O. E. S. Austin 2012. UNDERTAKERS' DEATH NOTICES 1 4 Saturday, Nov.

23, 1946 KELLY REPORTED READY TO MAKE RACE FOR MAYOR Aids Tell Him of Support by Business Men BY GEORGE TAGGE Mayor Kelly Is a candidate for reelection and will stay In the race barring unforeseen developments, It was reported yesterday. His scouts have reported that politically active segments of big business will support him. They have told him that he will have much more of this than he had In 3913 when his Republican opponent was Gcorjje B. MeKibbin, who lost by 114,000 votes. Republican leaders now on hand were not sui prised or unduly alarmed.

One said Russell W. Root, choice of the regular G. O. P. ward committeemen and Gov.

Green, was 2 the "natural" candidate to appeal lo the middle class, and the chance to pin the money bags label on the Democrats fits into plans to dc- throne Kelly. Laughs Oft Objections Holdine the marathon record for mayor, Kelly appears to have re covered completely from the Nov, 5 election in which the Democrats held Chicago but lost the country towns of Cook county by whopping pluralities of up to 140,000. Apparently hale and hearty despite his recent 70th birthday, he reportedly laughed down the objections of Mrs. Keiiy and a physician to his candidacy. Trimary contests of a mild nature are possible in both parties.

Paul 11. Douglas, former alderman and since then a wounded major In the marine corps, confirmed that a poll Is hHnjr taken with his name on a straw ballot with those of Kelly and Root. Groups have called on me urg-I Ing me to run," said Douglas, again a professor of economics at the Uni-; versity of Chicago. I have given -them no encouragement. It Is a good life I am leading back here at the university." In 1942 Senate.

Trlmary Later in the Interview he said he had not given his followers "much encouragement." He said it would not be fair to identify them, even as to whether they are business men, professors, or students. Prof. Douglas made an independent race for United States senator in the 1942 primary against Raymond Me-Keough, regular Democratic organization winner. William F. Gailing, a fixture In Republican politics, announced his candidacy for mayor with the aid of the so-called Cook County Busi ness Men's committee.

In the re cent campaign this organization caused considerable confusion at the 11th hour by distributing 1,500,000 sample ballots marked mostly for Democratic county candidates. B. M. C. Indorsed Republican The Business Men's committee, organized in 1940 to combat vote frauds, had indorsed the straight Republican ticket and contended that the late flurry of activity by the "Cook County Business Men's committee was Intended to cash In on the B.

P. ward in Chicago, the 19th, yesterday presented the name of Emmet F. Byrne for city clerk to ohn I East, Cook county party chairman. Notice also was sent by telegram to Gov. Green in Phoenix, where he will end his vacation Monday or Tuesday.

Mayoralty Candidate Root is expected to return from Phoenix tomorrow. r. B. SANITARIUM BOARD SETS UP CONTROL OFFICE The board of the Municipal Tuberculosis sanitarium voted yesterday to appoint a full time tuberculosis control officer, whose task will be to coordinate city and county interests and activities toward the elimination of tubercular ailments. The board's action was in line with a recent suggestion from the United States public health service.

The motion to create the office was made by Harry Reynolds, vice president of the board, and approved by Dr. David J. Davis, president, and Dr. Earl Klcinschmidt. Letters were mailed to Surgeon Gen.

Thomas Parran, the Chicago Medical society, the Institute of Medicine, the Tuberculosis Institute of Chicago and Cook County, and the Chicago Tuberculosis Control committee asking them to recommend qualified candidates for the control post. The sanitarium officials said they wanted to select a man before the end of December so that their budget, which must be drawn up next month, can be arranged accordingly. CAPTURE 2 WHO FLED HOSPITAL AT GREAT LAKES Joseph Jabcon, 19, Kalamazoo, seaman 2d class, and Don Winslow, 20, Negro, storekeeper 2d class, both mental patients in the navy hospital at Great Lakes, were recaptured yesterday near Skokie highway and Ridge Lake Forest. 10 hours after they escaped from the hospital by slugging a hospital corpsman. Both wore only hospital pajamas at the time of their escape, but had picked up additional clothing later.

