Saturday mommr at be over Europe. Russia, Asia, or. as in -the present case, over North America- As cold air billows southward, it comes in contact with more warm air arid then precipitation, or rain, results. And the rain will continu until a blast of wind from the northwest, strong enough to blow away the warm front, comes along. Polar Front Breaks Variable.

These breaks in the polar front may follow the same southward channel for several years In succession, or they may carry their afflictions southward by different routes each year. The current weather is similar to the weather conditions In the spring of 1936. which caused floods in the Ohio river valley, said Dr. Helmut Landsberg, associate professor of meteorology at the University of Chicago. Rainfall since the first of May, as recorded at Loyola university, has been inches.

Father Schmitt said, setting a record for the nine years the records have been kept at the university. The previous high was 5.16 inches during May, 1940. Amateur Theory Discarded. For the benefit of those persons who live near army or navy rifle pits or gun ranges, experienced weather men doubt that rain follows the firing of heavy guns, a theory often heard during World War I when American doughboys did much of their fighting kncedeep in the mud cf sunny France. "These pressure areas reach as high as miles, one weather expert said.

It would take a mighty big gun to make any impression on all that air." One explanation of the reason battles are frequently followed by rain is the fact that rain falls periodically and most generals start their battles in good weather. When the battle is over the rain that falls is due anyway, regardless of the firing cf heavy guns. They say 10 per cent more coal is used, on an average, during an open winter, when fresh air fiends sleep with their windows open, thus letting much precious heat escape. During cold winters, on the other hand, even the fanatics are unable to withstand open windows, and the heat in the house is conserved. So far as the present polar break is concerned, with all its drizzles and deluges, the weather bureau put fortji an optimistic note yesterday. That blast of air from the northwest must be on Its way. The presentation was made at a luncheon in Hotel Sherman, at which Ned H. Dearborn, executive vice president of the safety council, presided.

The award was made on the city's reduction of traffic deaths below the average of the preceding three years, and on general accident pre-vention efforts, such as educational programs and engineering advances. Bad case of shock, and the liquor wearing off," she said. "Maybe he did kill Polly, but even so, the poor thing wasn't in his senses. I don't suppose the good Lord would count it murder. I told Sheriff. Anderson he's not to devil Lem any more, trying to get him to confess.

And don't you go asking him questions! Why, his confession wouldn't mean a thing. He's on the verge of D. He's just plain gone to pieces right when he needs any courage he could muster." NELSON Helen Robertson Nelson. 1030 enough sense to learn to use the microscopes and keep records as she's told if she can make lettuce infusions and count, she can do the work all right. She doesn't have to know what she's doing. She just has to do what she's told." Paul asked what the Job paid. Eighteen dollars a week! It would be a fortune to Isabel.

"I know a girl that needs a Job pretty darn bad," he told Dr. Conk lln. "Her mother just died and her father's in a jam. She's a high school graduate made good grades. I hope, he told himself.

I wish you'd let her try it, doctor." "What's her name?" "Isabel Richards. Her father was bookkeeper in my father's bank for years. Maybe you'd be good enough to see her anyhow. Dr. Conklin.

I don't suppose she could come over until after her- mother's funeral tomorrow. There's not much chance in Hilltown for a girl to get a good Job." "Why. sure, James bring her over. If she could be here Friday and Saturday so Miss Macey could show her the work I'd rather have her. than some co-ed who is thru school and only hanging around to be near the one she Going back to Hilltown, Paul's elation faded and doubts assailed him.

He knew that in this research a day's carelessness could wipe out weeks, even months, of patient labor. Did he know how faithful Isabel would be? And how would she get back and forth to the un versity? He remembered then that Johnny Henkle drove a earful of Hilltown students over to University Town every day. She could ride with them. Paul's courage came flooding back at this sign that things could work out in detail. He increased the speed of his motorcycle, driving over the slippery roads at breakneck speed to be home a few moments early so that he could stop and talk to Isabel.

But she was not at her grandmother's. She was at work. "Why, she shouldn't be working today! Paul was scandalized. "Mrs. Engleman needs her, with Polly gone, and Isabel needs the money," said Mrs.

Richards, simply enough. "Paul, your flowers are beautifuL Isabel just cried her eyes out when they came this morning. Polly's got lots of flowers," she added with satisfaction. Paul left Isabel's grandmother's house with a few moments to spare and he decided to go to the jail to see Lem Richards, GERNER Eucenia Gerner. beloved wife of TURNER Aura Yen Cleave Turner.

Have several showy bouquets up. one from me. and one from the James family, and one marked from Lem." "I understand." Sue said. She picked up the money and counted it and put it in her pocket. She stood looking at Paul somberly for a moment.

"Are you sure you want to do this for Isabel. Paul?" she asked. Yoa know you can't afford It. I'm afraid she will never appreciate it." Of course I want to do It," said Paul impatiently. "It's pretty swell of you," Sue said.

And quite unexpectedly she leaned across the table and took his face in her two hands and kissed him quickly. Paul spread out his books and Sue returned to the doctor's office. Paul did not look up until Mary Ellen came in and told him that the doctor was waiting in the car for Paul to drive him out to Whites. Late that night, dozing behind the stove at Whites', waiting on Dr. Lockerbie, Paul thought about Isabel, about her despair and her troubles and her need of a friend.

He could see his troubles and Isabel's as following a similar pattern. She would find, he resolved, that she had as good a friend as the doctor had been to him. Dr. Lockerbie called him and they went out and Paul drove to town in the cold of early morning. Paul's first thought on waking was that he had forgotten to take care of the doctor's bag the night before.

He had not forgotten it in years. In the surgery he emptied it. cleaned all the instruments, and put them in the sterilizer. Alice Nightingale was scrubbing the office. She Was a little woman with knotted hands and a cutting tongue.

She talked incessantly. "You know well's I do, Paul James, that Polly Richards was a proud woman. Only trouble with her was that she was sentimental. Any girl in her right mind would have knowed that Lem Richards wouldn't never amount to nothin. But he was a pretty boy.

He sure wanted Polly. She never had much time for him. then all of a sudden she took up with him. They got married and moved to the city. Polly was ambitious, those days.

But after a couple of years she saw Lem wasn't going nowheres and she was glad to bring her baby, Isabel, and come back to Hilltown where Lem'a folks and his old friends could help her look after him. Them girls, Isabel and Betty, they got good stuff back of them but they sure won't never have much chance In this town. they'll be all right." said Paul. "All humans have a mixed inheritance." "Yes." said Alice Nightingale, wringing her mop, "but some of It's more human than others." Paul was glad to finish his work and escape to the kitchen where Mary Ellen gave him his breakfast. Paul had Isabel on his mind.

One thing she needed, he decided, as he rode his noisy steed to University Town, was a good job! Something that would improve her earnings and build up her self-esteem. As often happens, Paul's energetic thought stirred up an unexpected opportunity. In his 2 o'clock class his friend, Patrick, told him that one of the seniors In the medical college had married Dr. Conklin's laboratory assistant and that she was leaving her job. Paul went at once to the Biology building where Dr.

Conklin was conducting his research in invertebrate zoology. The doctor had a grant for research. Paul asked him about the job. "No, I haven't any one," said Dr. Conklin in response to Paul's question, "and my grant doesn't allow for a trained laboratory assistant." "Could any one do the work?" asked Paul.

"Well, no," said Dr. Conklin. Not just any one. But the girl doesn't need technical if that's what you mean. She's got to be neat and prompt and faithful.
