Leonard Dlavs Big Eddie This Afternoon comedy that can scarcely be By Lee Winfrey New York (KM) -The only thing large about "Big Eddie" is growing wonder as to why it is still on the air. "Big Eddie" wastes two talented people (stars Sheldon Leonard and Sheree North) and waters down a good idea (the Broadway sporting life types first well-described by Damon Runvon). The result is a situation Smith, supposedly a gambler who has now gone straight as the owner of a sports arena. Probably he was more interesting when he was crooked. Ts'ow he is as dull as a reformed drunk.

Ms. North plays Honey, a dancer who used to do a strip tease in which doves flew away with her clothes. Big Eddie married her six months endured for a full half-hour. This thing makes "Gilligan's Island" look good. There is no good Feason why this CBS series couldn't have worked.

Ah, for a series that would have shown Big Eddie and Honey in their salad days, back when they could have passed as supporting players in Runyon's "Guys and Dolls." Now alas, we see them slumped into dull domesticity, just another unbelievable sitcom family, wrestling ineptly with piffling problems and pennywhistle crises. Big Eddie and Honey got married so that he could get custody of Ginger, his granddaughter.

Quinn Cummings, who plays this role, is a child actress pleasant to watch. But the character of Ginger is the basic thing wrong with this show. In two of the four episodes I've endured, Ginger was a major figure in the plot. The whole show got dragged down to her age level. It was like watching Leonard and North performing on their knees.

"Little House on the Praire" owns the TV patent on lovable daughters. "Big Eddie" is never going to get anywhere playing doll house. Still, in little Ginger's defense, it must be said that recent episode of 'Big Eddie was one of the sorriest 30 minutes of sitcom that I have ever seen, and she wasn't even at the scene of the accident. No Particular Help Big Eddie has a cook, Monty (Bang Bang) Valentine, who's no particular help in the proceedings. In the said episode he brought home a girl friend, a waitress with the improbable name of Violet Clabber, and talked Big Eddie into hiring her.

Violet's function was to spend a half-hour serving eggs into Big Eddie's lap, shrinking his cashmere sweater and melting plastic dishes, crying "Land o' Goshen" as each new disaster occurred. I sat there scarcely able to believe how dull she was as a character, and how empty, contrived and nitwit was this plot. It was as though an economist had undertaken to write comedy, or a mortician. It was like those old stories about how a band of monkeys could write Shakespeare if you let them all bang away at typewriters long enough to hit all the lines by accident. Is that it? Are monkeys writing 'Big As soon as this show is canceled, I think I'll have someone check the Hollywood unemployment office to see if any show up in line.
