It has the chirm of romance, heightened by the conviction that it is real, not fictitious life, which is hera reoordad. it not only touches the sensibilities, but contributes to tha enjojments of literary taste; and gives evidence thai a more than ordinary judgment has been exercised in the arrangement and uisposition of the material employed. corner Lexington and Green sta. THE SUN. BALTIMORE. FRIPAY, DEC. 16, 1859.

Ths House Spkakkbship; There were two votv Ings in the House of Representatives yesterday for Speaker. Mr. Sberman, republican, came within four rotes of an election, though getting the same number only as the previous day that Is 110. This was caused by the paring off of several members, which reduced the number necessary for the success of a candidate to 111 He had an accession, however, of three votes from tha anti Lecomptonites, viz: Messrs. Hickman and Schwartz, of Pennsylvania, and Haskin, of the ninth district, New York.

The vote of Mr. Bo-cock, democrat, was S3. In our notice here yesterday the vote of Mr. was printed at which the intelligent leader would readily know should have been S3, as shown correctly in the Congressional report. Amusfmbxts ot thk PKorLS.TAe Theatre, etc.

It is not our custom to thrust upon a business people an unwonted measure of critical or display about theatrical, operatic or other entertainments. Our erudition has not warranted newspaper exploits In that direction. Nevertheless, we know when any thing in that line affords us pleasure, and are perhaps as smart In that respect as a youngster with his sugar candy, or that remarkable juvenile who dropped hot Iron when it burned his fingers. Something else, too, we have rather more than aVague idea about, aad that is suggested by the old saw "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." The people must have their aruust-ments, and amanijst these we waive the casuistic issue the tlieutre lias always been, and ever will doubtless be, prominent. Theatrical entertainments have aa Inexplicable charm for all ages and all classes ef society; and when carefully directed, restrained by intelligent experience, and male to conform To the tastes and refinement of the age they have proved not only Indispensable, but safeguards against influences ot no quest itnable character.

In a city like Baltimore, a handsome, commodious, attractive and comfortable place of theatrical entertainment is, in the present stite of society, indispensable. Feople must and will have some sort of theatrical relaxation, aad it is a question for the whole public whether its quality shall be good bad, or something worse. The majority of strangers who visit the city expect to find such a resort for their leisure evenings hers. Multitudes from the rural districts, customers in theavenuesof commerce during the day, seek such relaxation as the theatre offers them at night. And whether it Is the tragedy, comedy, opera, farce, or other diversity, it is due to them that it should be good, and served np to them with all the best associations and accessories practicable.

To this extent our merchants, manufacturers, traders, mechanics, all who have a stake in the general prosperity, are more or less interested. That is to say, while such entertainment is sought, it is of general concern that it should be of tie best, and free as possible from objectionable features. Thus interesttd fact, we have reason to doubt whether the matter is esteemed, practically, as it deserves to be, by those to whom it addresses Itself. As an instance, we have the experiancs of Mr. Ford at Holliday street.

He has by great assiduity, and aided by substantial friends, completely renovated that estiblishment. It is now, in contrast with the old interior, palatial in its aspect. Exceedingly commodious in" evsry respect, supplied with every thing that can assure comfort to the audience, a superior company upon the stage, and a succession of distinguished artisu to give variety to the entertainment, he has to look night-, ly upon what must be a most discouraging scene. He has excluded all objectionable characters from the bouse, established an efficient police and. offered a series of the choicest performances, and all for what? To realize indifference, apathy, almost a studied absence ef those whose presence would grace the elegant circle provided for them, elicit the best talent and the best exhibition of it, replenish the treasury and maintain in Baltimore at least one first class place of dramatic entertainment.

Ia this remark, we must not be supposed to speak invidiously; for those who do occupy the respective divisions of the house, are really those to whom the management is aloas indebted their presence is his sole support, and they alone contribute to the maintenance of ths theatre in the city. From the current aspect of the house, we per. ceive that an Interesting "question in respect to the enterprise must speedily be solved. And it amounts to this: Whether the theatre is to be sustained by the great public, especially by the mercantile and manufacturing interests of the eity, as an Institution identified with the general prosperity and worthy to be considered with a specific claim upon expenses," an! affording an ample return, or whether it is to decline from neglect and to be positively shut up and surrendered to the bats and rats. We can do no more than throw the matter before the people for such consideration as it seems to us to demand, and leave the management to await a practical response to the question Thk Endorsers ot the HxLrxa Book Whatever the followers of the apostle of the higher law may think proper to deny or disclaim about the incendiary Helper abolitionist book, Mr.

