5:00 Don't look now, but David Letter-man's late nightearly morning humortalk show is finally going to make it to Baltimore. The reason you shouldn't look now is that it won't be on until Sept. 10 when Channel 2 (WMAR) picks up the highly acclaimed hour from NBC. Channel 2 has had to revamp its late night lineup because of the demise of Alan Thicke, last year's new Johnny Carson, whose poorly produced show was folded by its backers over the summer. "Benson," new in the syndication market, will go in at 11:30, followed by the show now in that slot, "WKRP in Cincinnati" with Letterman coming on at 12:30 a.m.

Obviously, one alternative for WMAR was to return to Johnny Carson whom they dumped for Thicke a year ago. But general manager Arnie Kleiner chose not to, leaving Johnny for Channel 45 (WBFF). "Carson doesn't do anything for us at 11:30," Kleiner said. "We'd be interested if we could start him at midnight, but NBC won't let us." Overall, though, NBC is doing pretty well by Channel 2. It's getting another hour a day of its programming on the air in Letterman, and has already gotten another with SADIE My main form of exercise 9:00 Newscope.

For the last couple of years, Channel 54 has had excellent old movies in the morning and late afternoon, but has depended on religious programming and a financial news service to fill up the bulk of its day. But starting Sept. 3, it's going to look like a real independent station. Which means it will be full of reruns. At 2 p.m, the old Burns and Allen show will go in, followed at 2:30 by a package of "B.J.

and the Bear" and "Lobo." At 3:30, "Batman" shows up, at 4 o'clock, "The Incredible Hulk," followed by "CHiPs" and "Starsky and Hutch" before the signals get scrambled at 7 o'clock. The late afternoon movie will move to noon where it will occasionally be allowed to run over its two-hour slot when the film demands the time. Mark Salditch, the station's general manager, said the changeover will be accompanied by a massive promotion campaign aimed in part to make people aware that Channel 54 is not entirely a subscription operation. "Some people even think we're a cable channel," he said, going on to throw down the gauntlet to Channel 45. "In television, this is the era of the independent station and Baltimore doesn't have a good indy station.

These shows we're putting on have never been syndicated in this market before. There is all this good product out there just waiting for someone to put it on the air." This is a big step toward legitimacy for Channel 54, and it is clear that the station is looking to the day when cable moves into Baltimore and Super TV no longer exists, allowing a move into the evening hours. The nationwide trend has been toward the eventual demise of subscription channels when faced with cable competition. "Santa Barbara," the new soap opera that runs 3 to 4 p.m., a time slot that WMAR had been using for a local product. Actually, the demise of another national show will cause some changes in Channel 2's late afternoon, though they won't be that apparent to the viewer.

"Newscope," the feature-oriented, locally anchored 5 p.m. half hour is also going out of business as a national entity, but Channel 2 has bought the name and will continue producing the program locally, albeit aided by canned features from a TV wire service. "We like the show, we like the concept," Kleiner said of the decision to stick with "Newscope" even though it has hardly sent the Neilsen meters into shoulder rolls. "For a news show in a new news time period, it is doing fairly well. A year is not a very long time to establish a new time period." Undoubtedly also affecting the decision is the rapidly escalating price of syndicated programming which may or may not work.

Channel 2, for example, currently has some very expensive episodes of "Laverne and Shirley" sitting on the shelf. "It has always been my belief that the least expensive product is a good news program and the most expensive is a bad news program," Kleiner said. "Even the best of the syndicated products 'Barney 'The Three's Company' are going to have their run and then they're going to go away. A good news program can last forever." The changes at Channel 2 are nothing compared to big moves that are being made by Channel 54 (WNUV), the station that is available during the day to everyone, but sends out a scrambled signal for Su- 5:30 CD 01 Rated.
