late of 3015 N. Spauidihg avenue. Monday, April 4, 1955 'SUDDEN DEATH' STILL STALKS IN SKOKIE RD. Accident Rate Is Far Above Edens' BY HAL FOUST Lakie Powell, recently retired as a business agent for the AFL teamsters union, was driving south in Skokie rd. U.

S. 411 It was a beautiful spring day and he and his wife, Helen, had used it to inspect their new home on Bonner lake, near Burlington, 74 miles north of Chicago. It was early afternoon so they expected to reach their apartment at 7319 East End av. before the evening rush hour. Powell at 63 is a conservative driver.

He drove a truck for 22 years before becoming a labor organizer. He heard all of the safety lectures. He was aware of the high accident record on this four lane highway thru Lake county. Draws Near Yellow Truck After stopping for a red light at Half Day rd. 111.

22 in Highland Park, Powell was accelerating but still was traveling at about half the 45 mile speed limit when he approached a yellow truck of the Illinois highway department. It was on the outside, the right side lane of the two southbound lanes, and Powell prepared to pass to its left, on the inside lane, next to the center parkway. The truck driver was James C. Towner, 62, of Mundelein. He had worked for the state highway department under former Gov.

Green and he got his job back again when Gov. Stratton took office. He had SO years' driving experience. His state record had no previous 'accident reports. Truck Has Two Choices Towner was hauling two laborers to a sewer maintenance job on the east side of the Skokie right of way just south of Half Day rd.

He had a choice of continuing a half mile or so to the first paved cross-over, then returning north the east side of the roadwey to the sewer job, or he could cut across the center parkway, as so many persons have 'done at so many places on Skokie, ruining the grass and damaging trees and shrubs. Towner elected to take the short cut- in his report later to police and his boss, he said he signaled his intention to turn. If so, it wasn't notictd. It wouldn't be expected at that location, on the outside lane and at a place without a crossroad or side driveway. Powell later told police there was no signal from the truck.

Cuts Sharply to Left Thus, Towner, going about 20 miles an hour, turned left sharply, directly across the path of Powell's car. There was a scream cf brakes, a crash of crumpling metal, and clatter of broken glass. Bloody Skokie rd. had scored another traffic casualty, this one a personal injury. Mrs.

Powell's collar bone was broken. Others escaped serious injury. On this five miles of Skokie rd. in Highland Park, there have been five deaths since Jan. 1.

Capt. Earl Lempinen of the Highland Park police commented that each fatal accident a truck was involved. Last year, in the 26 miles of Skokie thru Lake county, there were 19 traffic deaths. The death rate per car-mile of travel was seven times that of the more modern Edens expressway in Cook county where traffic is faster and twice as dense. Crossings Are Worst Chief Edward B.

Patten of the Highland Park police said that accidents were most numerous at the approaches to signal controled intersections, mainly rear end collisions. He said risks were being increased monthly by new, paths cut haphazardly across the center parkway and by the addition of more driveways into new roadside enterprises. Skokie is still posted as a freeway," designated by legis lature as a route for limited access from abutting property, but the state in 1953, when it cut truck taxes 20 million dollars a year, abandoned plans to moderize this route as a land-: scaped expressway. This main route from Chicago to Milwaukee and Wisconsin 'resorts, which also serve Chicago lake front suburbs, is deteriorating rapidly. i A3 Menrna ftratni.autlf 9Q9 N.

Miriam by North Shore Train Joseph Zwadzich, 59, of Milwaukee, a patient the Downey veterans hospital since 1947, was last night when he was struck by a Chicago, 'North Shore and Milwaukee railroad train at the Downey station. Hospital employes said they believed he wandered into the path of the train after leaving a group of patients returning from a movie. -FUNERAL DIRECTORS- LAIN Funeral Information SOUTH CHAPEL 316 W. 63D-ST.
