after reading an advance copy. THE WIFE'S SECRET. By Mrs. Ax S. Stephens.

Published by flB. PETERSON Si BROTHERS, Philadelphia. We have read the advance sheets of Mrs. Ann S. Stephens's new book, "The Wife's Secret," and can promise her admirers a characteristic treat.

The story is one of domestic life, the scene being laid mainiyin the vicinity of New York. The various persons who have their part in the narrative are strongly presented, particularly the difierent members of the Bently and Hart families. The character of Michael urst is also described with almost painful force. We wiil not weaken the interest of any reader by sketching the plot, but will simply state that no lover of the exciting in romance can fail to be eager to unravel its intricacies after reading the first few pages. It is for sale by HENRY TAYLOR, Sun Iron Building, Baltimore; JOE SHI LLINUT ON, Washington, and by all other Booksellers and News Agents everywhere, and is published at the Cheapest Book House in the world to buy or send for a stock of books, which is at T.

J. A. Myers, Secretary. itN 03" "LEAH THE FORSAKEN." MRS. D.

P. BOWERS AS LEAH. From the Evening Transcript Editorial. Bowers's personation of Leah the Forsaken, las-t night, as a forcible development of character, and an illustration of the grace and sway of genius when refined by art, will take rank among the most successful traditions of this time-honored home of the drama. No more effective instance of the comprehensive power of her art, or of its keen intellectual perception, could well be desired than is furnished in the passionate earnestness and the elaborate skill which marked her first performance of Leah on this occasion.

If her coup a essai was so fraught with true cramatic instincts, and proved so brilliant in its natural coloring, what may we not expect from her future performances, now that siie has been instructed by experience in the sympathetic points of the part? The audience a densely crowded one was en rapport with the artiste, and acknowledged with fervid frequency the intense power and the wild grace of her portraiture. Thrice during the performance she was spontaneously summoned by the auditors in front of the curtain, and honored with plaudits, the impulse, and the approving motives of which were unmistakably honest. The character of Leah is, in its varying passions and its sudden transitions letween those controlling emotions of woman's nature love and pride quite stronglv drawn; yet we cannot help believing that it has lost in translation many of the beauties with which it is adorned in the oiiginal German, and that its effeit rests less upon its intrinsic power than upon the ability of the actress to claim for its suggestive sentiment the sympathy of an auditor. In this respect both manager and dramatist have ample cause to congratulate themselves upon Mrs. Bowers' assumption of the part here.

Her unsurpassed skill, and, above all, Ler intellectual appreciation of the true in art, lent to the rerson ition a picturesquesness of efiect, a womanly fervor of spirit, and a wierd-like force to which the author's ideal could lay but little claim. THIS (WEDNESDAY) EVENING, For the Last Time but Three. AT HOLLIDAY STREET THEATRE. It iYTO THE EDITORS OF THE BALT1-LrJ MORE SUN. Gentlemen: As I am sure you do not intend to do injustice to any one in your notices of the local events which c-ccur in the city, and as the notices in your local columns of Monday and Tuesday last, iu reference to the appointments by the Police Commissioners, do ereat injustice to the Major of the city, you will admit that it is both right and proper that the public should be correctly informed upon the subject.

In your paper of Monday it is statod that the Mayor changed his opinion, and instead of voting for Mr. Gardner, voted for Mr. Carmichael. This is incorrect. Notwithstanding the efforts of the friends of Mr.

Gardner to secure the favor of the Mfij or in his appointment, he continued from first to lastto favor the appointment of Mr. Carmichael. In Tuesday's paper it is stated that when the Beard of Police Commissioners assembled the Mayor a list of the names of persons whom he desired should be appointed. This is not correct. I know personally that the Mayor did not prepare a list of the names of persons whose appointment he desired, but voted with the majority of the Board for the nominees of the Marshal ana Deputy Marshal.

The facts, as I have stated them, are true, and it is right and proper that the people should know them. lt; ONE WHO KNOWS. ry-gNOTiOE The JOURNEYMEN BRICK-LLSf LAYERS OF BALTIMORE are cordially invited to attend a meeting at Rechahite Hall, on This (Wednesday) evening, ieth at 8 o'clock, to join the Society.
