THK LATEST SOVE1.TT IS Visitors entering Lincoln Park at Garfield avenue have long admired the pair of bronze sphinxes placed on opposite sides of the drive-way; but their beauty and valua as works of art have been greatly diminished in the eyes of many by a late transformation. These sphinxes possessed well developed busts, and, it was said, attracted too much attention from young people. The sphinxes are the gift of Mr. Andrew McNally, of Rand, McNally and some Ihree weeks ago he caused metal breastplates to be contruct- ed and fitted on each the statues so as to conceal the voluptuous outlines of the bust. Mr.

whose residence is directly opposite the Garfleld-avenue entrance to the Park, -was asked last evening why the change had been made. He said; "Well, laat summer, you remember, when there was so many grangers in town, they would como to the Park with their wives- and sweethearts, and as soon as they saw the sphinxes would stand with open mouths and gaze at them, never having seen anything like them before. They would stand and stare and laugh, and a good many people got to talking about it. It got to be a nuisance. The city people never appeared to pay.

any particular altenlion to the sphinxes, but the country people, were not so familar with high art. Mr. Dibblee, the manufacturer of the statues, said he had invented a new style of sphinxes with less conspicuous frontal development I had him fix these cuirasses so as to fit the figures exactly. They are now in accordance with the new style which-Mr. Dibblee is TAUGHT HIM POLITESESS.

The pay-train stopped at Willow Bend to pay off the railroad hands and to liquidate claims for cattle killed on the track in thatsec- tion. A gaunt, hungry-looking granger stepped up to the smart young man who was dis- i pensing the cash in the rear end of the car. Got my name on your books, Mister?" How should I know unless you tell me your name?" "Kerrect you are. You have got the edge on me there! Well, my name is Rufus McConkey." "Yes," said the young man, referring.to his books; Mr. McConkey, IJiave got you down for a hog." Have me down for a hog, have you? Well, I'll have you down for a half an hour, and I'll be on top of you, toakin' it sorter excitin" to you if you don't revise that expression.
