On Movies and Plays ay THE EVENING SUN, BALTIMORE, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1975 PAGE 5 iCCENT- I Things To Do See Hear 'Operation' Was Unlikely But True, Bottoms Says The Week's Theater Lou Cedrone maybe even necessary if the total is worth the parts, but "Le Secret" goes its inevitable way, grimly and without much surprise until the film ends as you expect it will. Marlene Jobert and Phil-lipe Noiret are the writer and his wife in the film which is showing at the Playhouse. There are subtitles. The film has that much in its favor. It has, in truth, much more, but it is so down, so contrived and so strained at times, the total effect is one of exasperation.

"Before I met Anne, "I always thought escrow was a crooked bird." Great musical news: Burt Bacharach and Hal David have written 10 new songs for an upcoming Motown album sung by Stephanie Mills, star of the Broadway musical "The Wiz." Two great songs on the album "I Took My Strength From You" and "If You Can Learn How To Cry." Stephanie apparently is the new Dionne Warwicke for the Bacharach-David team. Dionne who sprung to fame on Bacharach-David tunes is currently suing the pair for $5 million, alleging they didn't write an album for her. AMUSEMENTS ONE OF THE least likely things about "Operation Daybreak," the film based on the World War II assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, is the character who betrays all the others involved in the assassination. I thought it unlikely that England would use so obvious a risk in so delicate a mission, but Timothy Bottoms says that was the way it was. Bottoms, who plays one of the men parachuted into the country by the British, was here a few days ago and said there was little preparation for the mission.

"The men were trained for only two weeks, and the British knew that one of them, the traitor, was a risk, but Churchill felt the mssion was necessary, that something had to be done to lift the morale of the allies." The producers of the film might have done better had they emphasized this facet of the operation, the callousness on the part of Churchill and the others responsible for the mission, one that resulted in the erasure of the village of Lidice from the map. They did not, however, and the movie is only one more downer, a film in which all the principals are finally destroyed, as they were in real life, sacrificed by others whose lives were not on the line. BOTTOMS, a very pleasant young man, is one of four brothers, three of whom are in films. They are Timothy, 24, Joseph, 20 and Sam, 19. The fourth is Ben, 14, and he, too, is planning to become an actor.

Is this a disadvantage, having so many Bottoms boys around? Is there confusion among the casting directors and producers? "No, there is no confusion, and there is really no compe-titon," said Timothy. Knowing that if you scratch an actor, you frequently find a broken home, I asked Timothy if his parents are divorced. "No," he said. "They were separated for a time, but they are back to- AMUSEMENTS Superior!" KEVIN THOMAS A Times gether now, and the marriage is stronger than ever. He is a painter, and she is a teacher." With Timothy was his wife, Alicia.

They have been married for four months, and she was with him when he did the film in Czechslovakia. The people there, she said, are very guarded, seldom smile and will not engage in conversation with outsiders. It also was difficult, she said, to find living quarters. "They are just not prepared to handle tourists, and when we finally found an apartment, a tiny one, it cost us $1,000 a week." 0 SPEAKING OF DOWNERS, we are being inundated with them on the screen, the latest, "Le Secret," a French film in which Jean-Louis Trin-tinant is pursued by government agents after he escapes the men who are torturing him. We eventually learn, after much dawdling, that he was being held prisoner by government agents because he has accidentally learned of something in which they are involved.

It is apparent from the start that we are never going to know what this information is, but this is one of the least annoying things about the film. When the prisoner escapes, he is befriended by a writer and his wife who live in an abandoned castle. They are nice, pleasant people, but the film goes nowhere until all three leave the place, and then you wonder why the woman has to go along since she is certain the escapee is insane. "Le Secret" has the kind of plot that doesn't stand up to close inspection. Like a Hitchcock movie, it is alive with red herring and short on logic.
