It now becomes public that overzealous Delaware rooters, whether connected with the college or otherwise, hoodwinked a Wilmington daily paper into using false quotes that helped get the Hens worked up to a fever pitch for Connecticut.

Chief Boston, New Hampshire coach, was quoted as saying Delaware players weren't tough enough to handle the Uconn personnel. Needless to say, when the published quotes were tacked onto the Delaware bulletin board, the players became tough enough to handle Notre Dame. Seriously doubting that Boston would say any such thing, this paper did not use his name in relating the numerous phases of psychological warfare unloaded on the unsuspecting Huskies. The main theme, of course, was an overplay of "the great Connecticut i i i ii mt. I i icam, r.g.

One Coast Guard player near him was obviously taken by surprise as Reopel Since I did not use the New Hampshire coach's name, I have no need to take anything back, but I do think Chief Boston, former Harvard back who coaches New Hampshire, is entitled to the following protest he wired to several papers: "It has come to my attention that my name has been used inihe press' in connection with an absolutely false statement criticizing the University of Delaware football team.

I did not make the obviously ridiculous statement that 'Delaware lacked spirit and or in any way criticize their hard-hitting, aggressive and well-drilled team. I have received a letter of apology from Delaware which admits this false statement was the work of an overzealous publicist. Inasmuch as your paper carried the story, I would appreciate your setting the record straight. Many thanks for past favors. Chief Boston" Uconns Clobber New Hampshire Eleven Crushes Coast Guard, 5.

Trinity Well, the whole thing was bush, and I doubt that Davey Nelson had anything to do with the scheme. Nelson had a good enough football team to beat Connecticut without resort to deep-seated psychology. Perhaps it will serve as a lesson to other college publicists who might be tempted to behave like Hollywood type RED SOX NEED TO TRADE Red Sox rooters are certain to hope the rumor is substantiated that the Red Sox are anxious to deal lor Billy Martin. The Red Sox need an infield.

They must know at this date that a kail club cannot possibly win without an inner defense. Martin would give Mike Higgins a chance to shift Pete Runnels to first ba.se. Runnels, a fine hitter and a good glove man on most plays, is not a gifted double play operative. Martin didn't light a fire under the Detroit Tigers as so many expected. Cleveland wants Martin, too. They hae infield gaps as large as those in Boston. The question is what have these two teams got to give. In the final series, with Yale on the Indians' ten and two plays left, sophomore quarterback Singleton changed plays twice at the line of scrimmage and a rattled Yale attack bogged down without a gain and compelled the fourth down end zone pass that the Big Green knocked down. As it was, Dartmouth had a three-touchdown lead in the first half and Yale a two-touchdown margin after the intermission. The unstoppable mixture of passing skill and hard-driving rgnner power that Dartmouth showed in the first half ran up a first down lead of 10 to 1, a ground gaining lead of 114 to 41 and a whopping clerc kicking the point.
