4 CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE. RICHARD ORR Wed ne day, Augnit 9, 1950 Parti Pase 21 WIFE, HUSBAND JUST BE PATIENT ON DUTY ORDERS, RESERVES URGED Store Hours, 9:15 to 5:45 Closed Saturday Aug. 8, 1930 REQUEST POLICE TO FIND MATES Police were asked yesterday to look for Mrs. Helen Livings, 34, of 3753 S. Wood and Thomas Eustice, 48, of 3728 S.

Hermitage who disappeared last Saturday and are believed to be together. Lucian Livings, 35, and Mrs. Schedule Still to Emily Eustice, 35, reported the sprouts become too long, in which case they may break easily in planting. Better Storage Method A better method Is to store the nuts in a cool, fairly humid room where the temperature can be maintained at about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Under these conditions they can be kept in small boxes without sand, or they can be spread out on shelves.

Early April is usually a good time to plant horse chestnuts in the Chicago area. Depth of planting should be about two to three times the diameter of the seed. The nuts should be planted in a prepared seedbed in preference to sod. Seedlings can be transplanted safely at the end of the second growing season, at which time they should be 2 to 3 feet high. After they are in their permanent location the seedlings should be watered and mulched with a layer of well decayed manure 3 to 4 inches thick.

The mulch vrfll help keep the weeds down so these pests won't compete with the seedlings for moisture and soil nutrients. disappearance of their mates. The families have been close friends for four years. Mrs. Eustice said her husband, a construction worker, and Mrs.

Livings' walked out of the Eustice home together Saturday. Mrs. Eustice said she thought her hus-ban was going to take Mrs. Livings for an auto ride or to her home and thought nothing more of the incident until they failed to return heme. The Livings have a daughter, Evelyn, 1L The Eustices have no children.

Mrs. Livings is 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 90 pounds; Eustice is 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 200 pounds, police were told. FOR SOME undetermined reason the farm has been having difficulties getting some of the planted horse chestnuts to sprout. As ornamental shade trees, the horse chestnuts which put on such a great springtime display of their snowy white flowers, are regarded as among the most attractive on the farm. Many of them have been planted in recent years along the drives and elsewhere.

Each fall the smooth, shining nuts that are dropped in pods from the mature trees are gathered for planting. The gardener sets aside a patch of ground in which these horse chestnuts are planted. Later those that produce seedlings and seem to be thriving are transplanted to permanent locations. Spring Planting Preferable The nuts can be planted either in the fall after they are gathered or the ensuing spring. Noel B.

Wysong, forester of the Cook county forest preserve district, says experience at the forest preserve nursery has shown it is preferable to hold the nuts over the winter and plant them in the spring. If planted in the fall there is always the danger, especially in a late fall, that with unusually warm weather and plenty of moisture the seed may sprout and then be frozen back by the winter cold. Spring planting gives the seed time to sprout and build up to withstand the rigors of the next winter. There are two ways to store the nuts over the winter to keep them for spring planting. One is to keep them in a large box, alternating a layer of horse chestnuts with a 2 or 3 inch layer of sand, the top being well covered with sand.

The box can be left out of doors. This method is not always desirable because sometimes the nuts sprout in the box and the 1. Laros smooth fiang'nq rayon crep. slip with lavish imported lac. trim on bodies and hem, straight-cut sltirt.

TrfbaM Fran ScrrfccJ Washington, Aug. 8 Pentagon officials, beset by questions from rrvists, employers, and others affected by the military mobilization, today urged patience until duty orders can be issued and deferment machinery can be set up. Officials said no standard schedule for calling up reservists has been fixed and there is no way reservists can estimate when or If they will be called. Defense department policy Is that reservists do not have to be called according to age or dependency because they already had signified their readiness for duty by joining the reserves. Placed on Inactive Doty No special consideration is planned for marine and navy officers kept involuntarily in the reserve after the war.

Navy and marine officers were placed on inactive duty after the war and never were discharged, thus remaining subject to recall at any time. For reservists who pressed for information about whether they would be called to active duty or how they could be deferred, military officials had the following advice: The army and marine corps are not calling reservists in a hit or miss fashion. They want troops for combat service or in special occupational listings. But the reservists will not be able to find out in advance whether they will be called. Dependency One Factor 2.

The first calls generally will go to enlisted men and the junior noncommissioned and officer grades. 3. The army will call individual reservists on the basis of dependency. Those with no dependents will go first. 4.

The marine corps has set no dependency schedule. 5. The air force and the navy are calling relatively small numbers of reservists, many on a voluntary basis. System Yet to Be Set 6. Procedures and a system for handling of defendants have not been set up, but local reserve officials soon will have copies of defense department orders on deferments.

Appeals procedures also will be established. 7. Applications for deferments should not be filed before duty orders are received. There is no advantage in filing in advance because the application will not bej considered until the reservist has been ordered to duty. 8.

Resignations from the reserve are not being accepted. 9. Local reserve commanders will be able to advise reservists on changes in mobilization plans. jrwrts rroLr ix home A platinum ting. with a hull rant diamond, IT until diamond, and two urtn atonra.
