From 1957 to 1964, Jon Provost was Timmy, Lassie's master on the original CBS series. Now he's starring with Lassie all over again; this time in a new half-hour syndicated series due out this fall. (It will be shown on WNUV-Channel 54 in Baltimore.) "My character is the uncle who lives out of town," says the 39-year-old Provost, a long-time California resident. "It's a recurring role, which is great because it means I still get to live in Santa Rosa." Although at this point his character is named Uncle Tim, it's not an update of the old show. "Right now it's not written as Timmy grown up," Provost says.

"I don't even know if they'll stay with that name." Production begins in a few weeks, and Provost is committed to at least five, and up to 14, episodes. In the new show, two children take the place of Timmy a 9-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister. Both young actors are unknowns, and Provost says, "If they have as much fun as I did doing the old show, they'll do great." Dee Wallace Stone the mom in "E.T." stars as the mother in the new "Lassie, and Stone's real-life husband, Christopher, plays the father. Of course, the real star is the sable collie, Lassie. "The dog is absolutely fantastic," Provost says.

Robert Weatherwax, son of the original Lassie trainer, Rudd Weath- erwax, has trained the new dog. "The dog is a fifth-generation Lassie I worked with its great-great-grandfather." Provost's character is a freelance writer. An adventurer at heart, Uncle Tim will encourage his niece and nephew to have fun and try things, Provost says, often to the dismay of mom and dad. Set in a mid-sized rural town, the new show will try to capture the feel of the old programs, Provost says. "The old shows, they had a quality that's missing from a lot of shows today," Provost says.

"They were family-oriented, concerned about right and wrong. Hopefully, we can bring that back." A Sonoma County resident since 1970, Provost is a real estate agent. He and his wife of 10 years, Sandy, have two children, Ryan, 5, and Katherine, 3. The new "Lassie" has been in the works for several years, Provost says, and it seems the perfect way for him to ease back into acting something he's been wanting to do. Although Provost left the original "Lassie" 25 years ago, fans still re-congize him, and fan letters still fill his mail box, mostly from kids whose parents grew up watching the first show.

He has the Nickelodeon cable channel to thank for that. "Lassie," he says, has been its most popular show the past three years. Provost, you might say, is a living piece of pop Americana. Pushing 40, he says he has come to terms with who he was and who he is now. "Sure, there was a time I didn't want people to know my past," Provost says.
