(AP) It was a last-minute accident that moved Claman Parker up from the undeica'rd to fight former World Boxing Assoca-tion heavyweight champion John Tate today. But Parker, a North Carolina farmer and brick layer, says it's the opportunity of his life. "I don't know if can beat John Tate," he said yesterday. "I'm up here on a chance and I'm going to give it my 100 percent." Tate had been scheduled to fight Jody Ballard of Jacksonville, in a bout that already had been postponed twice. But Ballard was scratched this week after he was injured when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a car.

That's when Parker, who had been scheduled to fight Walter Santemore earlier in the evening, became Tate's opponent. Parker, 28, has a lot of disadvantages to overcome to beat Tate in the bout at Bill Meyer Stadium. The Lincolnton, N.C., resident is four inches shorter than the 6-foot-4 Tate, and weighed in yesterday at 203 pounds 37 pounds lighter than his opponent. He also doesn't have Tate's experience in big-time boxing. Tate, 26, a Marion City, native who lives in Knoxville, was a member of the 1976 U.S.

Olympic boxing team and rose though the professional ranks to capture the WBA crown in 1979. Schimunek Funeral Home. 3331 Brehms lane (at Mannasota and Erdman avenues), on Monday at 8:16 A.M. Jones. ADAMS 8. brother-in-law of Chester Visiting hours Saturday Orioles run bases poorly Continued from page 9 right now I'd have to say I'm satisfied. We averaged only 12 pitches an inning while using all nine pitchers in the two games and we only walked two hitters." Jim Palmer and Sammy Stewart worked two innings apiece last night, each giving up a run, while Scott Mcpregor, Tippy Martinez and Tim Stoddard all threw one scoreless inning. Palmer gave up the first run in the opening inning on a walk to Pete Rose, a force, a stolen base and Schmidt's two-out single.

Keith Moreland accounted for the Philles' other run with a long homer off Stewart in the fourth. The Orioles' lone score came on a long home run by Murray, who also homered Thursday night in Philly. He appears to be out of the doldrums he was fighting in the first half of the season. "It's good to see Eddie swinging like that again," said Weaver. "He looks like he's ready and it would be a big help if he had a hot bat when we start playing again." ITEMS: The Orioles were to hold an open workouts at noon today and again tomorrow, then resume regular season play against Kansas City here Monday night, when Dennis Martinez (7-3) is scheduled to face Dennis Leonard (6-7).

Open champion who has been second in his last two starts, shot 69 for fifth place at 137t Straight-hitting Tom Kite, seventh or better in 10 of his last 11 tournaments; former Masters champion Fuzzy Zoell-er and non-winner Vance Heafner were next at 138. Kite had 67, Zoeller 68 and Heafner 70. Nicklaus, searching for an unprecedented sixth PGA and 18th major professional championship, kept his driving under control, shot 68 and was menacing at 139. "This is not a course to get into a drivng contest. I'm not trying to nail the ball; I'm just trying to keep it in play.

I could hit it a lot farther," said Nicklaus, still shopping for his first triumph of 1981. Jerry Pate, who won his 1976 U.S. Open crown on this course, and Gil Morgan matched Nicklaus' total, Pate shooting 68 and Morgan 69. Murphy, second to Dave Stockton in the 1970 PGA, yet a non-winner since 1975, appeared headed for early disaster. But he sank a 15-foot putt on the opening hole to avoid a double bogey.

''Surprise, surprise, especially with the way I started off," he greeted the media for his postround interview. Murphy, 38, one of the game's 31 millionaires, settled down. He parred the next seven holes, birdied 8, 15 and 16. His only other bogey came at 14 when he caught a tree with his approach shot. Murphy may be in the right frame of mind to win his first major.

"I have a good feeling. I'm doing enough things right. And I'm making some putts. That's been my probem for the last two years," he said. Naturally, the subject would get around to Murphy's weight.

He handles such inquries with good humor- "I'm the 5-foot-10 I don't worry about my weight. I figure in my life I've lost about 500 pounds. "I just have bad habits. I like potato chips, rench fries and cold beer, in that order- I went on the Scarsdale Diet once. I lost seven pounds in seven days and I was hitting the ball 140 yards.

So I went back to my old, bad habits." at 2. f.M. interment get into trouble. This is not a knock against Ray Grebey, but the trouble was Dulaney Valley Memorial loved husband of Mary (nee Evano), devoted father of David W. and Gary tery.

The commissioner Christian Wake Serv Its rolling hills, undulating greens and mountainous terrain often can cause problems for LPGA golfers used to playing considerably flatter courses.

But yesterday, Stacy an eight-year LPGA veteran had a smile on her face. A big one. And Speidel was the reason why. "This course is fun," said Stacy, who shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a 1-shot lead over Kathy Postlewait after the first round of the $125,000 West Virginia LPGA Classic. "You've got to have a sense of humor on this course," Stacy said.

"Why? Because there are a few holes on this course where you have to stand on your nose to play." Stacy, of course, was referring to the sidehill, uphill and downhill lies that are frequent on Speidel's undulating turf. Stacy is a West Virginia tournament veteran, having played in all seven previous Wheeling tournaments. She and Postlewait are among just four golfers who have played in every Wheeling tournament, and Postlewait thinks that's more than just a coincidence. Vermeil raps Eagles after poor effort WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) It's one thing to lose an exhibition game, but for Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil, not playing well is much worse.

"To me, it's not as disappointing to lose in the pre-season as it is to play poorly," Vermeil said yesterday, a day after the Eagles dropped their National Football League pre-season opener in Houston to the Oilers 13-10. "Collectively, there were some good things, but overall, I expected us to play better than we did," he said. "There are probably reasons, but I'm only interested in the end result The Eagles lost two fumbles, were intercepted once and were called for 15 penalties in the lackluster effort. "It reminded me of a team playing in six inches of mud," said offensive line coach Jerry Wampfler," thinking back on the game in Houston. The Eagles returned to their West Chester State College training camp Friday for an afternoon of meetings and a light half-hour workout.

Vermeil, who said last week that training camp was going very well, said such confidence may have led to some of the problems against the Oilers. "For three weeks, and for some guys four weeks, all we've done is praise them and tell them what a great job they've been doing," Vermeil said, adding that compliments can lead players to think they "don't have to concentrate and play hard." Wampfler said he was disappointed in some of the veterans. "I expected them to play better," he said. "Obviously, our guard situation is not solid." Vermeil did praise the play of fullback Perry Harrington, backup quarter husband of Louise Lemmon Bowers, fathe simply has to be the commissioner. row), devoted father of David W.
