Prizes are awarded to the winners in the different divisions. The event, sponsored by the Mountain Club of Maryland, the Greater Baltimore Sierra Club, the Baltimore YMCA, the Sunpapers and area parks, is open to the public free of charge. nation that is both fluid and resoruceful. No Technical Obstacles Since he is at home in every region of the fingerboard, there are no technical obstacles to confound his natural ability. Interpretatively, he demonstrated that he was capable of a variety of musical attitudes, all within the same composition: serious, playful, quasi-sentimental, lyrical, dancing and being complementary to the robust nature of Bartok's score. The second movement, with its special touches of modality intertwined with variation form, was given a most sensitive reading. The audience reaction to Mr.

Zukerman's performance was resounding, and he was required to play an encore before he was permitted to retire. Romantic Notions In Brahms' grandiose symphony Dr. Comissiona sought to transform his orchestra into a sonorous, lusty aggregation so as to better cope with the full-blown, romantic notions of the composer. He even altered the disposition of the players on stage, placing the second violins to his immediate right, the cellos to his inside left and violas to his inside right. Dr.

Comissiona's interpretation of the symphony had a deliberate but steady flow, a respect for structure, and a rugged, honest quality. The musicians were in step with his approach and responded to his every gesture. SIDNEY LUMET and Al Pacino, who collaborated on the highly successful "Serpi-co," have reunited to produce an even better film, a jewel of a movie, an almost flawless motion picture that successfully manages to walk the line between horror and comedy. Actually, there is very little horror in the film. It is called "Dog Day Afternoon" and is based on an actual incident that took place on a summer day in Brooklyn three years ago.

You remember the story. It was on the front pages. Two men held up a bank in Brooklyn, and when plans went awry, police arrived to negotiate and hold back the crowd as robbers and hostages remained in the bank. One of the robbers made demands for things like pizza and helicopters, and when he asked that his "wife" be brought to the scene, police discovered that the "woman" was really a man, married in a gay ceremony to the robber who staged the holdup to pay for a sex-change operation for his mate. The robber also had a conventional wife and two children, something his partner in crime may or may not have known, and all this is detailed in a film that runs a little more than two hours and seems half that.

THE HUMOR IN "Dog Day" is persistent, running through the film like fine grain. It is both natural and true, and thanks to Lumet, writer Frank Pierson and Pacino, the drama is never uncomfortable, primarily because the two robbers are basically harmless people caught up in a situation they did not envision. "Dog Day Afternoon" is a movie everyone will want to see: first, because there isn't a dull moment in it and, second, because Pacino gives another and Denise Nicholas who play their wives. Poitier is an Atlanta milkman, and Cosby a factory worker who hypnotizes a noth ing fighter into thinking he is something. They then put all their money on him in a scheme to raise funds for their bankrupt lodge.

They do this in New Or leans, and the men they dupe are Kansas City Mack and Biggie Smalls, professional gamblers who do not take kindly to being had. Poitier and Cosby make their way through the film wearing outlandish costumes and play it dumb, and Miss Nicholas gives the film an equal measure of charm when she poses as a hustler. "Let's Do It Again," directed by Poitier, is not a great movie, but it is enjoyable, a most pleasant farce that will make you forget the first film in which much talent was combined to produce very little. "Let's Do It Again" is showing at area theaters. ONE WHIFF of "Whiffs" is enough.

A real stinker, the movie stars Elliott Gould and Harry Guardino as Chemical Corps guinea pigs who use their knowledge to gas an entire town and rob two banks. If there is a laugh in the film, I don't remember it, and the only interesting thing about it is that it was made. Eddie Albert, Jennifer O'Neill and Godfrey Cambridge are the other unfortunates involved in this witless, tasteless mishap. It is hopefully evaporating at area theaters. remarkable performance, perhaps his best to date; if he does not win the Academy Award for this, we can safely assume that Hollywood doesn't know a prize-winning actor when it sees one.

John Cazale is the other robber, Charles Durning is the police chief who directs the operation, James Broderick is an FBI agent, Chris Sarandon is the young man who would become a woman, and Penny Allen, Beulah Garrick and Carol Kane are some of the hostages who come to enjoy their adventure. "Dog Day Afternoon" gets a little fuzzy when the FBI man appears on the scene, but that's the worst that can be said about a film that is superior in every other area. It is a film that says, with wit and humor, something about the human condition, something about two foolish young men and the people who gathered at the scene to make sport of the incident; it is difficult, at times, to say who is more sick, the robbers or the curious. "Dog Day Afternoon" is showing at area theaters. See it.

"LET'S DO IT AGAIN" is the happy exception to the rule that a sequel is never as good as the parent film. "Let's Do It Again" is the sequel to "Uptown Saturday Night" in which Sidney Poit principal trumpeter. Bar-tock's "Violin Concerto No. 2" was performed by Pinchas Zukerman, the Israeli violinist. The portion of the program after intermission was filled with the Fourth Symphony of Brahms.

Sergiu Comissiona occupied the podium at the Lyric Theater. Bloch's seldom played composition was composed in 1955 and contains the type of musical material typical of his dramatic style. Rhythmic Vitality The trumpet part alternates fanfarelike figures and cantabile passages, and Mr. Tison performed it with rhythmic vitality and precision. Although he was the soloist, the power of his tone was kept under strict control so as to blend with the rest of the ensemble.

Especially effective were the places where long-held pitches in the low register had to be sustained in a legato manner, and with a soft dynamic level. Dr. Comissiona provided ample and vigorous support, as he did also for the violinist. Mr. Zukerman fits well into the basic theme of the "Season of the Young Soloists" being currently sponsored by the orchestra.
