McKinley continues to improve. He took a drive yesterday with Mrs. McKinley and seems to have fully conquered the attack of illness. His physician says that rest and quiet are only necessary to his iill recovery. The orders are that he shall not resume the receiving of visitors as he did before the attack be- now and the time of his leaving Washington, and that for the remainder of this week he shall not see any one but the members of his house- loid and his secretaries.

The physician has also advised Major McKiiiley against the exposure incident the farewell reception arranged for Washington's birthday, next Monday. Hence reception will have to be abandoned. PORTLAND, Feb. William Bichards and Hosea Able, both young have been jailed here for highway atobbery. They are charged with ho-d ing up Charles Kauffman, but secured but a penknife. Michael Heil, a farmer living near the city, has surrendered himself to the police, saying he is probably the person who is responsible for the killing of Andrew Manley, a colored man who was found dead in his wagon in the outskirts of the city with a gunshot wound. Heil says he has been annoyed by thieves for a' long time, and had arranged a system of burglar alarms on his barn. At 3 o'clock in the morning he was awakened by the alarm and rushing out to his barn saw a man coming out of it. The man ran and Heil shot at him.

MEASLES AMONG ORPHANS, A Thousand Children Exposed and Over Hundred Cases Reported, XENIA, Feb. is an epidemic of measles at the Ohio soldiers' and sailors' orphans' home, there being over 100 cases and the hospital is overflowing. One thousand children are in the home, folly half of whom have been exposed.

There have no deaths at the home and the authorities claim that the disease is not in a virulent form, but fear that it may attack several hundred of the children before it is controlled. The disease was introduced by a boy, a new inmate of the institution. Not In His Class. A teacher in one of the public schools of Chicago thought to amuse her pupils by reading the story of "Little Lord Fauntleroy." Chadworth went out from the Ohio end of the bridge with a wrench to tighten some bolts on the crowu of the span. When half way out and about 50 feet above the water his toe struck a projecting bolt. He tripped over it and. after a- desperate attempt to regain his headlong in the river. Several workmen saw him fall and boats were hurried out to the spot where he struck tlie water, but his body was swept under a-barge and has not been recovered.

Feb. B. Kent, a man who abwat a week ago walked into the sheriff's office and surrendered himself, saying that he thought he had committed a murder in Indiana-a few years ago, will be taken back to the scene of his crime to stand trial for his life. Sheriff Johnson, at the request of Kent, communicated with the authorities of Centerton, aud received a telegram saying Kent was wanted at that place for the murder of Noah Kii.g, and that an officer had left there to take him back. Kent, who is evidently demented, says the crime was committed on the night of Nov.

5, 1894, on a farm three miles west of Centerton. Before the vote was recorded all the Republicans changed to Kyle. It was when the changes began that conf asion reigned. Olson of Lawrence tried to create a stampede for Goody- koutz.

CANEA, Feb. admirals commanding the foreign men-of-war here demanded of the Greek consul that he remove the Greek flags from the consulate. The Greek consul acceded under protest, declaring that the admirals were not competent to deal with the question. The British and Italian torpedo boats stopped the Greek ironclad Hydra, which was conveying provisions to the Greek camp. Colonel Vassos, commander of the Greek forces, has decided to attack and occupy several strategic points. The insurgents have intimated to the consuls that they propose to attack Halepa in the near future.

The insurgents who are operating with the Greek forces have been observed advancing nearer the town. Turkish volunteers and refugees who have been brought here by a transport state that a hundred Mussulmans have been killed at Sarakinos and Selinos and that an equal number have been killed in the surrounding country. Among the killed at Sarakinos were 20 women mid 61 children. Cleveland. WASHINGTON, Feb. 19. The las evening reception of this administra tion was given by the President a Mrs. Cleveland at the White House las night.

It was held for the benefit the general public. The crowd was a record-breaking one in point of attendance, it being estimated that between 5,000 and 6,000 persons passed in line dnring the two hours of the reception.
