7 THE EVENING SUN, Wednesday, December 15, 1982 Dance Cardinal Shehan ory as innocuous and forgettable. But her dramatic solos for Claudia Ossman, who seems bound by her own legs and arms, and Leslie Mosher, who somehow holds you in suspense by barely moving at all, are wonder- ful. The last dance, "Sketch," with local composer Dan Gibson's upbeat, score, is an oversweetened closing number, performed by an overzealous company except for Stuart, who manages, by understating the choreography, to tone down the sugar content. The dance, with its brightly col-, ored sweat pants, suspenders and painter's hats, is too cute for words. and Martha Graham.

But she has edited those techniques very scrupulously, preferring to discard dangerous exercises that strain the hip or knee joints, for example. "I teach safe dancing," she'll tell you emphatically. Myers also believes in giving her audience a balanced program of serious, "heavy" dances and light, lyrical ones. But these light, cute dances are her weakness. The contrast between her seriousness and her cuteness is glaring in "Soliloquies," made up of four unrelated solo dances.

Her two lyrical solos float through the mem- DANCE, From Bl as two readers recite the poems while the dance is performed. "Death" appears in the form of a woman, danced with appropriate intensity by Leslie Mosher, her beautiful, long blond hair flowing out of a monstrous gas mask. The mask covers Mosher's face to dehumanize her character of Death. And the contrast between the ugly, black rubber mask and the attractive dancer's body and hair symbolizes the poets' contradicting feelings of death. Mosher leads her prey into the night, alternately battling or caressing them.

Myers' choreography is particularly effective at the end as Mosher slowly shuttles off her dying, by one, passing the others who continue to dance in Dlace as if sus- 1 Vo my "martyr's halo" had already considerably tarnished. Understandably my own visit to the jail and my prolonged conference with the two priest-prisoners did not go unnoticed by the reporters who knew that this group, including the three priests, had been consigned to the jail on the charge of serious violation of federal law. The next day the newspapers headlined my speedily undertaken visit to my two "lawbreaking" young priests. I believe I can take for granted that practically all the priests of the archdiocese and most of the laity understood and approved my concern, and the reason for my visit. But this was certainly not true of all.

Some thought my speedy reaction was precipitate and uncalled for; lawbreakers, particularly priest-lawbreakers, ought to be left to face the consequences of their actions; it was not the business of the Cardinal Archbishop to interfere in a case like this, etc. As always seems to happen, the critical ones were the vocal ones and commanded the attention of the press and other media. To all of them, of course, I had as my guide and as the explanation of my action the words of Christ in His great discourse on the Last Judgment: "I was in prison and you came to me." "When were you in prison and we came to you?" "As often as you did it to one of these my least brethren you did it also to me." (Matt. "From the Vatican Palace the 10th day of January, the second year of our pontificate. "Paul VI" My immediate reaction was stunned silence and utter amazement. I could not understand why this honor was being bestowed upon me. Here I was, already sixty-seven years old. It is true I was not conscious of any diminution of such powers as had been given me; but I had, in the judgment of men generally, passed the prime of my life.

I could only be filled with wonder at what was happening to me. At the same time I felt a deep emotion of gratitude gratitude to the Pope for his goodness and kindness in conferring on me this sign of his favor; gratitude, above all, to God. All during the course of my life I had occasion to thank God for His protection and guidance, for having safeguarded me from many pitfalls into which I could have stumbled so easily, and for having opened the way, as it were, before me. This latest happening seemed a culmination of His special goodness to me. I must add that, mingled with my other emotions, was a certain sense of fear that I should not prove able to live up to what would be expected of me.

Another serious work on the program is "Ward 18," an eerie dance about insanity, which makes you wonder who is crazy the patient or the doctor.

