fifth place ABC's "Roseanne" on Tuesday. And only two more made the top 40: NBC's "Dear John," ranked number 22 on Thursday (behind number 14 and CBS' "Murphy Brown," number 39 on Monday.

By Steve McKerrow Evening Sun Staff Independent television station WNUV-Channel 54, which began service almost three years ago as an aggressive competitor to WBFF-Channel 45, has been sold to a group of Boston investors. Sam Kravetz, the principal figure in New Vision the current station owner, said today the station will change hands, probably in March, under a sales agreement pending the usual long approval process by the Federal Communications Commission. He said the sale price was "in the low $20s millions range." But he expects the new owners, whose principals are identified as businessmen Andrew Banks and Royce Yudkoff of Boston, will retain the station's format and employees.

Saturday's Times puzzle answer TONIGHT 8 TO 11PM meant the worst. In a production that paid admirable attention to details such as ration coupons and appropriate toys and cars and clothes and buses, there are some stupid mistakes. For instance, why go to all that trouble and then have the men wear their hair in late 1980s cuts? Then there's a phone call that takes 10 seconds, but a minute's worth of information is exchanged when the conversation is related. And a telegram that comes out of the machine in one sentence, but also managed to contain a couple of paragraphs worth of facts. These aren't fatal flaws, but they are bothersome in such a carefully made film.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" is far from a great movie. But if you're in the mood for a rather classy cry with seasonal evocations, it's a good way to spend your evening. Saturdcrs Sun puzzle answer Classic, 8:00 pm A TRIBUTE TO WOODY GUTHRIE LEADBELLY HILL, From Dl Davey, sits at home and dreams of the glory of war. A daughter, Leah, played by Nancy Travis (whom you'll recognize as one of the people in those pain killer commercials who had "a headache this works at a steel plant in a nearby town and hasn't gotten over the loss of her boyfriend in the war. There are the standard number of plot lines involving every one of the people on their way home for the holiday.

Leah's bus runs off the icy road and she hikes for help with a career soldier, played by Gallagher, and what we would now call a relationship ensues. In an awkwardly handled subplot, Terrel always thought Dad liked Mike best and thus icicles grow on their frosty reunion. Can they be melted in front of the Yuletide log? And, as the family eagerly awaits Mike's safe return, his baby picks the most predictable and symbolic possible time to be born. At its best, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is able to evoke what the holidays must have been like in a small town during the war, the memories of the season stirring up contradictory feelings of closeness and distance, of love and ache, as the massive conflict dominated everyone's life. Hovering always in the background was the friendly neighbor called upon to be the messenger of death, the local Western Union man, played by Charles Tyner, whose knock on the door usually Distinctive Fashions Accessories Misses Petites Sizes 4-18 GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE IAiA.ilMAJJG Jllf.0 in Hi I JF A GJn A JMlO 1L 0 EM 1 Bllp- 0 I Ins "Tl Td a JOHN RJO A DjR EL ILED ATlH A fCR ABUT EMS I ST" Pf ESAl Tm 7 Srita Fashions See Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Emmy-lou Harris, Little Richard, john Cougar Mellen-camp and U2 in a salute to two folk legends.
