Berns, 68, of New York City, a former semiprofessional baseball player, died Saturday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute, New York City. He was born in Hartford and lived here for 18 years. He attended Hartford public schools and the accounting school of New York University. Mr.

Berns played baseball for the Frog Hollow Senators and the Savitt Gems. He also served as manager for Lerner shops in Houston, Milwaukee, Providence, R.I., and New York City. At the time of his death he was president of the mens club Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York City. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mrs.

Julie H. Berns; a Abrahams daughter, Michael of New Jersey; a son, Jay Berns of Long Island, N.Y.; three brothers, Fred Berns of New Haven, Judge Simon Bernstein of Bloomfield and Irving Bernstein of West Hartford; six sisters, Mrs. Louis Eve Black of New Haven, Mrs. Norman Shaye Rosenfield of Putnam, Mrs. Lewis Rose Dunn, Leonard Ruth DuBoff, Mrs.

Alexander Bea Cherlin and Mrs. William Ann Libman all of West Hartford; three grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Stephen Wise Synagogue, 30 West 68th New York City. Burial will be in New York.

BAckus Hospital, after being found in her wrecked car off Rts. 2 and 149 Thursday. Miss Charles had been pinned in her car for two nights of freezing temperatures before she was found by two passersby 42 hours after her car plunged 100 feet down an enbankment.

J. Albert Hitz, Ex-Insurance Executive, Dies WINDHAM J. Albert Hitz, 66, of North Road, New England divisional manager of the Equitable Life Assurance Co. of Hartford until his retirment last year, died Saturday in Windham Community Memorial Hospital. Mr.

Hitz was born in New York City. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed by the Equitable Life Assurance Co. for 30 years before retiring. He leaves his wife Mrs.

Elizabeth Cole Hitz: two brothers, Clinton B. Hitz of Floral Park, N.Y., and Russell C. Hitz of Cape Porpoise, Maine: and a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Hendrickson of Nutley, N.J. The funeral is Thursday at 2 p.m.
