"Broadcast News" This drama uses an equation that works By MALCOLM L. JOHNSON Courant Film Critic When you first hear of this film about a dedicated teacher who pushes his students into high scores on the advanced placement calculus test, "Stand and Deliver" sounds like the kind of audiovisual program you snooze through in the school auditorium. But from Jaime Escalante's first day at Garfield High School, math teaching takes on a new, strangely exciting dimension. "Stand and Deliver" is clearly a labor of love for its star, Edward James Olmos, who gained 40 pounds and turned thin-haired every day to play Escalante, and for its co-writ- ers, Ramon Menendez, who also directed, and Tom Musca, who also produced. As MenendezMusca Olmos Productions, the trio put to- gether a film version of a real life I that seems almost impossible in two ways both in its success story and I its success as a film.

Menendez and Musca begin with the arrival of Escalante in a modern blackboard jungle. Wild conditions prevail in both corridors and class- rooms at Garfield, a school for Los Angeles barrio kids. Escalante, who has left a high-paying electronics 'firm to teach computer science to Latino kids, immediately learns this will not be possible. Garfield has no computers. His math class doesn't seem desperate to master even ele- mentary arithmetic either.

To make matters worse, Garfield faces the loss of its accreditation. This chronicle of Escalante's struggles isn't just another drama of an idealistic teacher who refuses to be defeated and finds the one kid he can help, however. Escalante forces all of his students to learn a difficult subject. He does it first by awaken- ing their "ganas," Spanish for desire, and then' by playing games with them. He also badgers and insults his charges, threatening them with dead-end jobs such as frying fast food.

And he challenges them to work harder and harder, to give up money they might have earned at part-time jobs and to work during weekends and vacations all to bring up their math skills. Their admiration for the man they call "Kimo" (short for "Kimo accounts for much of Escalante's success with his students a gang member with a hairnet and an image to keep up, a less-than-promising boy who wants to get himself a car This low-budget film, partly funded by a number of large corporations, is also a lesson in what can be accomplished by committed film makers. The all-important element, of course, is Olmos, whose characterization should put him into contention for an Oscar a year hence. From his stiff walk to his fast, scat-tergun delivery yet oddly grave manner, this is a transformation that makes the actor utterly invisible and the character totally dominant. The students are admirable too, which is a tribute to the film makers, who chose unglamorous, convincingly assorted young performers.

The lone star is Lou Diamond Phillips, who displays more charisma and grace as the cool "cholo" Angel than in his larger but less intriguing role as Ritchie Valens in "La Bamba." In addition to casting with uncompromising care, Menendez and Musca tell their story with complexity, showing both the intellectual pleasures of the classroom and the struggles the kids must endure at home. The narrative technique is especially strong as the film hits its climax when the kids test so high they are suspected of cheating and must be retested. Never has the silently charged climate of the college boards been so tensely set out. But throughout, this film scores high by standing up for its ideals and delivering them with drama and integrity. Rated PG, this film contains some rude language and some run-ins with the law, but is fine fare for all school-aged kids.

Film review STAND AND DELIVER, Directed by Ramon Menendez: screenplay by Menendez and Tom Musca; director of photography, Tom Richmond; music composed by Craig Satan; art director, Milo; edited by Nancy Richardson; produced by Musca; executive producer, Lindsay Law. A Warner Bros, release ot an American Playhouse Theatrical Film presentation of a MenendezMusca Olmos Production, opening today at Showcase Cinemas, East Hartford. Running time: 95 minutes. Jaime Escalante Edward James Olmos Raquel Ortega Virginia Paris Tito Mark Eliot Pancho Will Gotay Javier Patrick Baca Lupe Ingrid Oliu Molina Carmen Argenziano Joe Goodell Tyde Kierney Fabiola Escalante Rosana De Soto Claudia Karla Montana Ana Vanessa Marquez Chuco Daniel Villarreal Angel Lou Diamond Phillips Rafaela Lydia Nicole Dr. Ramirez Andy Garcia Pearson Rif Mutton Excellent; Very Good; Good; Fair; ft Poor that doesn't jerk and sputter, a math whiz whose father wants her to quit to work in his restaurant, and an overweight young woman who has to care for her younger brothers and sisters.

The students are willing to do anything to please their teacher, because he obviously is willing to do anything to help them excel. Many less-committed teachers are going to be rankled by the implication that this is what is takes to be a great teacher. But you can't really argue with such successes. "Stand and Deliver" is a lesson in the power of the teacher as a team leader. GLLASalL 0 take you beyond the horizon.
