Thus the gamble has been made that non, with a little bullpen help from Schmitz, Red Sox into genuine pennant contenders. They also regained Tommy Umphlett in the deal. Umphlett is a light hitting swiftie who plays the outfield real well. "The Red Sox really got something in Vernon," Woodling mused during his visit to the Sportsmen's Show. "Mickey just produces base hits in a steady stream.

There isn't a more consistent hitter in the league, and I didn't notice any signs of immediate old age in the way he played last season." Vernon's last three full season batting averages, going back in order, have been .301, .290 and .337. The last figure led the American League in batting in 1953. That year he hit. 15 home runs, had 20 in the next season and 14 last year. That's a good long ball record for a man who had to play half his games in the broad pastures of the Washington ball park.

Durable is the word for Vernon. He has played 150 or more games each of the last four years, He should be of particular value on the road, where his left-handed batting stance will fit into some of the parks better than it will at Fenway. "The Red Sox have a fine young ball club," Woodling expanded. "They have defense, and you must have a sound defense no matter how much pitching and power you have. If I had to put a finger on the reason our Cleveland team lost the pennant last season, I'd put it on defense.

Not so much that Cleveland's defense was bad, but the Yankees were so exceptional in that respect." Woodling thinks the American League race in 1956 will be corker. He rates New York, Cleveland, Boston, Chicago and Detroit as strong "It was a great one will be even better. things to go with its wouldn't be close. If ing, for example, they'd games." Landy has done it three times, once in a race with Bannister in the British Empire Games at Vancouver, B.C., on Aug. 7, 1954. The Uconns, running their season's record to 11-4, ran up a 10- point lead with five minutes 1 left to play and then barely withstood a furious finish by the home team. Two foul shots by Co-capt. Ron Bushwell with 10 seconds left in the game iced the verdict for the Uconns.

These conversions pegged the score at 82-78 and the last points were scored by Bill Allen of the Red Raiders on a basket with two seconds left. Big men for Connecticut in the upset victory were newly-eligible sophomore Bob Cherepy, who replaced Bob Malone as a starting forward and scored 21 points, and junior reserve Fran Quinn, who hooped 18 points in his best effort in a Uconn uniform. Malone Dismissed Malone, it was announced here earlier in the day, has been dismissed from the squad as a disciplinary action by Coach Hugh Greer. The statement did not say why. The 6-3 junior from Baldwin, N.Y., was the top holdover scorer from last year's team and was a regular this winter.

Not only did Cherepy tally 21 points but the lad hauled down 18 rebounds. Quinn, never much of a scorer for the Huskies previously, went wild in the second half tonight, when he scored 16 of his 18 points. He connected on six of eight shots at the rim. Another sophomore, Jim 0'- Connor, did a brilliant job as a sub for Paul Kaspar, who sat out much of the game with four personal fouls. O'Connor threw in 10 points.

But Bushwell, who showed most of old form, was the cool man at the finish as twice in the final minute he converted two free throws to keep a safe margin for his team. Raiders Take Over The game started slowly and the lead changed hands 10 times in first half before the Red Raiders shot out a 38- 34 lead at intermission. The cond half was see saw until, with 9:58 left, O'Connor put Connecticut in front to stay. The Huskies then moved out to a 70-60 lead with 5:30 to go before Coach Howard Hartman's charges barreled back led by Joe Stratton, Allen and Jack Nichols. Nichols fired 20 points while Stratton collected 17 for Colgate, which now has a 12-6 record.

The Connecticut win evened the series a 3-3. For the game the Huskies shot 30 for 76 from the floor and 22 of 29 free throws. Colgate was 30 for 87 from the floor and 20 of 24 at the charity stripe. Connecticut next meets Fordham at New York on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
