CALL EARLY IN THE WEEK TO PLACE YOUR SUN CLASSIFIED AD 539-7700 Deaths aries Zelda Miller, 61, Jewish Charities director's aide Zelda Miller, administrative assistant to the professional campaign director of the Associated Jewish Charities and Welfare Fund, died yesterday after an illness of six weeks at her home in the EmbasI sy Apartments, 3809 Clark's Lane. Services for Miss Miller, who was 61, will be held at noon tomorrow at the Levinson funeral establishment, 6010 Reisterstown Road. She was with Jewish Charities for 21 years, and earlier worked in Baltimore as an executive secretary at a luggage company and a clothing company. A native of Cumberland, and a graduate of Allegheny High School, Miss Miller moved to Baltimore with her family in 1939. At her final illness, she was a member of the board of the Friends of the Enoch Pratt Library and a weekly reader for the blind on the Radio Reading Service.

She was also a former vice president and member of the board of the Career Group of the Oheb Shalom Congregation. Miss Miller's survivors include two brothers, Abraham Miller, of Baltimore and Herman Miller, of Cumberland; a sister, Helen Lyon, of Sarasota, and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Garfield Swift, 74, singer and teacher Garfield Swift, a baritone who sang and taught in Baltimore, has died at his home in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. A memorial service for Mr. Swift, who was 74, will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rock Creek Church Road in the Rock Creek Cemetery in northwest Washington. Mr. Swift died after a long bout with cancer and emphysema. He had lived in Blue Ridge Summit for 11 years.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he performed regularly with the Baltimore Symphony and the Baltimore Civic Opera. A member of the board of the opera company for many years, he also served as a judge in vocal competitions. During much of the period that he sang in Baltimore, he also headed the voice department at the Eugene Martinet School of Music. Never a resident of Baltimore, Mr. Swift lived for much of his life in New York, Washington and the Netherlands.

After retiring from regular performances and moving to Pennsylvania, he continued to teach and also operated an opera-dinner theater. In addition to teaching at the Baltimore school and in his own studios, he also served as adjunct professor of music at Montgomery College in Rockville from 1969 to 1981. Earlier, he taught at the Catholic University and Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington. A native of New York, he was raised abroad by an uncle who was an admiral in the Navy. He became fluent in foreign languages at an early age and majored in languages at Northwestern University.

He left Northwestern before graduation to take voice lessons with Estelle Liebling in New York. He became friendly with another student, Beverly Sills, now the director of the New York City Opera. In addition to his performances in Baltimore, he sang with such groups as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio City Music Hall Symphony, the National Symphony in Washington, and several opera companies in New York and Washington. He i is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Ross Thompson; four sons, Theodore Noyes Swift, Justin Ransom Swift 2nd, and William Byrne Swift 3rd, all of Washington, and G. Christian Swift of Cleveland, and five grandchildren.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to a fund established in his name at the New York City Opera. Walter E. Stanzel, 55, sales engineer Walter E. Stanzel, a sales engineer for a materials-handling equipment dealer, died Tuesday after a suffering heart attack at his home in Timonium. Services for Mr.

Stanzel, who was 55, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Lemmon- Lemmon-Mitchell-Wiedefeld funeral establishment, 10 West Padonia Road in Timonium. For the past 20 years, he worked for the Paul Werres Co. in Rockville. Earlier, he had done similar work in Greene, N.Y., for the Raymond a materials-handling equipment manufacturer.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., he was a graduate of Syracuse University. He served in the Navy at the end of World War II. He was a member of the Mount Moriah Lodge of the Masons, the Scottish Rite and Boumi Temple and its director's staff. In the early 1970s, Mr. Stanzel sailed his 29-foot boat, the Sea Adler, in races in the Annapolis area.

He was a former president of the Royal Golf Club, in which he was active nearly 10 years. In addition, he played the violin. About three years ago, he appeared as the fiddler in "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Notre Dame Preparatory School. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Mae MacDowall; three sons, Mark E. Stanzel, of Ithaca, N.Y., Craig Stanzel, of Hartford, and Scott Stanzel, of Baltimore, and a daughter, Kris Stanzel, of Towson.

Rev. A. Leo Abendschoen, at 55 The Rev. A. Leo Abendschoen, pastor of the Church of the Annunciation since the parish was started, died Tuesday at Franklin Square Hospital after suffering a heart attack.

A mass of Christian burial for Father Abendschoen, who was 55, will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 5212 McCormick Ave. in Rosedale. After his ordination in 1952, he served as assistant pastor at St. Jane Frances Church in Riviera Beach.

In 1966, he was transferred to Sacred Heart Church in Glyndon, where he served as assistant pastor until he became pastor of the Church of the Annunciation in 1968. From 1961 until 1967, Father Abendschoen served as athletic director for the Catholic Youth Organization. Several years ago, he was elected to serve on the Clergy Personnel Board, and this fall was elected to serve again on the archdiocesan board. A native of Baltimore, he was educated at St. Dominic's and St.

Martin's schools before attending St. Charles College and St. Mary's Seminary. He is survived by his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Abendschoen; a brother, George Abendschoen; a sister, Betty Thomas, and several nieces and nephews. All are of Catonsville.

Lorraine Rice, 71, retired clerical worker Lorraine Rice, a retired clerical worker, died yesterday after a long illness at Memorial Hospital in Easton. A memorial service for Mrs. Rice, who was 71 and had lived in Queenstown since 1945, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Barton Brothers funeral establishment in Queenstown. She retired nearly 20 years ago after working at Wye Plantation and a number of businesses in the Queenstown area since moving there.

Earlier, she worked during World War II for the Office of Price Administration in Baltimore. The former Lorraine Groff was born in Coatesville, but moved to Baltimore as a child with her family. She is survived by her husband, Wilmot Rice, a retired construction worker. The family suggested that any memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army. ABENDSCHOEN, Rev.
