Mr. Illsley began his career in the city engineer's office in St. Louis, at IS. He was an engineer for the Milwaukee (Wis. water works from 1S72 to 1875 and later served as a mining engineer and a federal deputy mineral surveyor.

Return- inS to St. Louis, he entered into partnership with his father and helped build the first Indian schools in what is now Oklahoma. Mr. Illsley moved to Chicago in 1R.S9.- He built some of the city's earlier skyscrapers, including the Marquette building. Other cities in which he constructed buildings were Detroit, Milwaukee, Buffalo, N.

Duluth, Memphis, Gary, Ind, and Toronto, Canada. He was a life member of the Union League Club and the Western Society of Engineers and for many years an elder of the First Presbyterian church of Evanston. He retired to a farm in New Jersey about 16 years ago.
