i i WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1981 B5 THE EVENING SUN 'On the Right Track' comes close but still finishes out of the money Ml rtB' Lou Cedrone who is far more nimL.e than Norris 1 when jumping, kicking, slapping and; chopping at his enemies. There is a lot of that in the movie, far more than there was in "An Eye for an Eye," last week's Norris release, so; those who cheer this sort of thing will enjoy this much of the film. The rest is, well, incredibly Some of the movie seems to have been done on location in the city of the titled but all of it seems have been recorded in! Honk Kong, home of the company that; produced the film. All the actors sound like Shelley Ber- man doing imitations of Edward G.l Robinson, and the dubbing seems to! have been done by Dopey, Happy and Doc. Beyond that, none of the actors-seems to have been speaking English, which probably made it tough for the dwarfs.

The movie is funny. There aren't this; many laughs in "Cannonball Run." dog, for instance, one that is supposed to; be barking, runs along with his tongue-protruding, water on his mind, and ev-! ery slap, every chop, is accompanied by a thunderclap. "Slaughter in San Francisco," whose funniest moments are achieved when one of the actors, someone else speaking-for him, attempts an Irish accent, is available at area theaters. Norris should sue. area theaters, and the children seem to enjoy it, especially when Coleman is being chased about the station.

Parents might, however, approach with caution. The language is adult, and so is some of the conversation. 0 CHUCK NORRIS is barely visible in "Slaughter in San Francisco," but I don't imagine he is unhappy about that. If fact, if I were he, I'd ask to have all of me removed from the film because it isn't going to do the Norris career any good. The film looks as though it were made some time before Norris succeeded Bruce Lee as king of the martial arts films.

In it, he is the lead villain, a crime chieftain who is responsible for a robbery and the death of a policeman, deeds he would pin on an innocent bystander. Working to right all these wrongs is THERE IS a promising therhe that is floating around in "On the Right Track," one that never really takes form. It threatens to, now and then, but it never really materializes, and when young Gary Coleman has had his last say, the film has amounted to little, serving as no more than a showcase for the star of "Diff'rent Strokes," the television series. Small for his age (he's 13), Coleman plays a 10-year-old in the movie, a street waif who lives in Chicago's Union Station, in a pay locker where he is quite happy until the Juvenile Services Department hears about the arrangement. Represented by a young man who seems to be half hood and half nice guy, the department intends to place the boy in a foster home, until it is discovered that the kid has a gift for picking triples at the racetrack.

When the information travels, everyone wants to adopt the boy, including the man from Juvenile Services, who, meantime, has fallen in love with a coin-changer in the station's arcade. She isn't just any coin-changer. She's pretty, maybe even gorgeous and is really an actress, waiting for the big break. She and the young man fall in love, they fall in love with the boy, others fall in love with the kid's ability to pick winners, and standing on the sidelines are the mayor, a bag lady, a locker room attendant and the owner of the station's pizza parlor. If all that sounds like too much, it is.

"On the Right Track" is too busy for its own good. It travels in too many directions and loses its way in all. When the running time is ended, all we have is a film that allows young Coleman the chance to show his stuff, which he does with considerably less mugging than he does in the series. He is cute. He could steal a film from Mickey Rooney, but the movie would have been much more substantial had the three writers done more with the station as a womb substitute.

The kid won't go out on the street. He choses to stay "down there" in the station. "I feel happy down here. I don't like it up there," he says. Later, when the girl and her boyfriend take the boy's hands and lead him up to the stairs to "the outside," he wants some assurance that he will be able to cope.

"It's rotten up there," the girl says, "but it's rotten down here, too." That isn't verbatum, but it's close enough, and it's a pity the authors didn't make this the film's principal theme. As is, it is only one of many, and they all seem to be working against each other; "On the Right Track" is a movie that aches for clarity and direction. Lisa Eilbacher is the girl, Michael Lembeck is the young man, Maureen Stapleton is the bag woman, Bill Russell is the locker room attendant, Herb Edelman is the pizza man and Norman Fell is the mayor. They're all nice people, good actors, but they, like Coleman, don't seem to know which way they are going.
