Driest Since 1926 The resorts are losing holiday reservations by the dozens because of the prospect for a brown Christmas. Oldtimers in the hills say it's the driest winter since 1926. Veteran Reno skiers Ernest Bud Schoenfeld, 31, Jerry Wetzel, 35, and Hal Codding, 37, quit talking about the weather and instead, did something about it. On Rattle Snake mountain, only six miles from Reno's mid-town gambling halls, the trio has set up a high-pressure spray system. Patch of Powder Snow The spray system is moved downhill each night.

By Saturday, when the first rope tow starts running, the mountain will have a 500 to 300 foot patch of powder snow on its north face. This week-end, the drop for skiers will be only about 100 feet, but as the spraying operation continues, enough of the mountain will be covered to allow a 200 foot drop. (This method of making snow has been used in the midwest for some time. Nota-able Wisconsin examples are found at Wilmot, Lake Geneva's Majestic Hills, and Slinger. In this operation water and air are pumped thru pipes under high pressure and released thru a semi-sprinkler system as mist which freezes in the air and becomes snow when temperature is 25 degrees or less.) base.