They spent the morning hours, in temperatures- ranging down to 16 degrees, in the open and were suffering from ex posure. DOCTOR PRESCRIBES LIQUOR FOR HEART VICTIMS WHO SMOKE Memphis, Nov. 22 JP)A heart specialist today prescribed alcoholic drinks for persons addicted to the use of tobacco if they suffer from diseases of the heart. Dr. William D. Stroud, professor of cardiology at the gradufe school of medicine, University of Pennsyl vania, uttered his prescription be' fore the midsouth regional meeting of the American College of Phy slclans.

"Tobacco has a bad effect on heatt disease," the doctor said, if the person is sensitive to nicotine The best antidote is alcohol, which dilates the arteries." Dr. Stroud said he envisaged a smoker with heart disease going thru life with a cigar in one hand and a highball in the other altho I'm sure the Women's Christian Temperance union won't agree." I don't mean to get plastered all the time," added the doctor. HEARING OPENS ON CRASH OF AIR LINER KILLING 2 Testimony was heard in the fed eral courthouse yesterday by Robert Chrisp, civil aeronautics authority of flclal, at the opening of a hearing to determine the cause of a crash by a United Air Lines twin engined plane at Cleveland, Nov. 11. The pilot and co-pilot were killed in the accident, but 18 other persons aboard survived.

According to statements made during the day, the crash occurred as the plane was making an ap proach fivom the north for a scheduled landing. William Alston, a me chanlc on United's Cleveland staff, said he watched the plane making what appeared to be a normal ap proach, "except that it appeared to be well north of the field as it de scended." OF I. TRUSTEES ASK SURVEY OF PACKED SCHOOLS Trustees of the University of Illi nois, faced with enrollment demands far beyond the capacity (of the uni versity, yesterday called for a com prehensive survey of the state's en tire school system, with a view to determining how educational needs can be met with the greatest econ omy of tax funds. The trustees, who met in the Unl versity club, acted after hearing a report from President George btoddard indicating that unre stricted admissions to the univer slty might produce a total of 39.075 students within the next four years The university now has a record enrollment of nearly 26,000, lnclud ing 18,500 at Urbana campus. Coleman R. Griffith, university provost, said an enrollment of more than 39,000 would require operat ing expenditures twice the size of tha record breaking 65 million dol lar budget for the blennium start ing next July.

Park Livingston, president of the board, said the current crisis, brought about by the return of war veterans, has hastened the need for considering the over-all educational program of the state. lie predicted that a survey would show the neces sity for radical reforms at all levels of the school system, from the unl versity to the rural schools. Runner-up was Morris Swlerlnga of McKinley school, South Holland. Third and fourth places went in order to Rene Wernicke of Lincoln school, Dolton, and Frank Stuart of Washington school, West Harvey.

DEMOCRATS PUT 208 EMPLOYES IN JOB SHELTER Democrats have decided to abide by a 1943 state statute providing, in effect, that 208 building service em ployes of the Cook county sheriff be transferred to the county board.

Sheriff-elect Elmer Michael Walsh is a Republican, while the county board will continue to have a Democratic majority. Attorneys Michael F. Ryan and Cnslmir Wachowskl will file peti tions Monday with the county board, requesting the board to comply with the law. Copies of the petition will be sent to all Circuit court Judges, because the transfer would remove the Jobs from partial control of the Judges' committee on help. Republican members of the county board, Including the president-elect, William N.

Erickson, said they could not block the Democratic maneuver. SleFosepk ASPIRIN -NONE BETTER ttx ior rener or montn-n Mv functional naln. 'AY I headache, neural- Sia. noma 01 juir, 5c. Wtnta bartfulnl WfllLBV IlttB ATI -TV LAIN SON Funeral Information SOUTH SIDE CHAPEL 83D AND HARVARD-AV.
