84 THE SUN, Tuesday. Julv 19, 1977 A new generation of animators is taking over at Disney studios 'v? 6iSfc 1 1 1 vf 4 a i lr 1 ivr ff! 4 4 -AK V'tf Burbank, Calif. is when papa takes his hands off the bicycle to see if junior can ride by himself." A Walt Disney animating director, Don Bluth, was talking about "Pete's Dragon," whose animated sequences will be the first that didn't come from the drawing boards of animators who took Disney from "Snow White" to the current "The Rescuers." Sequences involving Elliott the Dragon in the live-action musical comedy are being done entirely by young animators and artists recruited since 1971, in the studio's first animation training program since the early 1930's. "The most exciting thing for me is to see the transition, seeing the young people who didn't work under Walt," said Mr. Bluth, who worked briefly under Disney before leaving the studio for a number of years.

"They're one generation removed, but they're learning under his disciples." Wolfgang Reitherman, who directed "The Rescuers," said, "The final handoff will come with 'The Fox and the which will give them a greater opportunity and challenge. The characters in 'The Rescuers' were set by the older hands." The "Nine Old Men," as Disney called his key animators after the Supreme Court justices, are nearly gone. Remaining are Mr. Reitherman, Frank Thomas, Oliver Johnson and Eric Larsen, all in their 60's. Mr.

Reitherman said, "The rest all jumped ship, retired or died." In the early 1970's, the studio built on animation faced a crisis: Its principal animators soon would be retiring. Should the Animated sequences for "Pete's Dragon" are being worked on now. The animators are at their drawing boards 12 hours a day. seven days a week to complete the sequences in time for a Christmas release. Still, said Mr.

Pomeroy, the animators are not rushed but are allowed to take their time and work in a relaxed atmosphere. "They want quality, not quantity," he said. Four years In the future, but already in preparation, is "The Fox and the Hounds." Eight years away is "The Black Cauldron," also in preparation. By the time "The Fox and the Hounds" is finished, all the older animators will be gone. Mr.

Pomeroy said, The Fox and the Hounds' is really an elaborate trainee program getting ready for 'The Black which is a classical fantasy like 'Snow The characters are mostly human, which are the hardest to animate. "By the time it rolls around, the new animators will have cast themselves into roles needed for 'The Black But it's a race." Mr. Reitherman said animation is reaching for new dimensions, particularly in colleges, where a lack of money is forcing student animators to experiment and find new means of expression. Truffaut and Leone schedule films Los Angeles (AP) -United Artists has announced future films to be made by France's Francois Truffaut and Italy's Serge Leone. Mr.

Truffaut will direct, write, produce and star in "The Vanished Fiancee," based on a Henry James novel. Mr. Leone will produce and Luigi Comechini will direct "II Gatto" (The Cat), a contemporary comedy adventure. studio get out of the animation business-after all, its live-action films and Disneyland and Disney World were the major sources of income or should it rebuild its animation department from scratch? The decision was to stay in animation, and in 1971 the studio rounded up 60 young artists for testing and training. "This almost started too late," said one animator, John Pomeroy, 26.

"It just got going by the skin of its teeth. It's going to take a lot of work." Mr. Pomeroy began pounding on the studio doors at 14, when the only person who would look at his portfolio was the gate guard. He finally got in in 1973. The studio is so receptive to new talent that it has printed a colorful brochure pleading with young artists to submit samples.

The 60 new artists were given four weeks of training, then were required to produce a short piece of rough animation. The best went on to do a second screen test, and the outstanding ones were hired. Eventually, several were promoted to the rank of animator. "To animate means to bring alive," said Mr. Bluth, who at 39 is the oldest of the new group.

"Not just move characters. But to people your film with characters who have personalities and are believable. That takes ability and insight" Mr. Bluth said a number of the new group are women, who he says are bringing a much-needed touch of femininity to the Disney product. Mr.

Thomas said an animator must not only be an artist but an actor as well, since he has to make his characters "act" on his drawing board. "We tell stories through personality, attitudes and gestures," he said. The new animators were immediately pressed into duty. Mr. Reitherman said, "They have been pushed faster than in any period since after 'Snow We were pushed pretty hard then." "The Rescuers," considered Disney's best animated film in a decade, is out now.

Susan Ford, the daughter of former President Gerald R. Ford, focuses on Roy Scheider, the star of the new film "Jaws 2," the sequel to the box-office hit of 1975. Meditation is a vital part of it all, she says, "and it has done a great deal for me and I think it can help other people, too." One could see that she was longing to get away from the city, the crush of people and get back to the hills of Arizona, leaving behind the successful defense of her title. Shyness doesn't much matter when one is off in the mountains camping or building a log cabin.

"There are times when we all have to have the opportunity to be alone and think things through." In spite of her prowess at karate, Miss Bermudez still seems to have a basic shyness along with a broad, warm and winning smile. For a woman who easily defeated a male opponent two years ago, she appears to be vulnerable personally. Few who know her record, however, would test that vulnerability physically. "I've been looking for some land in the mountains of Arizona," she said. "I want to have a log cabin and I'll build it myself.

Born in New York, Miss Bermudez went to the University of Southern Arizona and answered an ad for a karate instructor to make extra money. "I've got a degree in electronics," she said, "but karate became so much a part of my life that I decided I'd try to help others get out of it what I did." In her early 20's, Miss Bermudez stands 5-foot-7 and weighs a misleading 125 pounds.

She's training both a light-heavyweight and a heavyweight boxer in the American Athletic Union. "The heavyweight came from a broken family and dropped out of school. I worked with him and he got a high school diploma and is now going to college and doing very, very well. Miss Bermudez runs a very successful karate school, but tries to get off into the hills of Arizona as often as she can. "I like to go camping.

Sometimes I go off all by myself and at other times I like to have people along when I go," she said. By KURT LASSEN It isn't likely that anyone would look to karate to solve a college study problem unless one had ideas to eliminate the professor. Marion Bermudez did, however, solve a college course problem with karate and without laying a hand on her teacher. "I was taking a course which required an oral presentation at the end. I'd do well in the course and when it came time for me to make the speech I just couldn't do it," Miss Bermudez said.

"I took the course three times and never could get up in front of the class to make my presentation. Then I took karate and overcame my shyness and finally, finally passed the course." Miss Bermudez says that karate isn't just kicking and punching, "It's learning how to be free, to coordinate mind and body, to think clearly, confidently, not to be a sheep. It's a whole lifestyle." For her, it has become a lifestyle. When we talked, she had just won her third consecutive Women's World Championship at the Oriental World of Self-De-fense at Madison Square Garden in New York.
