53 Beatty Bros. Celebrate Their Diamond Jubilee in 1934 THE WINNIPEG EVENING TRIBUNE. SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1934 Founded in 1874, in Fergus, Ontario, Beatty Now Serves All the World From the Modest Plant of George and Matthew Beatty, the Firm Has Become a Gigantic Organization, Selling Canadian Goods in 44 Countries. Beatty and his brother Matthew eitabllehed in Feme. Ont. the firm of Beatty Broa. The Beatty boyi were raieed on a farm in Albion Townahlp, gome SO mile outalde Toronto. George left home at the age of 18, and learned the trade of machinist with a farm Implement manufacturer in Brampton.

A man of infinite resource and invention, he made changei and improvements in every article he handled. Matthew Beatty waa the sales staff. The Canadian which later absorbed such Immense quantities of implements, was not yet opened up. The field was the province ot Ontario, and Matthew covered It from end to ena. uunerin, Wellington, Bruce ana the surrounding counties were his principal territory, but he also Roads were poor and railroads few and far between.

The era of modern transportation, shortly to transform business as wen as 'everyday life, was aa yet scarcely dreamed of. Almost every little towu had its own Implement com pany, supplying its own restricted neighborhood with farm lmple menu. In Fergus itself three such firms were In business. Salesmen, with team and wagon, ploughed their laborious way from farm to farm to canvass for sales. Beatty Bros, followed the same plan there was no other.

But as transportation gradually opened up and ex ended, the small firms needed good management and forethought In order to survive. Many went out of business. Some, of which Beatty Brcs. wjs one, Improved their sales methods to keep pace with newer editions. These not only survived, but prospered.

New Factory Established The first Beatty factory was a two storey building with only 3,500 square feet of floor space. Today the plants ot the firm cover more than 10 acres of ground. In 1879 a new factory was built on the Qraivd River. After S3 years this plant is still in use for woodworking, Fop many years the Grand River plant was sufficient for the com PRESIDENT )v' W. O.

BEATTY When William George Beatty graduated from Toronto University In 1901 he Immediately Joined his father in the firm, and took charge of plant and production. Today be Is president of the pany's needs. In 1911 work was begun on the Hill et, plant, where the head office la now located. The first section built, 80 feet by 320 feet. Is now used for offices, convention rooms, dining room, and for the development of new goods.

In the following year the firm was Incorporated as a limited company, and became Beatty Ltd. During the same year, 1912, Beatty Bros, purchaaed Wortman 1 FOUNDER GEORGE BEATTT George Beatty, founder of the firm, was a patternmaker and machinist He became an inven tor, and designed a reaper which won the Gold Medal at Toronto Exhibition. All the firm's early patents were, due to hi. inventive genius. and Ward of London.

Ont. with the extensive factories operated by that company. Important Additions Made Construction of a large foundry at Chelsea Green, London, and the building of an addition of 32.256 square feet to the Hill et plant, were Important advances in 117, The Fergus plant went ahead again in 1920 when 65,664 feet were added. Shortly afterwards began a period when the constantly mounting volume of ordera resulted In annual additions to the working space In the plant The tremendous growth of these years is shown by the size of the additions: 1925, 51,809 square feet: 1926. 35.812 sauare feet: l27, 20.736 square feet; 1928, 71,524 square feet; 1929, 89,108 square feet, Throughout the years of deprei slon, manufacturing was continued In all departments.

It remained for the diamond Jubilee year of 1934, however, to see the next factory addition. An addition of 13.824 square feet is now under construc tion; Bestty Patents While the name of Beatty Is probably better known to the average city resident througa Beatty Elec tric washers than tnrouga any other product the washer is only one of a long list of Beatty products that are handled by the world wide organisation. W. O. Beatty graduated in Practical Science at Toronto University before Joining the firm.

