A 2iew York newspaper purchased her article and later gave her a job as Paris correspondent. For more than 25 years she viewed the European scene and interpreted it with understanding. She had a wide acquaintance with important people abroad and this enabled her to cable many exclusive dispatches to the United States. Miss Birkhead remained in Paris thru the world war. In 1927 she joined the staff of The Tribune.

She wrote of CoL Lindbergh's landing after his sensational solo flight from New York. Later she covered such important news events as the wedding cf the duke of Windsor and the British coronation ceremonies. Bared French UnpreparedneM. Jler knowledge enabled her to analyze with great accuracy the damage that had been done to French unity and preparedness for war by the radical government under Leon Blum. Early in 1939 she drew attention to the fact that France was woefully unprepared for war and was hoping it would not come until its army was ready.

This has since been abundantly borne out by events. When the present war started Miss Birkhead remained in Paris. She was still there when the Nazis swept over the French troops and occupied the city. It was her avowed intention to continue reporting the war as long as it lasted. She decided to leave only when she became ill and the Germans tightened regulations so lar that it was difficult for her to give accurate accounts of what was going on.

Seised as Spy Suspect. Her trip to America was in Itself an epic. She and a physician and an author all left Paris in the doctor's car after getting as much gasoline as they could from the supply rationed to the American" embassy. A few more gallons were picked up from German truck drivers, who accepted champagne in return. In the city of Poitiers the travelers were arrested by the Germans as suspected British spies.

Five days later, having proved their innocence, they were permitted to cross Spain and go into Portugal. In Lisbon, Miss Birkhead obtained a passage to America on the steamer Excamblon. She arrived in New York Aug. 16, 1940. Surviving is her mother.
