TV jTT Movies FRIDAY, JULY 25, 1980 C5 THE EVENING SUN Lana Turner glows after kicking bottle 'Countdown' features Kirk and carrier and hypoglycemia. I had no idea how sick I was." "Now I look back at it all in amazement," continued the 60-year-old actress, who hasn't looked this terrific in 10 years. "Nowadays I'm up at 8. When I was drinking, I used to force myself to sleep till 3 in the afternoon, because I didn't want to face myself, let alone life. My new motto is 'That Was Now Is.

I still have a bar in my home and make drinks for my friends all the time; and it doesn't make me feel like I'm going up the wall!" By Aaron Gold Knight-Ridder "I'm just a walking miracle!" exclaimed a jubilant and glowing Lana Turner. "I have my health back, and I'm really quite proud. I stopped drinking cold turkey. When I arrived home April 15, after touring in 'Murder Among I was half dead. I have God to thank He let me go as far as I could.

I went to a new doctor an herbalist, and when I first saw him I was down to 95 pounds. My face looked gray-white, like a skull, and I was flirting with cirrhosis Lou Codrona AMUSEMENTS AMUSEMENTS AMUSEMENTS Today's Movies APEX-U0 $. "I knew we had soniething good here, because a few years ago, another son I forget his name came to me with the idea of doing 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's and we know what happened to that. I will, however, never forgive the boy because he didn't give me a part in the film." The elder Douglas has no illusions about his participation in the film. "The Nimitz is the star.

We all have equal roles, and there are dozens of actors who could have played the captain. Fortunately, however, the producer thought of me." Enlistments are up since production began on the movie. The Navy readily admits that the film has something to do with that, and Douglas pere said he was very pleased when he heard that. The movie, said one reporter, sounds like the new Republican platform. It is and pro-military spending.

It may also be pro-nuclear power, so how do you, a liberal, support the film and its ideas? "Those thoughts were not in our minds," Douglas said. "We weren't thinking from a political point of view. The film is patriotic in nature, but I am glad of that because the word has become old fashioned. Beyond that, however, we only wanted to make an exciting film, and I think we have." THE INEVITABLE question arose, and it was put to Peter: "The Final Countdown" is a commercial film, and it does make use of military equipment. How much did the Navy accommodate the filmmakers? "All our filming was done at the convenience of the Navy," Peter said.

"The Nimitz followed it's daily schedule, and we went along. We worked around the Nimitz crew, doing the film as they went about their regular duties. "There are 14 professionals in the film. The rest are members of the crew. AMUSEMENTS AMUSEMENTS AMUSEMENTS CARLTON 1201 Oyndall Ave.

Friday the CINEMA lll-Froitburg Cheech 13th (R) 7.00, 9.00 WMmk- I Chong IR) 7:20.9:15 THE USS NIMITZ is the undisputed star of "The Final Countdown," a fact that is freely admitted by the producers of the film and by Navy personnel who are admittedly pleased with the publicity they have gained by allowing the nuclear carrier to be used in the film. They are, in fact, so satisfied with the arrangement that they agreed to act as co-hosts to a small army of news and television people who were given a tour of the Nimitz at Norfolk, one that was followed by an F-14 demonstration that more than compensated for the hot, soggy air that seemed that much hotter and that much soggier on the steel deck of the carrier.

Earlier, at a mass meeting between Navy, press, stars and producers of the film. Commander James Lois, speaking for the Navy, said that at $2 billion, the cost of the Nimitz, "The Final Countdown" was filmed on the "most expensive set the movie industry has ever known." Maybe, so how did the Navy find itself playing host to a movie company? "We have been accused of manipulating world events to keep the Nimitz in the limelight," the commander said, "but disabuse yourself from that notion. The movie producers came to us, and I am very pleased with the image that is presented in the movie. It will help us in recruiting and retention. "The Nimitz is the most sophisticated and complicated piece of machinery ever put together by man.

It gives us superiority over Russia. It is the one area in which we have command," he said. The movie was produced by Peter Vincent Douglas, the 24-year-old son of Kirk Douglas, one of the actors in the film. Young Douglas was a production assistant at Columbia Pictures before he went to work for his father's company, Bryna Productions. Three years ago he bought "Final Countdown." WHEN HE took the story to Kirk, father informed son that he couldn't begin to make the film unless he had an aircraft carrier, planes and $10 or $12 million.

"I thought I had taught him lesson Number One," Kirk said, "but he came back a year later, saying he had the carrier, the planes and the backing, and could we get on with the film?" Peter had already taken the story to "every studio," all of which turned him MONOCACY-Taneytown-Bleck Hole (PG) Sleeping Beauty (G) opens 1.30 NORTH POINT-Norrh Point Zombles (R) Beyond the Door (R) PULASKI-Pulaskl 13th (R) Prophecy (R) RITCHIE Glen Burnle Black Hole (PG) Sleeping Beauty (Gl SUPER 170-Odenton-Zombies (Rl 10.30 Tourist Trap (PG) TIMONIUM Zombies (R) Ruby (R) opens 8 p.m. 235-Californla, Md. Check theater or advertising and because we couldn't pay them, we contributed the money they would have been paid to the health and welfare fund of the Nimitz. "We really did pay for services received. They sent us a bill for $4,500 for every hour the planes were in the air," he said. The plot of "The Final Countdown" is "Twilight Zone" in nature.

The carrier, overwhelmed by a tornado-like swirl, is transported back in time to 1941, the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The carrier, with its jet fighters, is near Hawaii. It could easily blast the Japanese strike force out of the air, but the captain is not sure he should take that course. It might change history, but to what purpose? The movie will open here soon.
