One even reached six diamonds and made it, which must have taken some snappy playing.

Four pairs thought the hand should be played at no-trump. We wouldn't think-North would feel so with the singleton club, but the successful diamond finesse made the notrump bidders look very smart. Everybody in duplicate shies away from the minor suit game as evidenced by the abova score. The game in tlie majors or a four notrump score counts more and chances are taken even with four card majors and notrump to avoid the lowly minor. I am glad to see that the diamond suits contracts fared well in match points on this deal.

It's strange how differently-each pair analyzed their holdings. The above pair didn't think their cards worth more than two notrump, while the same cards to another pair appeared to be worth seven notrump. The major suit bidders were on the right track but couldn't quite get up enough steam to reach the game level. You will note that one declarer made seven spades. I do not understand how one South succeeded in going down at three notrump.