Throughout 60 years, from the time of George and Matthew Beatty, a high standard of efficiency has been insisted on the plants of Beatty Bros, me outstanding service and the satisfac tion that came as a natural result are the reasons for the widespread ale of the firm's products. Government figures snow thst the number of washers produced in the Beatty plants at' Fergus is eight times greater than the total of all washers Imported into Canada. Statistics gathered by the company itself show more Beatty washers sold in Camda than all other makes combined, and nearly twice aa many aa are sold by the I Sales Manager MATTHEW BEATTY When the business was established, Matthew, brother of George Beatty, took charge of sales. He canvassed from farm to tarrn with team and wagon and built up a large Implement bus'ness. 25 American companies whose washers are Imported Into Cruada.

More than 500,000 women are using Beatty appliances: In 1874 the distribution of Beatty products Was by wagon over many miles of country roads. Then came distribution by rail and truck, and later still by steam and motor ship. Since 1874 the Beatty business has grown until today the firm op SECRETARY i M. J. He was the office man, responsible for selling, collections and finances, and eventually became secretary of the company. eratea a foundry at London, Ont, and two factories at Fergus, covering 10 seres of floor space and their own distributing warehouses at Fergus, Saint John, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, and London, England. Beatty products have carried the name of Canada to all corners of the world. In England, headquarters are maintained ki London and distributing depots or dealer or ar established at Wll esden, Tottenham, Catford. Ilford, Strea.ham, Manchester, Newcastle, and, In Scotland, at Glasgow.

Wellington New Zealand, has a permanent branch, with stores at Wellington, Auckland, Dunedln and Christchurch. The complete list ot countries where Beatty goods are sold reads like a membership roll of the League of Nations. It includes: Angola, Argentine Australia, Bar badoes, Belgium, Erltish Guiana, China, Denmark, Dominica Island, Kenya, Tangan, Portuguese E. Africa, Palestine, France, Finland, Ireland (Northern), Irish Free State. Scotland.

Wales, Greenland, Holland, India, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Madagascar, Mexico. Columbia, 8. Nyassaland, Norway, 'Newfoundland, Rhodesia, Roumania, South Africa, Tobago, Trinidad, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Mesopotamia, United States of America, Union of 8. 8. Republic, Greece, Turkey, Germany.

There are more than BO branches all told, and thousands of Beatty dealers. In February. 1928. Beatty Ltd, despatched the largeat train load of hardware ever sent to the Canadian Weet by any manufacturer.

This record was broken two years later, in May, 1930. when two solid train, left Fergus togetner. The 42 cars carried 4,000 Beatty washers and 4,000 sets of washday accessories, valued at more than three quarters of a million dollars. G. and M. j. Beatty have tne interests of the community at heart, and take a keen Interest in the civic. religious and athletic activities of the town.

Situated on Grand river, 13 miles north west of Gueloh. and served by both Canadian Paclflo and Canadian National railways, Fergus is a orosporous Ontario town. Beatty Athletics When the two factors of a public spirited management and a large and contented force of employes are combined, one of the results to be expected is that employes will take an active part in sports. This is certainly the case in Fergus. Cricket is a popu ar sport In Ontario as well as In Winnipeg, and the Fergus cricket team, made up largely of Beatty employes, has made a good record for itself. Beatty emp'oys approximately 2.000 people. The total ceeds two million Matthew Beatty died In. 1886. and George Beatty carried on the business alone until his sons graduated from Toronto University in 1901 and entered the business. George Beatty died in 1912.

When the sons came Into the firm, William George Beatty, graduate in practical science. i took charge of plant and production of goods. He Is now president Milton James Beatty, now secretary of the company, graduated in an honor course at Victoria college, winning the gold medal In political economy. His work In financing, selling, and collecting, lied naturally to the secretary caair. All but one of the directors the firm are actively engaged In one branch or another of the business.

J. Beatty, sons of George Beatty are president and secretary, respectively, and the plant now has a total floor space in excess of ten acres.