Or are we all on the edge? The choreography looks like Myers extended the body language of a para- noid into a dance of dangling marionettes with a few missing strings or broken robots that need a lube job. Myers' six dancers are in various stages of development. Not all of them have the maturity and intensity of dancers Louise Stuart and Claudia Ossman. "Ward 18" demands a pow- 1 erful physical presence that not all of them can bring to the choreography. Myers is a choreographer who feels an obligation to educate her public.

Her concert opens with a choreographed warmup, designed simply to show the audience the ex-cercises her dancers practice before each rehearsal. They had been impressed particularly by the Berrigans' open protest against war, and they had joined Father Philip's followers in and near Baltimore. Before long, this group, under the leadership of Philip Berrigan, had gone from vocal opposition to acts of violence, meant to impede the U.S. prosecution of the war in Vietnam. Some of them had forcibly entered three recruiting stations in the vicinity of Baltimore and in southern Pennsylvania, had destroyed some records, and had defaced others by pouring blood over them. Now, however, they were accused of a far more serious violation of federal law.

They were to be transferred to the Harrisburg Federal Court the following day. From the information he had been able to gather, Francis Gallagher was convinced that the forecast for the future of the two priests and their companions was not bright. I asked him to try to arrange permission for me to visit the two and talk to them that night. Not only did he arrange for the visit, he actually accompanied me and made further arrangements for a room where he and I could converse with the two priests in complete privacy. When he first met them, they still seemed bouyed up with the excitement of their arrest and the prospect of becoming "martyrs for peace." Soon, however, Francis Gallagher brought them face-to-face with the reality of their situation: the probability that they would be convicted and sentenced to prison, the harrowing experience they might well be subjected to in prison with hardened criminals, the necessity of their having proper legal advice and defense.

As we had suspected, they had not the slightest notion as to how they should go about obtaining proper legal counsel and defense. They knew no one they could turn to for help-except now to the archdiocese and to Francis Gallagher himself. Philip Berrigan would have the legal counsel and help that would be supplied to him by Father George O'Dea, the Superior General of the Josephite Fathers, but neither he nor his community had any responsibility for Wenderoth or McLaughlin. They would have to depend upon what help could be supplied to them through our own archdiocesan attorney, Francis X. Gallagher.

Realizing their own helplessness, they both very earnestly asked Francis to help them in whatever way he could. He promised them he would be present in the Federal Court in Harrisburg at the time of their arraignment and that he would give or obtain for them the best legal counsel and defense he could. Needless to say, by the time our conversation was brought to an end by the necessity for Gallagher and me to leave the jail, their imagined PARKER BROTHERS FROGGER New' Spiderman Discounf29v99 Discount Amidar R- 27.99 Star Wars Discount. g. 27.99 Double Discount 99 Network up to 129 Now Only $14 BONUS Buy 2 Get one FREE from Mattel Super Challenge Football Baseball Armor Ambush FROGS FLIES ASTRO BLAST SPACE ATTACK Also: Special Price on Lock Chase 49 1699 COLOR TV ANTENNA ACT NOW1 A PITFALL KABOOM M6.99 DONKEY KONG $27.99 FOR ATARI CHSTR UniFORfTl centers A distinctive collection of EXCLUSIVE designs Created For CHESTER by WHITTENTON BARCO NURSE MATES CHEROKEE And Introducing at CHESTER Loch Raven Plaza 828-5435 (Towton) Harundale Mall 766-9365 (Glen Burnie) Mattel Intellivision 199.99 194.99 Double Discount Rabat MFG.

Most archdiocesan difficulties which in any way involved the law fell first into the hands of Francis X. Gallagher, the archdiocesan attorney. Early one evening in January 1971, he telephoned to me that two of our young priests, Joseph Wenderoth and Neil McLaughlin, had been arrested with Father Philip Berrigan and a group of his followers and were being held in the Baltimore City Jail awaiting transfer to the Federal Court in Harrisburg, where they would face charges of having violated the federal law.

Both were apparently good young priests, still somewhat boyish in appearance and idealistic in their frame of mind.