Senator Seward himself Is precluded from denying or disclaiming anything. We have it under his own hand that he read the book carefully, and pronounces it altogether unobjectional. On the cover of the "Compendium" the author quotes Mr. Seward's certificate, as follews: "I have read the 'Impending Crisis of the South" with deep attention. It seems to ma a work of great merit, rich, yet accurate, in statistical information, and logical in analysis." This was sufficient for the black republicans generally.

Hence the sixty-eight members of Congress who signed the recommendation could do without question, without reading the book, as some of them, Including Mr. Sherman, the republican candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives, now declare they did. This declaration is made in extenuation of their signatures, but Would seem to Indicate more than anything else an entire recklessness of action on their zeal of party and promotion cf self in that connection. A Clergyman's Opinion of John Brown. The venerable Alfred Griffith, of the Baltimore M.

E. Conference, after contradicting a statement that he had visited John Brown in jail at Charlestown, and declaring that he never, to the best of his knowledge, heard of him until his Harper's Ferry raid, proceeds to give his opinion of the whole band of insurgents as follows: As to my opinion of John Browu and his coadjutors and accomplices, (whether present or hundreds of miles away.) it is that if any men, or set of men, ever forfeited their lives to the offended and violated laws of their country, so did John Brown and his associates in crime for they had, one and all, both directly and constructively, ommitted and perpetrated the highest grade of crime known to the criminal jurisprudence ef ail the civilized nations of the earth through all periGds of their history, to wit: Murder, se-ditiouf insurrection and treason, and I have honored, and still honor, Virginia, no less for her fearless firmness than for hl-r vigilance in prosecuting with fairness, to condign punishment, the miserable perpetrators. Clothtns and Pat or Virginia Soldiers. The correspondent of the Norfolk Argus writes as follows from Charlestown: The pav of a private is SI I per month; of a musician SfliJ; sf a corporal S13; of a sergeant $1j per month. The pay or the lieu tena tits "and captains amounts to between So0 and STO per mouth.

Not less than one month's pay is given. Those who return before their cempany lose their pay. Haxgmax's Day. Besides the four men who are to be executed at Charlestown, to-day, a slave named Adam, for the murder of Moore, and a man named George M. Buckley the murder of George NV.

Goodwin, his wife's father, will be hung in Tampa, Florida. A man named Beauregard will also be hung to-day iu Montreal Canada, and a colored man at llarris-burg, Pa. The Weekly Sun. This delightful repositorj of lu.rature and hsrald of intelligence contains this week a further installment of that absorbing novelette called 'POJWEROT ABBEt," the developments of which become in the present number intensely thriving. The story is drawing to a close, and as we shall shortly commence another of surpassing merit, all who desire to secure the -whole otit, should be sure to seal in their subscriptions before it commenees.

The programme for this evening comprises an extremely interesting variety of entertainment, and exhibits the earnest purpose of the management an the artists before the people to contribute to the general gratification. Ths eosa-sion is for ths benefit of the charming actress a id vocalist, Miss Richings. Tha first piece is Howard Pay beautiful domestia drama, caliei "Clari, the Maid of Milan." and with ths cast of Mr. Richings as the venerable Rolarao, and the accomplished Miss Richings as Clari. we do not suppose tha piece was ever presented more effectively in Baltimore.

After the drama Miss Richings will sing, in character, "La Marseillaise," ani certainly with brilliant eflVct. Ths musical burietta of The any Fish Wife, will follow, in which Miss Riching3 scstair.8 two characters with great zest and point, and sines several favorita melodies. The entertainment wil! conclude with the giand, imposing and stirring tableau of Washington, in which the impersonation of the great chieftain by Mr. Richings is very striking and successful, and the whole scene, with the young Caroline as the Goddess of Liberty, leading the national anthem, and sustain! by the full orchestra and the entire company, surpassing description.
