Dick Van Dyke Needs Pretty Girl For Phoenix By Marilyn Beck Hollywood (NANA) Dick Van Dyke needs a gal. When he was in town tub-thumping for his December 6 NBC special with Bill Cosby, Dick outlined his problem and asked if I could help. ; , "I'm getting desperate to find a new wife," he complained. "I can't tell you how many gals I've talked to, and quite a few seemed promising. The only hitch: they didn't want to move to Phoenix." ... Dick, who's happily married, needs the new woman in his life as costar of his CBS scries, which will debut next September. "We start taping in January," he reminded me. He's getting frantic to find the perfect cinema spouse. "Like how many Mary Tyler Moores are there? I wanted Lee Grant, who loved the idea, but who didn't like the idea of filming in Arizona. Suzie Pleshette was interested, too, until she visited Phoenix and told me, 'Dick, I was raised in New York. I'm a big city girl.' " And nothing's going to convince Dick to return to Hollywood big city living again. He moved his family to Phoenix over a year ago, and told me enthusiastically, "you can't beat the life. The kids come home from school, and jump on their horses for rides into the desert. How can you beat living like mat" Suzie and Lee evidently feel it can be beat right here in smog-ville. CBS is rapping with Rose Marie about elaborating on that man-less character she's perfected during all those years on Dick' Van Dyke's and Doris Day's shows, and wrapping a special around it. Something for the gals who don't want to be all that liberated, who'd love having a fella if they could grab one. You really want to know why Columbia cut and reshot the ending of "Where's Poppa?"
